Largest prospective study of #LongCovid in children and teens with 3-year follow-up https://t.co/338AFEnoLp by @LaCampo4 and colleagues —significant, long-lasting impact —increased risk of autoimmune diseases —reduction of risk with vaccination/boosters, especially among teens

Hi there! Just a reminder that we absolutely crushed seasonal flu and and drove one lineage extinct when we made an effort to mitigate viral transmission. SARS-CoV-2 isn't so easy, but imagine if we cleaned the air rather than only relying on individual behaviour.

Having grown up in NZ and lived in the UK for a year I'm proud (and lucky) to be able to choose Australia as my home. IMO a fair chunk of our advantage is down policy differences, but wealth is probably also significant. 🧵
Why do Australians live longer than people in the Anglophone countries of Canada, UK, Ireland, NZ, and the US https://t.co/ESFqLl8aIu

(1/x) We often talk about source control in sepsis, but what does this actually look like for a patient with septic shock in the ICU? Some are obvious (e.g. perforated bowel = OR) but others often get overlooked. A 🧵on often missed source control strategies. #medtwitter

Out now! More NAP7 Cardiology patients receiving anaesthesia -often an unplanned event -logistically high risk (remote & unfamiliar environment?) -medically high (>1% of anaesthesia activity vs almost 10% of cardiac arrests) -poor outcomes (Contrasts very much with cardiac

I don’t think it’s well understood that the number of people suffering from #LongCovid is not just very large, but it’s expanding. It doesn’t have to continue.
How common is Long COVID? We estimate that the cumulative incidence of Long COVID till the end of 2023 is about 400 million cases – this is a staggeringly high burden. https://t.co/Cvlmbo14lK

Peter Dutton keeps standing up and taking repeated cracks at me and my community. He should focus on improving the lives of the 26 million other Australians out there instead. And if he wants to have a conversation comparing his work over the past two years to mine, let’s have

The idea that you could decrease infections by increasing infections has to go down as one of the worst ideas in the history of medicine. It ranks up there with bloodletting to get rid of evil humors. Infecting kids also had nothing to do with education, did it.

Excellent thread from a leading long covid researcher
I’ve been fortunate enough to have some time to stand back and reflect on the state of the field of post-acute infection syndromes(PAIS)/infection associated chronic conditions (IACC) such as #LongCOVID, #MECFS and chronic #Lyme and I wanted to share some opinions. Before I 1/

I think what the old guard have failed to grasp is that speaking collectively is no longer regarded as a strength. @SenatorPayman crossing the floor is true strength, and demonstrating that strength casts the Labor caucus as a solidarity of cowards, no matter how 'long-held'.
As a senator I held opposing views on many caucus decisions and policies but never crossed the floor. Despite this no one doubted my commitment to progressive policies. Caucus solidarity is a long held article of faith in the ALP and should be respected.

Life expectancy in Oz improved in 2020-21, bucking the global trend, but has significantly worsened since. The single reason for both is pandemic management. Explained in this @BurnetInstitute submission https://t.co/H58U8pts81
