In the name of not gatekeeping information, here’s the skincare routine printout I came across on my dermatology rotation. I wish I could give credit to the dermatologist who wrote it but I don’t know who it was!!
My dad (who was a fireman) thinks I shouldn’t tell strangers I’m a doctor when they ask my profession because they’ll up charge me for stuff. He instead suggested I say I work in “maintenance” as in I “maintain the patients in a hospital” 😂
Pretty wild to go from having to take the MCAT twice and barely getting into a Med school to graduating magna cum laude. I remember my self-doubt the night before my first day of classes. Honestly, proud of myself.

I debating sharing this on here because I’m familiar with the data on how this can negatively impact women’s careers. But I share so much of this journey and I want to be transparent about all the aspects, and this is undoubtedly a big one! Baby Fitzgerald coming in October!!!
It’s me, hi, I’m the problem it’s me.
Sorry to all the people I’ve unintentionally stolen pens from. Idk how it happens!! They just end up in my pocket!! 😬🙈
It’s my birthday!!!! Normally I celebrate with big birthday parties or over the top activities. This year I’m celebrating by sleeping in and then taking a nap an hour after waking up. It was glorious. Happy intern year! 🎂🎉😴
I start my cardiac ICU rotation tomorrow with q3 28 hour call. Can’t wait to experience that exceptional clinical training that can only occur between hours 20 and 28 that I keep hearing about!!!
I’m in a mandatory, class-wide med school course that had a Women in Medicine Panel, which was amazing. But before it started there was a message that students for which this content “didn’t apply” were excused… I’m sorry but which group of students does this not apply to? 🤨🤦🏼♀️
9 months pregnant and ?thriving 😂
I actually think most patients love that I’m pregnant. It gives them insight into my life while I’m in there asking them a million and one questions about theirs. It opens a door to talk about families and life more generally- a way to connect
Obstetrics has the least evidence-based medicine out of any medical field and we should never label a woman as “non-compliant” when they refuse prenatal care that has never been demonstrated to improve outcomes.
For years I’d see posts from med students celebrating finding the perfect specialty for them. I was nervous I might never feel that way. NOT ANYMORE. After this week, I know oncology is it for me! I can’t imagine dedicating my life to anything other than cancer care 💖👩🏼⚕️
I really, really, really wish residency PDs would prioritize non-research extracurriculars as well. Things like outreach, advocacy, and volunteering are all equally valid contributions to society and the medical field.
Survey of PDs across the country:
Almost half (41%) stated that now, that step 1 is p/f,
research will be more important when it comes to offering interview invitations. The effect was most pronounced in competitive specialties.
I forgot to share my favorite piece of advice from the first day!
“Don’t stand when you can sit. Don’t sit when you can lay down. If you see a donut, eat it.” - Dr. Rebecca Baron, ICU attending.
What’s funny about getting yelled at by consults as an intern is like… clearly someone told me to consult you! I, the person who is on my third ED shift, did not independently make that decision! You’re yelling at the wrong person! 😂
This is likely an unpopular opinion, but I’m not convinced step 1 should have gone pass/fail. Especially with keeping step 2 scored. I 100% think clinical grades should be P/F because they are subjective and ripe with sexism, racism, homophobia, ect. Change my mind?
A real conversation I had months ago:
#DoubleDocs
Me: I’m an MD/PhD student with a PhD in cancer research!
Attending: well do you want to be in clinic or do you want to do research?
Me: both!
Attending: that’s not possible.
Me:……
Attending: not to discourage you

I’m excited to share my most recent review article which covers common 3D culture systems and how they have been used to further our understanding of cancer immunology and immunotherapy!

I got a glimpse of my intern schedule and I think I’m starting with a month of ICU!! I’ve never done and ICU rotation so I’m both excited and terrified. Any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙏

I will be 38 by the time I finish all my training. It would be nearly impossible for me to postpone childbirth until after training. I would be lying if I said my rank list wasn’t primarily determined by how amenable a program seems to pregnant people and new parents.

Their pregnancies were decades ago, and progress has been made, but this still rings so true.
I applied to mostly PSTP programs. Along the way I learned A LOT. Including that there are not many resources to learn about PSTP programs. So, after spending the past few months interviewing at programs, here’s a basic overview and what I’ve learned:

I’ve been reflecting on my MD/PhD experience and while I absolutely loved it, would I recommend it to other first-gen or low SES students? Probably not.
I accomplished my goal of pumping for 6 months! Out of everything I’ve accomplished (MD, PhD, pregnancy and childbirth during intern year) this was the hardest. The mental load, physical discomfort, manual labor and emotional rollercoaster was a lot. Thankful it’s done!
While we’re still riding this high, here’s the match moment, surrounded by family and friends. Peep my mom sobbing and my hard-of-hearing dad not understanding what’s happening 😂😭

@TheMahaSaleh
😂😂 NK and cytotoxic T cells have very similar functions (kill bad cells) but how they go about it is very different! T cells are adaptive immunity and NK cells are innate immunity!
Status post cardiac CCU! Ended with a bang on an absolutely wild call shift! It was a great rotation but happy I don’t have to do it again… until next year 🙈
I’m surprised people have an issue with this. I’m grateful to those who donated their bodies to science and medicine for my learning. You can simultaneously appreciate their gift and acknowledge that’s it’s traumatic and rarely discussed aspect of medical education.
When I tell people at work I have a 12 week old baby, I’m almost always asked who is at home taking care of her. I can’t help but wonder if my male colleagues are asked the same question…
Done with residency interviews!!
Thank you so much to everyone who invited me and took the time to meet me! I learned about myself, this career, and science and I had a blast doing it!
@ZJH47
Not at all! I definitely think he was asking on for himself. But the reality is women are often penalized for having children, and men are often rewarded for it. So it helps to have men ask these types of questions because it’s less likely to negatively impact them!
As people start drafting their rank lists, consider if the program has two week or four week blocks. As a med student I didn’t think two weeks would be long enough, but now as an intern, two weeks is perfect and having a be on the same service for 4+ weeks would be brutal.
As a med student, my first day on inpatient IM (a heme/onc floor) I “presented” my patient and then the fellow went through an extraordinarily thorough plan including chemos, cycles, radiation plans ect then looked me square in the eyes and asked “did I forget anything?”. A hero.
I used to be someone that always asked during women’s mentorship workshops “when is the best time to have kids?”. In hindsight, I think this question is not only ridiculous but harmful. 🧵
