Interestingly, this goes for almost all things. Signs/sign painting. Carpentry. Ceramics. Icon design. Everything has been optimized for easy creation, which eroded the main barrier to entry: having to master a craft’s complex tools & methods, which led to better products.
Fine craftsmanship is a singular rarity in this day and age. It is nearly non-existent. It used to be commonplace not so long ago.

Between the 12th and 18th centuries, the MANICULE (☞) was likely the single most common symbol used in marking texts anywhere. Yet, it strangely disappeared from marginalia in the 1800s. (Sherman, 2005). Odd, since everyone intuitively knows what it means.
