Would the federal funds rate be lower, today, if Trump didn't do his tariff policies?

We had a lot of fun talking about the policy and politics of abundance. Thanks to @RepJoshHarder @rohanspatel @FukuyamaFrancis for the meaningful conversation!
A great discussion moderated by our very own @bailleebrown!

It’s become impossible to build new energy, housing, and infrastructure in our country. Today I spoke at the @CNLiberalism Summit about how the Build America Caucus is laser-focused on getting us back to building and lowering prices for our families.

Mr. Dillon's publication viciously attacked me and doxed my young kids. When I messaged him demanding their pictures' removal, he publicly slandered and mocked me more. All just because I happen to be transgender. So spare me his high-and-mighty lectures about civility.
This is an essential essay by @SethDillon about standing up to evil, even on your own side: https://t.co/wsDr1CTIy5

New piece of mine summarizing recent research which shows tariffs are raising retail prices
New from @alex_durante_: data through early October show that tariffs have raised retail prices on average by 4.9pp relative to the pre-tariff trend. If the Supreme Court rules that the IEEPA tariffs may remain in place, we should expect even more price hikes to come.

They didn’t realize because legally he can’t
Trump tells @MariaBartiromo Dems didn’t realize he can slash in shutdown: “giveaways, welfare programs, et cetera. And we're doing that, and we're cutting them permanently.” Trump can’t cut benefits - but admin has told Hill SNAP food aid $ will start to run out Nov 1

Addressing our challenging fiscal situation will be difficult unless policymakers do the hard work of budgeting. Ideas like this need to be in the mix as we try to both break out of a government shutdown and consider improvements to the budget and appropriations process.
We’re on Day 16 of this shutdown. I introduced the No Budget No Pay Act because Members of Congress should not get paid for failing to do our jobs while federal employees work without pay. We need to light a fire under ourselves to work out a deal for the American people.

I’m going to be at No Kings (again), and I think it’s hard to argue that I’m in the “farthest left, hardest core, most unhinged” part of the party. But, like all Democrats, moderates believe that Trump is a lawless authoritarian who is assaulting just about every American
Bessent: "This crazy No Kings rally this weekend, which is gonna be the farthest left, the hardest core, the most unhinged in the Democratic Party, which is a big title. No Kings equals no paychecks."

The mechanism through which Trump is paying the troops is the most blatant large Antideficiency Act (ADA) violation in US history. It's also clearly willful. No one has been charged under the ADA before, but violations carry a 2 year jail term. Statute of limitations is 5 years.

Under the Constitution and under the ADA, it is illegal to spend money without funding for that purpose. The president may not spend money to do something unless there's actually money to carry it out and that action is expressly allowed.

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything It's also needless bcuz Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in 🧵

As far as we can tell, the Trump Admin’s maneuver paying military personnel was a one-time move to get them paid this week. It won’t cover their next paycheck (around Halloween) or the mid-November one preceding Thanksgiving. 🧵
Leaders in both parties are now looking to Thanksgiving - and possible mass flight delays - as a looming shutdown pressure point follows Trump intervening on troop pay - removing it as pressure point for Dems Nov 1 open enrollment is key too, Ds argue https://t.co/U3epyk6oJ7

The Trump Administration publicly taking the position that the House needs to pass a new CR with different language seems like it should be bigger news given that Johnson and Thune keep saying that CR is the only bill they’re willing to allow votes on

I'm in @Opinion today talking about three "partial truths" in the US economic narrative. "Partial truths" are not myths--they have more than a kernel of fact behind them--but they demand caution, asterisks, and grains of salt. https://t.co/Y5RYc6NrmX 1/9
