Hi! I’m running this project.
There are millions of trans Americans, we poll 90% left-wing, our rights are under attack, & public opinion is on our side. But we need somewhere to organize that energy.
I believe DSA is the best-equipped org in the US to do it. Here’s why 🧵
Trans and abortion rights are the front lines of the fight against the far right and for working class liberation.
That's why this year, Trans Rights & Bodily Autonomy will join Labor and Climate work as national priorities for DSA.
Join us on Feb 3 ⬇️
This is the woman who filibustered the entire legislative session to stop anti-trans legislation. It’s not a moderate thing — she explicitly identifies as left — it’s that the democratic party is, in her words, “ideologically bankrupt”.
She was killed IN the police gunfight, BY the police. Her kidnapper is alive. They turned a kidnapping into a police murder by repeatedly and unnecessarily escalating the situation. No government should tolerate this — these cops should be fired and thrown in jail.
This is the second Nebraska state senator to promise to filibuster the entire session over an anti trans bill. Both her and Machaela Canavaugh have transgender children who would be forcibly detransitioned if it passes.
State Sen. Megan Hunt (D), speaking directly to Republicans, reaffirms vow to filibuster all legislation if

anti-trans bill passes:
"No one in the world holds a grudge like me. And no one in the world cares less about being petty than me. I don't care. I don't like you."
@nicolasblume
people registered under the party are but the political institution itself absolutely is not. the party doesn’t take a side on workers vs bosses, it wants to be a tent for both and the result is 400:1 ceo:worker pay ratio & record economic inequality idk what to tell you
Incoming mayor Brandon Johnson officially unveiled his "Unity Plan," a reshuffling of City Council leadership roles that upends aldermen's previously approved resolution.
This is a Viennese superblock called Alterlaa!
3200 units share 2 tennis courts 👁️, 14 pools (7 indoor), 22 saunas, several gyms, rec facilities, and much more — even schools & a subway station.
A 1-BR here is ~$600 because it’s owned by the people, not exploited by landlords.
@kelly_cadigan
thanks for thinking seriously about this and being willing to take new information and experiences into consideration. not everyone does, and i’m sorry that you were treated the way you were by people who wanted you to run cover for them
The fact that this battle over how the New York Times covers transgender americans is being waged along union vs anti-union lines explains everything you need to know about me. Solidarity is a survival tactic
“We are journalists, not activists”
Dozens of NYT journalists signed a letter objecting to the union’s support of criticism of the paper’s trans reporting. “We ask that our union work to advance, not erode, our journalistic independence,” they wrote
@miri_yam_
@wanna_bri
if you need any help or advice for this feel free to dm me! i work in tenants rights and have helped with habitability rent withholding in the past
Ithaca ctown
@SBWorkersUnited
workers just walked out! There’s been chronic understaffing, poor working conditions — & today, a grease trap failure that mgmt refuses to fix.
“Every day we come in there’s something broken they won’t fix… we shouldn’t have to deal with this.”
Absolutely staggering list of accomplishments in Minnesota’s 2023 legislative session that puts
@nydems
to shame. This is what we could be doing, with a functional state gov.
(btw there’s still time to pass
#goodcause
and protect millions of people from evictions & rent hikes)
With no votes to spare, Minnesota Democrats have implemented vast new social programs, enacted protections for groups threatened by far-right states and the Supreme Court, strengthened unions, poured money into schools, replaced infrastructure, and fed every Minnesota child.
"We have serious reservations that the UAW leadership can represent our values. They proudly call themselves democratic socialists"

cheers erupt as organizers announce campus police don’t plan on escalating against the encampment tonight.
camping students and faculty will continue negotiating with Cornell execs to divest university funds from weapons used in israel’s genocide of palestinians.
syracuse has the highest rate of child poverty in the entire country and still spends THOUSANDS in city $ to arrest a kid for a bag of chips. why? calling this system broken misses how it’s achieving its purpose here — enforcing race & class power lines at all costs.
hello i am trans, it costs you absolutely nothing to go vote to block a republican and if you’re not doing it bc it doesn’t feel epic enough you are a dumbass
DSA is not a perfect org. But it is 80k people, in 48 states, with 200 elected officials spanning every level of government. And it knows how to fight.
It has power, and is probably the largest organized group of unwaveringly pro-trans people in America. We need to use that.
leaving power on the table so you can exist without contradictions is not in any way “more radical”, it is a retreat to comfort in correctness while bearing none of the responsibility for possible failure that power vests you with. it’s lame
@JonDArsen
@nicolasblume
i work in the field of electing and organizing democrats and i 100% stand by the 2 party system being insufficient. people like megan who leave aren’t necessarily going republican; this is hopefully a foundation for a socialist party in the US which is badly needed

