Every year in lieu of a holiday bonus studios lay off writers room support staffs during Xmas & new years when shows are idle. It's a common industry practice. So TV writer/producers (gladly) pay the staff out of their own pockets to cover this deficit. Please spare me this bs.

In 2017 when I was staffing Kipo, a TAG animated show for Netflix/DreamWorks, I had to fight tooth and nail to get a writing staff. Then I had to fight to get a writers room, and offices for where the writers could, you know, write. One was basically a closet for three people.
In 2021, I got a meeting request from a TAG animated show for Netflix, with a hot star attached. Netflix wanted "new voices" for a "new process."
The process? Break the entire season over a WEEKEND. Then give each writer a freelance.
My pay for the whole season would be $9k.

The NYT did a puff piece on the lead negotiator for the studios & companies this morning. I didn’t learn much, though they did confirm she has a bizarre idea of what negotiating means. We’re fighting for the existence of our careers. She wants us to “soften our stance” on that?

Her actions could have harmed the strike effort by prolonging the strike, hurting everyone. Every show that crosses the picket line to air gives the studios & companies less incentive to return to the table and bargain. She did the right thing in the end. Thanks Drew Barrymore.

Star Wars Rebels (a NON-UNION show btw) was written that way. We’d break two eps IN A DAY then be sent home to script. Of course when they’re broken that fast we’d go home with stories with tons of problems that we had to work out on our own without pay or the room to help.

Maybe it's because I was brought up in animation where showrunners have to fight tooth and nail just to have a writers room at all, and I know that studios & companies want to make that the norm for live action too, but I sure as hell asked for this.
The WGA proposed that TV shows should hire a minimum of six to 12 writers, but some writers disagree.
“Nobody asked for this,” said one prominent showrunner. “Every showrunner I know is against this. It doesn’t make sense to anybody.”

I keep seeing in response to Warner Bros writing-off movies: “But talent got paid.”
Yes, but not residuals. There’s no back-end. Artists use these monies to survive between jobs.
And movies releasing make finding the next job easier. And improve quotes.

True!!! TAG / IATSE 839 has a no strike clause in their contract, as did the WGA. Their contract is current. Legally they can’t strike in solidarity. I know personally that TAG writers are doing everything possible to show solidarity. They have our backs.
