Putin and an expert used an old French map from the 17th century to show that Ukraine didn’t (doesn’t) exist. It turned out that Ukraine was demarcated - while there was no mentioning of Russia as an independent state. St Petersburg belonged to Sweden!

@steven_pifer Since 1999 I have visited Ukraine 2-4 times per year. Different cities and regions. Initially there was a Russian/Ukrainian language divide that related (but not squarely) to pro-Russian/pro-Ukrainian positions. That is long gone. Putin has forged Ukraine and will split Russia.

@maria_avdv Seeing this reminds me of my grandmother in the Netherlands in WWII. A house wife at a farm she gave food to two German soldiers, 13 years old. They started crying and fell asleep on the couch. When they woke up the Canadian Army had arrived and they surrendered - and survived.
