“The government has got to learn from Sure Start’s successes and be bold enough to invest in early years services now in order to reap the undoubted benefits that will come down the line.” Full comment on @TheIFS report on impact of #SureStart: https://t.co/qqXhhaZZqQ

👀Who would be a premier-style head today with low job security and built in turnover? 👀 Not many it seems. Long serving headteachers are the bedrock of good schools and communities. We need to make it a less risky and more attractive role.

The pipeline to headship isn't strong. Just 42% of deputy and assistant heads say they’d like to become a headteacher one day.

How utterly depressing. How completely debased and retrograde our public discourse has become on this issue. Particularly this Rogan/Peterson/podcast-bro manosphere rubbish; essentially a dumb person's idea of what a clever person sounds like. No better example than the bovine

Major new survey from National Education Association gives very strong support for phone-free schools. Any policy that lets kids have phones BETWEEN classes disrupts what happens IN class. Give teachers a chance. Go phone-free. https://t.co/bjJGaHM6vl

As more schools and states consider going phone-free, I'm reposting this: clear evidence that phone-free schools improve learning. Just taking phones during CLASS gives less benefit in class, while still damaging social life between classes and at lunch.

@Mr_Raichura Without worrying whether Feynman said it or not, it is important, in trivium terms, to teach both knowledge and how to use it in such a way as to help the student to think for themselves freely. The suspicion is that, in too many places, the acquisition of knowledge is all…

“…it’s not just social media platforms that cause the problem; it is the screens themselves– & the content designed to get our kids hooked on mindless digital stimulation – that are stunting preschoolers’ brains.” @miriam_cates is right. We are in crisis https://t.co/9yepyj0iRm

Knowing the risks of screen time for toddlers, we cannot allow any more young children to fall victim before they even start school

Arkansas shows how easy it is to improve schools by going phone free. Gov. @SarahHuckabee put up money that schools could choose to use. Huge response from schools. I spoke with a few classes; the kids love it too, when nobody is on a phone. So much more fun!

As @JonHaidt said, no school regrets going phone-free. We are doing this in Arkansas and hope to see more states follow our lead!

We learn more from reading on paper than on screens. 54 studies, 171k people: we process print more deeply than digital content—as long as it's informational rather than purely narrative. The paper advantage holds across ages and has grown over time. Long live physical books.

Why? Eton got 53% 9s and Michaela got 52% Eton is HIGHLY selective. Tricky entrance tests, similar to tests to get into our local grammars. Our top kids FAIL those tests for local grammars and come to Michaela. Yet our kids get similar 9s to Eton… Think about it

@Miss_Snuffy I think Eton should just be left out of this type of comparison . Michaela does a wonderful job because she makes the children want to work. That’s the only difference . If parents want to send kids to Eton that their choice . It’s called Freedom ?? Questionable I know

@Iainrhall One of the challenges is the uneven economic development across the UK, reducing opportunities for some unless they are prepared to move away from their communities.
