One of my neighbours is afghan. He fled a few weeks ago, leaving his entire family. He asked in broken English last week why I looked skinny (ESL - forgave him 😂). I said id recently had surgery & was ill. He just dropped this around. All homemade, including the yoghurt & bread.
(NB: I dont think right to stay should be granted on ability to cook, and should be a given. I just thought this was a beautiful gesture of community in sharing some of his culture as an act of care)
Shout out to the woman checking her emails (phone was unavoidably in my eyesight) on the Northern Line who, upon receiving a what read as a very senior job offer with an eye watering salary laughed, smiled, mumbled "Yeah, thought they would."
For many, uni gives you a stable home environment, good internet/study space, 1:1 support, accessible mental health/wellbeing services, space to be yourself (or find out who that is) & to find your people, for the first time. But, sure, it's unexplained why you'd do better there.
Women who aren't sex workers should not be thrown out of hotels in the middle of the night.
Women who are sex workers should also not be thrown out of hotels in the middle of the night.

I was told there was a room but after I had no photo ID this happened. Always be prepared to tell men (even strangers) where you have been & why you are out at 1am.
I've noticed a pattern of evocating one's motherhood as denotation of innocence/credibility. This is reductive, anti-feminist, deeply troubling, and reminiscent of other certain groups we'd - presumably - not want be associated with.
Hate these arguments because I know so many incredibly brave & resourceful women who've gone on from student sex work to become successful academics or professionals that I can't name precisely because of the stigma this approach reinforces. Pay attention to who isn't talking.
If you want to stop people being signed off for mental health issues caused by "every day challenges and worries of life' then you need stronger community infrastructure, more secure housing, better public healthcare, better working pay & conditions. Not banning being signed off.
GP’s will soon be stripped of the ability to sign people off work as part of a major government inititive to crack down on ‘sick note culture’
Rishi Sunak says people should stop 'over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life'
It's not just about graduation. Ru was a sabbatical officer who had to fight to have the election results party changed to an accesible venue & then couldn't even access her own SU office for her entire electoral term because it was upstairs & there was no way for her to get up.
just found out i am unable to access my own graduation this summer because the access needs of myself and many other Disabled students are ‘not viable’ due to ‘time constraints and cost’.
devastated doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I don't really know how to mark this but apparently it's the 10-year anniversary of when I very narrowly survived an almost fatal suicide attempt I'd planned for weeks. Just wanted to say what a beautiful (tough, yes, but beautiful) decade it's been & how happy I am to be here 💖
@adhdjesse
My very neurodivergent brother, age 5, was given a template of a TV and told to draw something beginning with "T" in it. He scribbled out the whole screen. When he got in trouble for blacking out the page & asked why he didn't do the assignment he said "I did. It's 'Turned off'"
Lots of noise about Pret baristas getting paid £14/hr.
27k after tax is around £1700 a month.
There are around 273 Prets in London, the cost of a rental room in which is £2036.
If you want your central London coffee then understand that those who make it need to live there.
@livia_scott_
one thing that was super difficult for me was that going to university wasn't something people my background did and I felt misunderstood for aiming to go. I thought i'd fine "my people" at university. I did not. You end up not fitting in anywhere.
If you work in a university and you consider EDI part of your role - doesnt have to be formal remit - can you like this post (just trying to see something!)
Sex workers can't be collateral damage or harm prevention measures in pursuit of keeping other women safe. Sex workers face higher levels of violence already. Don't send alleged violent men to sex workers.
One point that might be worth making- Brand is a rich man. If he just wants to have a lot of sex with different women he can hire sex workers and do that.
The thing that screams out at me is the coercion is part of what he gets off on.
This gentleman learnt 3 valuable lessons today;
1. Don’t smoke heroin
2. Don’t smoke heroin on the metrolink
3. Don’t smoke heroin on the metrolink in front of plain clothes police officers

Ive muted this thread because the very unexpected attention became a bit overwhelming. However, if this made you smile please do consider donating to one of the charities on this list
The WI shouldn't be used as a low bar for comprehending rights & inclusion. WI have always been progressive! They were spearheading sex worker safety initiatives & lobbying against legislation that would criminalise sex workers 20 years ago! This is no surprise to me!
Thread. A few weeks ago, I was speaking to a journalist from ITV about sexual misconduct at university. I have always addressed this issue from the position of a policy editor.
HOW does Matt Hancock, as health minister, have time for an affair?! I'm president of my student union and cant even manage to reply to people on Bumble within 3 working days.
