It’s good to have fun at work… practical jokes, inside jokes, corny jokes, music, shenanigans, hijinks, tomfoolery, silliness… and lots of laughing. Colleagues that have fun together, work hard together. And ultimately, it’s a good culture in which students can learn.

It’s good to have high expectations for students. It’s great to raise the bar. But here's the thing:  those high expectations are actually counterproductive if we do not simultaneously support, encourage, and empower our students to rise to the challenge.

It’s easier to throw stones than it is to make tough decisions. And sometimes… being a leader involves coming to terms with the fact that any decision you make, will be the “wrong” one to a whole lot of people.

Loyalty is not something to be demanded… it is something that great leaders INSPIRE. I loved working for leaders like that. They earned loyalty through their integrity and through their dedication to making decisions based on the best interest of those they lead.

Principals like for teachers to provide engaging instruction. Well teachers and students like for their principal to provide engaging leadership. It means walking around, having lots of conversations, being a cheerleader, working collaboratively, and caring about everyone.

“Please just let me teach!”  . School leaders need to recognize and appreciate this passionate plea that is felt by so many conscientious educators. And they should never stop exploring ways to minimize and streamline the extra paperwork.
