Reposting this seems appropriate today. Innovation is key for growth. But it's hard to get creative destruction going when it's super costly to hire and fire people.
The Economist published this article that's contentious but probably right: It argues that laws protecting labour in much of Europe make lay-offs so onerous that high-risk moonshot projects become unviable. Making it easier to fire people could, weirdly, benefit everyone.

It was an amazing opportunity to present the results of our research to a group of teachers, school principals, school counsellors, and policy makers. In Cape Verde, 8 out of 10 students finishing high school express a desire to continue their studies abroad.
