Congratulations David Adeang on your re-election as President of Nauru. Australia and Nauru have a strong relationship, embodied by the Nauru-Australia Treaty. We look forward to working together to address shared challenges for our region’s future. Ata amin bwini.

Time to revisit Xi’s April 2020 speech: 1, "It is necessary to extend the long board, consolidate and enhance China’s int'l leadership in key industries, develop “killer” technologies, tighten global reliance on China’s industrial chain, and build strong capabilities for

This is insane. How can any Republican stand by and endorse this? I never ever thought I would see this in America in my lifetime.
ICE agents just snatched a Journalist & were Speeding away when they hit a woman’s vehicle that was going to work & doing nothing wrong! They almost left the scene after slamming into her,but then snatched her out of her car at gunpoint and took her with them! 🤬

China is not just demanding every exporter in the world who uses Chinese rare earths (or rare earth tech) apply to it for export licenses, they also want technical drawings of all products & descriptions how they move through global supply chains https://t.co/GBUe5d2UYJ

Broad restrictions could cause supply interruptions for arms makers, as well as manufacturers in the semiconductor, automotive and other sectors.

In tightening export controls on rare earths, Beijing insists it isn’t “weaponizing supply,” only “regulating for security.” Yet the move marks a decisive moment: China has shown its hand for what Pax Sinica looks like—an order where gatekeeping over strategic materials and

This is spot on, all the way to the end.
I agree with most of Dean’s points, except that China built its rare earth industry not because the West couldn’t, but because the West didn’t need to. That’s the logic of globalization: there’s always a poorer country willing to do the dirty work for a fraction of the price.

Good frame here from Dean. “China has crafted a policy that gives it the power to forbid any country on Earth from participating in the modern economy.” Those who equate China’s action with America’s chip controls are missing the sheer scale of what China has done.
We should not miss the fundamental point on rare earths: China has crafted a policy that gives it the power to forbid any country on Earth from participating in the modern economy. They can do this because they diligently built industrial capacity no one else had the fortitude

China is effectively forcing every country to choose between it & the US. It’s the choice every country has avoided for 25 years. This ultimatum won’t go down well.

LONG COVID WHICH DIDN'T EXIST 5 YEARS AGO IS ALREADY THE MOST COMMON CHILDHOOD DISEASE IN THE US Let that sink in 😢😠😢😠😢😠😢😠😢😠
PBS: What do you want people who haven’t been affected by LC to know about this community? @meighanstone: Americans may feel like the pandemic is over.. but even in just last few months we saw the announcement that #LongCovid is now the most common childhood illness in the US

Reminder that Whyalla wasn’t bailed out, it was nationalised. The government didn’t give them money, it confiscated their company. It then invested heavily in the firm & is re-privatising it. There’s no moral hazard there. #auspol

The federal government is considering an ownership stake in the teetering Whyalla steelmaker as part of a $2.4 billion taxpayer-funded bailout.

We’re the closest of neighbours. The dearest of friends. And now Australia and Papua New Guinea are Allies too. The Pukpuk Mutual Defence Treaty elevates our relationship to an Alliance. Our first in more than 70 years - and PNG’s first ever.

Such an important piece. The positive momentum behind clean indoor air is palpable. But we’re not there yet as my last post demonstrates. Please read and share and get behind this cause. https://t.co/jq1Dzc18zZ

Unchecked airborne infections cost billions in lost health and productivity each year – likely more than the cost of better ventilation to clean up indoor air.

This is not about woke shit, it’s about getting rid of generals who aren’t Trump-loyalists & creating a military cult of personality instead of a defence force loyal to the constitution https://t.co/cBjlTc2l8D

The US president is used to boisterous crowds who laugh at his jokes and applaud his boasts. He wasn’t getting that kind of soundtrack in Quantico.

Pretty forceful stuff from President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands Hilda Heine at the UN. On China's portrayal of UN Resolution 2758 re Taiwan: "never has there been such gaslighting in this institution." (RMI maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan rather than China)

Excellent critique of @SamRoggeveen by @JAParker29, outlining how Australia's defence strategy is cannot just be continental defence but must encompass supply chains and trade, meaning sea power far from Australia's shores. https://t.co/BTl5yTtHEx

New Mogami frigates are essential to protecting vital supply chains and trade.

NEW: In the Sunday @nytopinion, Kurt Campbell and I argue America alone can’t match China’s scale. With "allied scale," it’s no contest. But if Trump keeps alienating US partners, we'll never get there—and the next century will be China's to lose.
