Regular health screenings are a critical component of preventive care. In a multi-wave field experiment, Damon Jones, @davidmolitor, and @JulianReif find that financial incentives increase participation in screenings both immediately & in the long term. https://t.co/gECbVEqtIM

The last few years in particular, WCIA has brought you several stories about the devasting wildfires happening across the world. In Central Illinois, a University of Illinois professor is learning how the smoke from those events can impact public health.

Excited to announce a new funding opportunity for research on "what works" in climate adaptation. We are specifically looking for strong causal designs that tell us what interventions work (or don't) to reduce impacts of a changing climate. Link in next post. Plz share!

I also view this as one of the most informative aspects of the study, demonstrating the value of randomization when program participation depends on hard-to-observe factors like motivation and health. Great graphic and discussion by @UpshotNYT (link in next post).

But the most amazing detail, in my opinion, is that this study went further: It explained why prior observational work showed such large benefits for workplace wellness programs. The reason is selection: health-conscious employees selected into the program and stuck with it!

Behavioral change is very hard for people to sustain. Selection bias is very real. This outstanding study from 2018 by @nomadj1s @davidmolitor @JulianReif illustrates why randomization is so important when those two effects are prominent. Couple more thoughts & paper link follow.

Researchers put together an incredible workplace wellness program that provided thousands of workers with paid time off to receive biometric health screening, health risk assessments, smoking cessation help, stress management, exercise, etc. What did this do for their health?🧵
