Later on in the video, Vance lies and says they have to do mass firings to preserve resources to use in other parts of the govt. This is not how it works. The people fired didn’t have any funding, so firing them doesn’t free up any money. They fired people because they want to.
BRENNAN: CBS confirmed that the Trump administration rescinded some of the layoffs of hundreds of CDC scientists who were mistakenly laid off on Friday. Some were involved with the federal measles response or the response on Ebola. How does a mistake like this happen? JD VANCE:

Not the point, but earlier in the video Vance lies about WIC being shut down. I know we just sort of shrug, but it’s honestly breathtaking how frequently the vice president of these United States lies.
STEPHANOPOULOS: I didn't insinuate anything. I asked you whether Tom Homan accepted $50k as was heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024. You did not answer the question. Thank you for your time. VANCE: No, George, I sai-- STEPHANOPOULOS: We'll be right back

Nearly the entire office in charge of administering funds to help children with disabilities succeed in school received notices that they would be fired.

I think it would be a huge public service if major media outlets interviewed people given RIF notices and let them explain in detail what their jobs are so that people can judge for themselves whether these positions are actually wasteful or whether they help the country prosper.

Asked for an example of a group that had funded a violent protest, Trump named ActBlue and Indivisible, which I think pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the goals here.
The Trump administration is preparing a crackdown on liberal political groups — including the funding arm of the Democratic Party — that will utilize the FBI, DHS, IRS and Treasury and Justice departments

Simply could not be more clear that the firings have nothing to do with the shutdown. It’s just people Trump and Vought have been planning to fire for a very long time.
Seeing that some impacted workers who were not furloughed are receiving RIF notices - employees that are designated as essential during a shutdown, but are now being laid off.

Thune is simply lying here. Shutdowns don’t force people to be fired. No one was ever fired in any of the previous shutdowns in history. Trump and Vought fired a bunch of people because they wanted to — like they’re been planning since February.
@LeaderJohnThune responds to OMB head @russvought’s message that “RIFS have begun,” telling @jordainc and I: “Well… I think they held off as long as they could.”

No one is forcing Russ Vought and Donald Trump to fire federal employees. In fact, the work necessary to carry it out is illegal. They’re doing it because they want to, and they’ve been planning mass firings since February. This hurts America, robbing us of technical expertise.

Three key points: 1) The admin has been planning mass firings to begin in October since February 2) The work necessary to carry out mass firings is illegal during a shutdown, violating the Antideficiency Act 3) This harms America, ridding us of talent and expertise

The Republican position is that Democrats *must* provide votes to reopen the government but that Republicans can unilaterally change funding levels. cutting what they hate with rescissions and plussing up what they love with reconciliation.
Republicans keep insisting that they’re pushing a “clean CR” while promising to unilaterally cut spending below agreed-to levels however they want with zero Democratic input.

Pretty easy to show more fiscal responsibility than their first reconciliation bill, which added trillions to the deficit and even increased deficits on a consistent current policy basis lol
Johnson adds: "Now, we would like to do another reconciliation bill this fall, before the end of the calendar year, and potentially a third one in the spring, where we will also show more and more fiscal responsibility."

👀 On this press call with the House Freedom Caucus, Johnson tells reporters: "We worked on rescissions, and there'll be more of that, we expect, in the days ahead."

Could not be more clear that the president wishes he had unilateral power to imprison people, like in an absolute monarchy. He doesn’t so instead he’s forcing the government to bring charges against his enemies because he wants vengeance.

Senate Rs did two small nukes earlier this year — plus functionally nuked the legislative filibuster. One was on enviro regs, one was on nominees, and one was to pass legislation w/ 51 votes that’d normally take 60 The current Senate GOP goes nuclear whenever they really want to

Elon Musk said he was going to cut spending by $2 trillion dollars, but instead spending is higher than we thought it would be this year before Trump took office. Truly incredible stuff.
CBO fy2025 projections for deficit/spending/etc. are out Some issues make simple comparisons apples-to-oranges, so I'll do apples-to-apples and explain in the thread. Relative to pre-Trump projections: -Primary deficits ⬆️ $34 bn -program spending ⬆️ $97 bn -revenues ⬆️ $63 bn

Here's the full comparison for people who want. The 2025 interest line might be off by a little because CBO didn't provide enough information to that right. And either the interest or program spending might be slightly wrong for 2024 because CBO didn't provide enough info.

When you do those adjustments, you get this, which compares what we thought 2025 was going to be before Trump took office to what actually happened (adjusting for the student loans)