, use your supermajority and pass tenant protections like

to give New Yorkers immediate relief.
I think people should think very seriously about how when a similar bill passed in Montana yesterday, their one trans elected used her airtime to ask children not to commit suicide
Rep Zephyr, my partner, spoke passionately against SB99 in Montana, a gender affirming care ban for trans youth.
“If you’re trans, I have one request for you. Please stay alive.”
“We will win this fight. We’ll win in our communities. Every day we are out, we shift the needle.”
Ithaca just became a ceasefire city, passing 9-2 a resolution that:
- Calls for a permanent ceasefire
- Calls to end US military funding to Israel
- Acknowledges genocide in Gaza
Huge shoutout to
@IthSolidarity
elex Kayla Matos & Phoebe Brown for leading calls for peace 🌹🇵🇸❤️
if i were in the fbi and my job was to sabotage left organizing i’d wait for crisis moments and manipulate people into abandoning each other and whatever small amount of power they’ve built by demanding they adopt more and more absolutist positions and disavow anyone who won’t
This is the Karl Marx-Hof public housing development — one of the flagship projects of 1919-1934 Red Vienna.
Housing 5k people, it made waves by offering bathrooms, childcare, courtyards, shops, & more — all at <1/2 the cost of the destitute private market

NEW: Why didn't lawmakers tackle the rent crisis? Maybe because most of them don't rent themselves.
Lawmakers who own their homes are far less likely to support eviction protections and new housing supply than those who rent, we found.
“who needs voting when we can just do a revolution” dog if you can’t get people to pick up a pen i have bad news about getting them to pick up anything heavier
i know we say this as a joke a lot but people who think incarceration or eviction are ways to solve problems make me legit worried about their grasp on object permanence
“out of sight, out of mind” is the ideology behind both these practices & that’s embarrassing
as an epic organizer one of the first things i make sure to emphasize with large groups of people is that they are fundamentally unfit to be involved in collective struggle and have no personal stake in the outcome
look at the engagement for this tweet and what people are saying about it — dems serious about beating Rs should be incorporating this message into campaigning
Standing in the cold for 20 minutes last night, I talked to just one
#NY03
voter.
He was for Suozzi. Why, I asked?
“Well, I'm trans, so I'm not going to vote Republican because they're trying to kill us.” (1/3)
the Ithaca Police Department just released a statement saying protesters attacked a car yesterday. That’s a lie — I was hit by the car in question as it barreled through protesters, and we STILL made immense effort to de-escalate and get them talking calmly.