Fun fact: leaving a class/meeting room to go to the toilet for five minutes when you don't need to go to the toilet - during a long class/meeting - is a way neurodivergent people deal with sensory overwhelm or information overload and it's just as valid as peeing.
Most ppl seem to believe that when students ask to go to the toilet in a lesson they actually want to go to the toilet and not just have an extra break - come on ppl! Obv there are exceptions to this rule but in my 15 years experience, 50%+ just want to get out of lesson time.
Half a million 25 - 29 year olds booked their vaccine shot in the first 24 hours of eligibility. HALF A MILLION. I hope everyone who was naysaying about uptake amongst young people reasseses their biases.
Care leavers & estranged young people who succeed aren't special anomalies. This entire group is full of talented & aspirational individuals. Those who stand out have just been lucky & been granted mitigations to counter a system that's holding the rest of us back. Just saying.
It's that time of year again when all the rich students dump the homeware they bought only for the academic year outside their student rentals as they move out, and I get to go for a stroll and kit my flat out with practically new John Lewis
Alarming that Durham University is continuing with its sex work sessions. Normalising sex work in this way is harmful.The Home Affairs Select Committee, of which I am a member, will be looking at this.
@davidgmandel
@karenwhybro
I totally agree with your point but you didn't need the hypothetical virtuous activities to make it. Women don't have to "good people" and perform care work/labour to be left in peace.
Crested mynas, as many other birds, are born altricially, which means young are underdeveloped at the time of birth, therefore fed by parents. When they grow up, they have to learn that food doesn't simply jump into their beaks [📽️: Rebecca Gelernter]
Anyway. Don't maybe don't use a student's socio-economic background, amongst other questionable demographics, to call their degree classification "unmerited." Ghoulish behaviour.
CN suicide.
My best mate at uni killed himself. He was on the picket line in solidarity with staff every single strike through our time at uni Outrageous inference that staff - who many of whom will have poor MH due to bad working conditions - are to blame for student suicide.
On LBC this morning I set out the case for our striking members
I was met with Nick Ferrari attempting to use the tragic death of a student against university staff
This is disgusting, morally reprehensible, and completely irresponsible
Shame on you
If you need anything to keep going, each day between now and the end of January gets longer by about 1 - 2 minutes. So we'll have an hour more daylight by the end of the month 🌻
Happy 1st
@Wonkhe
Birthday to me
🎈🥳🎂
Also congratulations to

for both the most direct and effective pep talk ever, and for being right, a year ago.
Sharing in solidarity for anyone who can sometimes feel too small.
You don't have to justify your abortion with the glittering career, or the wonderful big family, you went on to have. Your life doesn't even have to have got even remotely better after an abortion, you still had every right to exert autonomy over your body and decisions!
Aside from the fact that this is a masters graduation, and the fact that a traditionally Asian name doesn't indicate nationality...
Posting lists of names of 'undesirables' is a little too close to the bone for me.
I just don't think we should be shaming children for outgrowing their school uniform - or that uniform not fitting entirely properly - during a cost of living crisis.
It's a side note but the energy bill crisis won't just impact students' finances. Interpersonal housemate conflicts - which can have one of the biggest impacts on student mental health - over use of utilities and how to split bills is going to cause major conflict and upset.
First day of annual leave and I get headhunted for an organisation who want to literally create a role in order to get me to work for them! 👀👀👀

The further I am from being an officer & the more I settle into a healthier work-life balance, the more I realise how absolutely unsustainable &unhealthy officer roles are. I was addicted to sleeping pills, I collapsed at work multiple times, my eyeball vessels burst from stress?
3 yrs ago I adopted a cat so unmanageable he'd been returned 3 times! It took 6 months to come out from under the sofa, a year to be stroked, 2 to be picked up (albeit briefly) 2.5 to sit on my lap(albeit briefly). This morning he joined me in bed. We all just need love & time ❤️
It's been a month since I went into hospital for what turned out to be a very complicated operation. It is both the best thing ive ever done and the worst thing ive ever been through. But, today I'm finally starting to feel like myself again (albeit weak) Here's to small boobs 🍒
Nah, rancid to use children for respectability points when
@ProstitutesColl
research found that 1/3 sex workers are mothers!
And as if sex workers don't have pets, or literally run their own business.
Distancing yourself from the 'wrong' women won't save you from misogyny!
Students who aren't "officially disabled" (whatever that means) deserve reasonable adjustments, too.
