I spent time with the 59th Brigades "Shkval" battalion outside the city of Toretsk. Its made up of Ukranian prisoners who volunteered to join the army by taking advantage of the presidential decree, giving them the offer to trade life behind bars for the service on the frontline.
I embedded with the 59th Mechanized Brigades "Shkval" battalion, made up of volunteer recruited from the Ukrainian prison system. These convicted criminals are given a choice of waving the remainder of your time behind bars in exchange for military service until the wars end.