We’re ~1% of the population and our only shot at peace and acceptance is broad instillation of the value that “an injury to one is an injury to all”. The Guild president isn’t trans but stands for us bc, in her words, “these are principles that are at the core of trade unionism”
voting is probably the most mundane political act you can do. if you carry around some big cosmic analysis of what it Means about you as a Politics Consumer to not boycott it, you value your aesthetic & comfort more than you value power and are not a bag getter
if a dsa chapter, especially a large one, makes a local decision that seems weird or wrong i think the right way to interact with that (if you don’t live there) is to have some respect and leave room for the chance that they know things you don’t
check out this thread, the Zapatistas are no joke. They staged an uprising in 1994 and have maintained an autonomous society since then, one where “the people give the orders and the government obeys”. spiritual connection to land and things it bears are a key aspect of this, btw
The 300,000+ indigenous Mayans who make up the Rebel Zapatista Autonomous Municipalities (MAREZ) in Chiapas, Mexico have one of the most advanced systems of democratic, consensus-based governance in the world.
Here are some clips from “People Without Faces” (2016) that explain.
this was my arrest outside the station. i’m a trans woman, i’ve been in city meetings with monticello, he admits he knows me — he misgendered me repeatedly (maskless), outside and inside.
learn from me here: get the numbers *before* you protest. You aren’t invincible
#twithaca
Trans people are 1% of the population, but we need social & medical rights in a democracy. We can't secure that on our own.
We need cis people, and they need a reason to side with us. Socialist politics are founded on giving them that reason: solidarity.
If you're trans, we want you to know that you are loved. You are worth defending.
Socialists believe an injury to one is an injury to all — that means we're in this together. With nearly 100k members, 150+ chapters, and 200+ elected officials, DSA is ready to fight for you 🏳️⚧️🌹
if you actually believe the world needs to radically change you at some point have to confront how doing so requires getting your hands messy to take and use power. if you aren’t doing that, you are failing your own ideals and putting your comfort above others’ needs
This is the largest socialist legislative caucus in >100 years! If we elect 3 more, we’ll have the largest ever in american history (beating NY’s 10 in 1918 )
Public campaign financing launches in 2024 — come make history with us
@justindonnavan
@penne_bae_ker
to the american left she is considered essentially the worst of the democratic party; she is the party leader in congress and serves to protect the political establishment and its ties to capital. she’s currently campaigning for an anti-abortion democrat against a left challenger
That concept of achieving collective public good through social and economic equality also leads to other things trans people need, like universal healthcare, union rights at work, anti-discrimination laws, and — crucially — anti-fascism.
I don’t think the young people converting to catholicism thing is a joke! People are finding themselves overwhelmed by chaos & suffering & alienation and are looking for some kind of spiritual direction; it’s deeply sad to me that catholicism is the most readily offered option
1) Does hochul need us at the electoral table to win
2) If so, can we afford to walk away & get a far right trumpist governor
If either is a no, we have no power to extract concessions. Being real w ourselves about our power is important, even if it’s uncomfortable/humiliating
Senate & Assembly members, housing chairs, and progressive orgs rallying outside the Capitol to HOLD THE LINE on no budget without

the big short; it really helps people whose main relationship to housing/land is centered on use value to understand the perspective of institutional investors who relate to housing for its exchange/speculative value. incredibly accessible introduction to financialization
Insane to cut over 1/3 of org staff without touching political leader pay, dues share, or programs/ops. It’s the worst boss behavior and how you rob an institution of its soul. It would kill our organizing & tech capacity — the things we pay dues to build. They should pull this.
The NPC majority just dropped its plan to balance the budget—laying off 12 staff members, while voting to retain stipends for themselves. Genuinely disgusted.
We’re in one of the community rooms to learn about the Social Democratic Party. In the US, parties don’t really organize — movement work is left to private nonprofits or siloed community orgs. But in Austria, that organizing is done by the Party as part of their political program
We must build on the legacy of putting families first. It starts with safe & secure housing. Instead of affording rent, we must widen our focus to help NYers build wealth through homeownership. Let’s put our energies toward meaningful & sustainable solutions to our housing crisis
needs to be more discussion of how “small landlord” rhetoric functions to protect the profit/interests of an industry that for the most part isn’t actually run by “small landlords” & doesn’t care about them. big real estate knows this works — it’s in all their talking point lists
This video of a cop saying “we’re union as well” while breaking up a union picket is the perfect encapsulation of why police can’t be grouped in with normal workers. They serve the unique role of crushing labor actions on behalf of bosses/owners.
Cornell called the police on students who were selling coffee outside the dining hall to raise money for striking Starbucks workers.
Workers and students are protesting the company's decision to shut down all their stores in Ithaca — all of which are unionized.
Underreported that
@GovKathyHochul
's lobbying records show her office met with real estate *260 times* in a year — there are only 250 work days! She hasn't met w/ tenants ONCE.
Totally corrupt & soulless while negotiating a housing package. Press should be asking her about this!
Last week we requested a meeting with
@GovKathyHochul
, after revealing she meets with real estate lobbyists almost daily. She has yet to respond.
Dorca, a tenant forced to leave her longtime Inwood home because of a massive rent hike, has a message for her: meet with tenants!
in the liberated zone with kale salad and ceviche. 2 elex visits down 2+ to go. one had to leave bc she was sent threats. kids are calling their parents to tell them they might get suspended, arrested, or worse. deadline to vacate was 4hrs ago.
Organizers EXPANDED the encampment area significantly in the last few minutes, re-hammering down the wooden stakes supporting the black tarp that marks the parameters of the zone.
Lastly — being really informed & mad about the news doesn’t automatically give trans people power. We need to channel our energy into something that does.
DSA’s membership has voted to give us the keys to a national political institution. You should join.

i wouldn’t go so far as voting for his policy platform, it seems like liberal economy bro wonkery and denounces defunding the police, but the publicity game is respectable
