Hard agree. Current M3 and step tutor for our students, seeing the same thing happen (and happened to many in my class as well). Step 1 is still a VERY difficult exam to pass, a completely different beast than it was even 10 years ago

I’d argue that if you’re comparing effectiveness to traditional lectures, the study is not understanding how modern preclinical medical education actually works. There’s a reason that most students currently use a common set of 3rd party resources like B&B, Sketchy, and Pathoma

Today marks my last day of 2 months of IM and I’ve never been more confident in applying IM this upcoming cycle!

Taking Step exams soon? There’s an easy way to boost your score. Morning of the exam, play any song by Guns n Roses or Rage Against the Machine. Not sure why this isn’t listed in prep books. Tried and true.

The elephant in the room is that medical students have to learn two curriculum — in house material, and material to prep for boards. In an ideal world, they’d be completely overlapping Venn diagrams. In real life, they touch in the middle with large gaps on either side

#MedEd
faces a big challenge in preclinical education, with students having to study differently for in-house curriculum and third party resources.
Students feel the two have to be at odds with each other while simply trying to be efficient
Your school curriculum probably isn’t nearly enough to safely pass Step 1. Don’t over-rely on it during M1-2. Create a parallel curriculum of third-party resources early.
Yes it sucks to do prep simultaneously for in-house exams and boards, but it will pay off in the long run.

In my experience, it’s students studying, taking practice tests, scoring lower than passing, and having to delay. Studying for STEP has to happen alongside the preclinical curriculum, which unfortunately don’t cover the same things. Any current med student 1/2
