and here’s our entry. The nineteen year does t come back from uni often so I’ve taken over. Out of sight is my recording set up with desk boom mic and two monitors, sewing machine and weaving loom. Oh and linocut space.

My rights as a woman are not impacted by the existence of trans women. Please don’t think that the loud gender critical activists speak for most women. Do careful listening here. You can’t be sure who feels bullied out of the space - by definition you don’t hear from them.
Delighted to have been awarded a University of Leeds Teaching Award for Sustained Excellence. Massive thanks to all my colleague who have supported me. I’ve been sitting on this news for weeks - glad I can finally share! 🎊 🎉 🍾
Read about the 2023 University of Leeds Teaching Awards winners.
The prestigious accolades celebrate excellent practice in student education, plus the work and innovation of colleagues to deliver high-quality teaching and learning

Worth remembering that at the end of our assessment design are people. Often young, frequently anxious. Bringing compassion into assessment practices is essential.
Delighted that our latest paper is out-
In this paper we found that while students value more innovative assessments, they need to be carefully scaffolded and supported.
Hearing at
#ISSOTL23
about Utrecht removing separation between academic and professional services roles. Such a good idea to build the proper collegiate university
Some news! In April I will start a new role as LEAF Academic Lead. I will be working with
@AliceOGrady4
and
@SamLP
on implementing the
@UniversityLeeds
assessment strategy and refreshing and embedding Leeds Expectations for Assessment and Feedback (hence LEAF!). Very excited!
Lovely to get my University Teaching Award this afternoon. Enjoying celebrating all the excellence going in around
@UniversityLeeds
and hear about the practices of other great colleagues
In my most favourite bar in Utrecht, digesting a day of pedagogy. I think this may be my favourite conference, I got to spin yarn, play ticket to ride, see trains and have really good discussions. Bringing some fun to conferences is awesome.

NEW: Weekend
@TheNewsAgents
. Students are at the centre of the cost of living crisis/housing crises. The value of their loans has gone ⬇️. Their stock of debt through interest climbs ⬆️. But they’re rarely talked about. This ep puts them front and centre.
Delighted that our paper on belonging in green campus spaces has been accepted in the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education! Will share when we have the online publication :)
A recipe for inequality. Students come to campus when they can and when they see the point. Commuting (trains in the north lol), work, caring and other responsibilities make it more difficult for some students. Desirable outcome is learning, not literal bums on seats.
Want students back on campus? Don’t give everything away online. Empty classrooms are an unfortunate reality of post-pandemic universities. To stop this, we need to explain the basics of learning and tempt students back,

Loving the free buses in West Yorkshire today. Wish it was like this everyday - being able to hop on and off without worrying is brilliant. Thank you
@TracyBrabin
I have had the most amazing day, thinking about assessment at
@UniversityLeeds
. Such diverse research and scholarship of assessment, and I’m so proud of what we’re achieving. Massive thanks to all who presented, to
@leedsteaching
for support, and
@rahaworth
for everything!
Really pleased with our exhibition looking at belonging from the point of view of minoritised PhD students. Lots we can do to support this population and really change academia for the better
#raise23
Are you a leading change in assessment practices in a research-intensive university? We are establishing a peer support network to connect with others working towards improving institutional assessment practices. . Please contact me (p.birtill

I'm so proud of this. Huge thanks to my kids - who helped me to work out alot of what we know, that they don't. As a first in family to university, from a northern comprehensive school, figuring out the hidden rules of academia has been a trip.

