In the past having children was an economic necessity. How else would one be cared and provided for in old age? But now that we have socialised the costs of sickness and pensions, we have broken the link between having children and personal economic security. The costs of raising.
✍️ 'Britain’s birth rate has plummeted. It is a sad truth that many couples later regret not having children' | Writes Miriam Cates.

Great to have the opportunity to discuss Britian’s declining birth rate with the excellent @joshsimonsmp - and why politicians of all colours should be deeply concerned about the economic and social consequences of falling fertility.

“The number of children per mother has remained stable since the 1970s. What has changed dramatically is the number of women who never become mothers at all. The rate of childlessness was less than 5% in 1970; by 2020 it had reached 30%” @StephenJShaw

Latest ONS figures show Total Fertility Rates have fallen again, to a record low of 1.41 children per woman. But as @StephenJShaw shows here, the fall is not driven by shrinking family size, but by a huge rise in number of women who never become mothers.

It’s tempting to think of birth rate decline as a one off population ‘cull’ like after a war or pandemic. Unfortunately it is not like this at all. A TFR of 1.41 means each generation is one third smaller than the one before. So it looks like we have entered a tailspin of decline.
@miriam_cates Miriam, just saw you talking about the birth rate in the UK and the ratio of young to old. Whilst the birth rate is a problem, surely, at some time in the future, as the current generation of pensioners are replaced by generations with fewer pensioners the ratio will improve?.

When UN’s CEDAW committee found that a lack of abortion provision in Northern Ireland breached women’s rights, UK government legislated to introduce abortion in NI. I trust we will now legislate to ban surrogacy in the UK following this latest intervention
dailymail.co.uk
According to the report , in 2023 the global surrogacy market was valued at over £11billion and is projected to reach £73.75billion by 2033.
