This is a blog from Driveline that clearly defines the Perception/Action Continuum & how & why the best athletes think less.

Hitting guys have done a ton of the applied work here. Most notably of course Jason Ochart, now Dir. Hitting @RedSox. But many others. @maxgordon40 @AndrewAydt, @Tstokey, @kww_BOS, @johnsoteropulos, @TravisFitta, @Justin_Sartori. @Elijah_Boyer7, @jhirsh04, and more!
@soundslikeR_E_L @drivelinekyle @jacklambert__ @connerpelletier and others on the Driveline squad have done a ton of great research to quantify how bat speed increases impact offensive production and power output (and how decreases can diminish them).

The best athletes in the world think less, allowing their actions to be driven directly by the affordances of their environment. High Performance Coordinator @Crider_HP talks you through these foundational motor learning principles in our most recent video.

If you think the velocity is high in MLB now, just read this tweet and pay specific attention to the phrase "redshirt freshmen" before the 100 MPH note.
.@AuburnBaseball opened fall practice last weekend, and things are already heating up on the Plains 🔥🔥 Redshirt freshmen Saxon Roberts (@SaxonRoberts) and Connor Gatwood (@ConnorGatwood) each hit 100 mph in their first team intrasquads.

A good assessment process is going to explain who you are as a hitter and why. To be clear - Ball flight is the output you’re trying to optimize for in games. That includes how hard you’re hitting the ball, the trajectory, direction and spin. When evaluating yourself you
What does our Hitting Assessment tell hitters? Batted Ball Profile ↕️ Bat Path ↕️ Biomech Every adjustment should target Bat Speed or Bat Path or both with the goal of improving batted ball outcomes. (📷: @kozy_shack)

Sprint speeds nice. Trotting around the bases? Even better 😎 Jordan Walker getting after it early this offseason alongside @AndrewAydt

One of the best pitchers in MLB in 2025 is already in the AZ Driveline Launchpad getting his High Performance assessment underway. Janson Junk, lowest walk rate in MLB this year, is in WA doing much the same. Offseasons are shorter than you think. Make the most of it.

We analyzed 50 MLB hitters who improved their zone contact from 2024→2025. The shocking finding? Making more contact barely moved the needle on production—UNLESS they also increased bat speed. Here's the 7x difference that changes everything 🧵

#Statcast Over last 5 years, the most popular primary pitch is 4-seam fastball, with 2512 pitchers having thrown it No surprise either the 2nd most popular primary pitch is Sinker (886 pitchers) The most popular SECONDARY pitch is the Slider Most popular combos: FF/SL FF/CH

🗻 THE FINAL WORD ON THE 2025 ROCKIES 🗻 - Pitching fWAR: +1.1 🥲 - Position Player fWAR: -3.6 ⤵️ - Total fWAR: -2.5 🫨 First negative team fWAR season since 1979 (A's). 📊Run Differential: -424, worst since ~1900 One of the #MLB seasons of all time. https://t.co/8JHGkxCFxQ
Last time I checked the Rockies as a team had a negative fWAR. That means the team is theoretically worse than a full team of freely-available minimum salary AAA players. I doubt this has happened too many times in MLB history. We’ll have to see if it holds up…

Elly's calculated xStats were about right for a neutral park as well; he hit 3 fewer HR which is what we would expect from 2024's data with a bat speed modifier.

For Elly de la Cruz, taking his 2024 data and applying a -1 MPH bat speed mod, we predict: - 4 fewer barrels - 17 points of xDamage lost In 2025 with lower bat speed: 5 fewer barrels, lost 25 points of xDamage. (Elly also had a lower launch angle, exacerbating the problems)
@drivelinekyle Elly, Steer, Benson, McLain (from ‘23), Stephenson, Hays, Friedl all down a small to decent amount. Marte & Lux down *significantly*

@DrivelineBB Position player aging and performance loss is largely due to bat speed loss, as @tangotiger's chart here neatly shows. @CoachMcCarry alluded to this the other day: Watch aging hitters suffer against elite FB velocity in the playoffs right now.