Students who aren't "officially disabled" deserve to demonstrate their learning without jumping through medical - & often financial - hoops for a diagnosis.
Burden upon burden.
And enough of "I worked in domestic violence/womens outreach & ALL the sex workers I met there are vulnerable." OF COURSE they are by virtue of needing your provision. Your data & perception is skewed based on what your beneficiaries need. Trust SUs to know what theirs need.
I also find it funny that I occupied many of the demographics of a student who is algorithmically supposed to struggle in higher education and yet now higher education, as a sector, has to struggle with me.
"Sex work is work" situates it within the inherently patriarchal & capitalist system- with its violently uneven gendered distribution of labour - that we live in. "Sex work is work" is an articulation of workers' current position, not a rallying cry for a revolutionary end goal.
Do not underestimate the power of these letters for those grieving. Oli saved multiple lives when he passed. He also donated his corneas. And given that he was an artist, it has always brought me great comfort knowing that someone now sees the world through his eyes.
Someone referred to my "expertise" today & I thought "oh, I wouldn't say "expertise" I just know a lot about it as I read the academic literature on it, have published some papers & book chapters on it & have a job in policy around it & .." This is that gender thing, isn't it? 🫠
But this looks a lot more like: "everyone else is getting married and having relationships except for me."
This perception can make people angry, jealous, and bitter.
The academic version of the incel "Chad and Stacy" discourse.
I'm going to need everyone saying letting state school kids into Oxbridge drags standards down to take a step back and learn that clarinet lessons and skiing holidays (allegedly) refine your taste, not your intellect.
I dont know about you but explicitly telling vulnerable students theyre degrading themselves doesn't fill me with the confidence it'll lead to disclosures and then safeguarding/help.
Horrific that Durham University is offering training to students who want to be sex workers part-time. Sex work is degrading, dangerous and exploitative. Uni should have nothing to do with it
I told my GP jokingly that the best thing for my health would be moving to a small rural cottage and having some chickens and she turned to me, completely seriously, and said, "I would recommend ducks in your case" and showed me a rehoming site for rescued ducks. NHS water fowl.
Okay. Weird. I was shouted at twice on my lunchtime walk. Two young lads on a park bench said "miss, you look beautiful cos you look happy" and a man called out his car window "girl, you look like youve got your sh*t together!"
Is this.. this post-feminist girlboss catcalling?😂
Hey
@ACORNunion
not sure one of your organisers should be referring to vulnerable sex workers - who are often evicted and made homeless because of discriminatory housing laws (FYI 🙃) & therefore could do with community advocacy - as "plague". Btw, sex workers are also locals.
I don't understand where this sudden discourse around 'protecting the traditional family unit' has come from. We basically abolished the nuclear family household it when we priced the rental market so that single 35 year olds must houseshare with 5 other millennials indefinitely.
- Not everyone has a car, ability, or time to get to a big supermarket
- Local supermarkets (e.g Tesco Express) often only have brands
- Online deliveries require a higher minimum spend
Yes, Brendan, you're right it's expensive to be poor - your conclusion as to why is wrong.
I totally get the frustration at lockdown hesitancy BUT living on your own in a second floor flat, estranged from family & around 2 hour train journey from the people you'd want to support bubble with makes a very different lockdown experience. Please be mindful and kind to us!!
Just had a book chapter confirmed with Palgrave Macmillan on oppression and identity in the student movement 💅💅💅💅💅 She gonna be a published author, y'all!!!!! ✨
I've been thinking a lot about the emphasis on universities advising "the most disadvantaged" students how to manage money. Misdirected. Poor students are experts at being poor. I could make a fiver stretch a week as a student. It's the middle class kids you want to worry about.
The amount of time, energy, and money being putting into defending the right to shag students. Everyone sit down, reconsider the core mission of a university, and someone point out to where fulfilling staff's sexual desires comes into it.
I think being heavily tattooed should make me more employable in this sector because being able to sit for hours whilst having tiny little needles stabbed into my skin is demonstrable of my ability to sit through that Gavin Williamson speech.
On Christmas Day of all days, where we celebrate the birth of a son of refugees who was gracefully given shelter, this anti-migrant sentiment is misplaced and grotesque. Take a day off being a ghoul.
How dare young people* not spend their recreational time in a way the Daily Mail deems fit.
And the idea that getting a 20 year old to organise two external speakers to point score against each other for entertainment is the metric of free speech at an institution is laughable.