As part of the

And now its annual leave time. Deleting twitter and teams until 12th April. Time to get on my bike, into the garden, and away from my screen for a bit. See you in a week or so...
Delving into reading about communities of practice, and immediately find this quote: "To assess learning we use tests with which students struggle in one-on-one combat, where knowledge must be demonstrated out of context, and where collaborating is considered cheating". Yup.
Big day tomorrow! In the morning I'm leading
@leedsteaching
session on chatGPT, and then in the afternoon we have our next Intercultural Cities belonging in green spaces event
@UOLbelonging
!
@JoeBrummer
He blocked me… I suggested it might be interesting to do some research on how people transition to HE from the sort of school teaching he advocates
So happy that this has been decided. Resit fees have been removed for taught students - will improve fairness and remove one of the barriers to success.
Had such a good time at the
@leedsteaching
celebration of SoTL yesterday. So much excellent work being done, and great energy in the room with lovely colleagues. Thank you
@DaveRiley2810
and
@HelenRMorley
for organising!
The time has come to declutter my office. Emptying filing cabinets, and its emotional! Conference programmes from 1998, PhD data, my first teaching slides (OHP naturally). Glossy prints of my first article. Proposals for a new UG curriculum (2006), PGCAP materials (2001). Blimey.
I think this may be the most tired I’ve been at the end of the year. And it’s the closest I’ve worked to Xmas for several years. Looking forward to some rest and lie ins.
Excited this morning to have our first meeting of the
@UniversityLeeds
Assessment Research Network. Looking forward to learning more about all the great research we are doing. Massive thanks to
@leedsteaching
for supporting this work!
Had fun talking to colleagues
@LeedsPsyc
about all things
#assessment
this afternoon. Planning quick wins and provoking discussion about how we might do things differently in the future
#CurriculumRedefined
Hatching, painted cycle lanes, lumpy cluttered pavements...or smooth uncluttered space with wide continuous lanes for everyone to use in safety?
Support with:
We need to be compassionate to students because we don’t know what they’re experiencing - domestic violence, mental health crises, caring, disability, all can impact their experiences of assessment
#LTHEchat
What a great day. Turned off email and teams for most of it, and just worked on a paper. I can’t remember the last time I did that, and I actually enjoyed it too.
Today I was struck by how we are designing assessments for the next 12-24 months; but what will assessment look like in 5-10 years time, and how do we start preparing for that now? The ‘AI isn’t very good’ thing is unlikely to be true by 2030.
Looking forward to another Assessment Matters event with
@leedsteaching
tomorrow. We’re looking at group assessments - with contributions from
@Dunc76
@SamLP
Clare Tweedy and
@HarrietCannon
. I’m lucky to have such great colleagues supporting our assessment strategy work!
Thread. A few weeks ago, I was speaking to a journalist from ITV about sexual misconduct at university. I have always addressed this issue from the position of a policy editor.
Joy unbounded this morning. Arrived at work and discovered, after many many years of emails, moaning and complaining, that thermostatic valves were fitted to our radiators over the weekend. Small wins!
This comes back to the idea of 'who' is the university? *Some* academics don't take teaching seriously, but lots do. How can we show that the university takes teaching seriously?
Walking home from SEC
An owl flies to a beech tree;
spring is coming soon.
Today I enjoyed illustrating assessment briefs and rubrics using the medium of haiku.
#SEC2024
And this is why work on understanding the competence standards of our degrees is essential. Without knowing what we are assessing, how can we determine the validity of our assessments?
My best response so far to "where is the line on the use of AI in assessment?" is the same as it was a few years back: allow it when it doesn't get in the way of assessing the outcomes. It's all about validity
@mkhokhar
@grabill
@Cat_Davies
But applies to teaching too. Academics, library, careers, digital education, academic developers, operations etc. We’re all on the same side, but so often it feels like we aren’t. Mutual respect and trust vital.
Won an award! It's a rare thing for anyone in Disability Services to win anything, because, when we do things well, the point is that no one notices. But I'm super chuffed to have been nominated for (banging on about) my work on competence standards. Thanks to my nominators ❤️
Fantastic day in Amsterdam, wish I could have stayed and explore more. Thank you to
@FeedbackFruits
for inviting me, and to all the speakers yesterday at
#InspirEDEurope2023
This makes me so angry. I was a first generation student, I went to Cambridge in 1994. My parents had 1 A level between them, my mum was a teenager when I was born, I had no private tutoring. But I was loved and supported and it never crossed my mind that I wasn’t good enough.
Two articles today claiming that letting more state students into Oxbridge will damage their standing in the international rankings. I know a bit about international rankings and can confidently say that’s absolute nonsense.
Another inspiring
#AssessmentConf23
. So good to meet up with everyone again. Massive thanks to all the organisers, I’ll be back next year. Next stop Aberdâr for the
@Eisteddfod_eng
proclamation!
Delighted that my abstract with
@ChloeThom_
to present our work on sense of belonging and green campus spaces has been accepted for
@RAISEnetwork
conference
A lovely afternoon of walking and cycling around
@YorkOpenStudios
some amazing work, well done all! One of these days I might organise myself to try and join in. Feeling inspired - here’s my most recent linoprint
Come and work with me this summer! I have two SREPs - one with
@maddi_pow
and
@HarrisR_Psy
looking at hidden curriculum, and another looking at student experiences of peer assessment and feedback, through a disability lens. Please apply!
