people disagreeing with me about the trades like me and most of my classmates wouldnât jump on the opportunity to apprentice in carpentry if there were any slots available đ .
oh also if anyone was curious how I've been spending my sabbatical, I've been learning carpentry at my local community college! it's been life changing and I'm looking forward to taking even more carpentry classes in the fallđЎ

You know what has actually disappeared? The support structure to train someone to master the craft. This goes for almost all things. Yes, including engineering and design jobs. Everyone wants masters but no one wants to train apprentices.
Interestingly, this goes for almost all things. Signs/sign painting. Carpentry. Ceramics. Icon design. Everything has been optimized for easy creation, which eroded the main barrier to entry: having to master a craftâs complex tools & methods, which led to better products.

the palm pre and microsoft zune are the two products that were way ahead of their time that few people appreciate and I will gladly give an impromptu lecture to anyone within earshot about it with even the slightest provocation.
people forget how influential Palm webOS was. lots of modern iOS uses similar patterns. palm was basically the OpenAI of their time. such talent density that Steve Jobs had to threaten them to stop poaching. ⢠horizontal app card multitasking w/ flick up to quit.⢠edge swipe

RT @lauren_wilford: being an âadult beginnerâ at anything is a cringe gauntlet. On the other side, though, is the reward of knowing that liâŚ.

so when itâs AI itâs cool, but when I do it itâs âwhy do you know this?â and âcanât you just be chill youâre killing the vibe of this partyâ đ.
I want an AI product that inhabits my AirPods and continually mutters interesting things about the world around me, like an indefatigably burbling tour guide. "The San Mateo Bridge was built in about a year. When it opened on 2 March 1929, it stretched 7.1 miles, making it.

the work I'm proudest of in my career will disappear tonight when the clock strikes midnight, even though it had a community of ardent supporters. it's the worst part about being a product designer.
This week, I've gotten several emails from teams announcing that they will shut down their products in the next few days. It saddens me to see amazing and successful products die, not because they didn't have users but because they couldn't deliver infinite growth.
