Over the past week, @arcinstitute published three new discoveries that I’m very proud of. • The world's first functional AI-generated genomes. Using Evo 2 (the largest biology ML model ever trained, which Arc released in partnership with @nvidia in February), Arc scientists

The UC San Diego Senate Report on Admissions documents a sharp decline in students’ math and reading skills—a warning that has been sounded before, but this time it’s coming from within the building....
This week, a math professor at MIT told me that incoming students are, on average, noticeably worse at math than they used to be. Harvard, of course, just added a remedial math class, Math MA5, "aimed at rectifying a lack of foundational algebra skills among students".

David Ricks is very impressive -- I really enjoyed this one.
Dave Ricks has been at @EliLillyandCo for 20% of its 150-year history. He came to the pub, poured his own Guinness, and gave us a 2-hour state of the pharma union: drug prices, clinical trials, patent clocks, the rise of generics, Chinese peptides, compounding pharmacies, the US

Today I had lunch with twelve young Irish people -- a wonderful bunch in their early 20s working on rockets, biotech, software/AI, etc. I enquired about whether any were planning on leaving Ireland over the next 3 years. All hands but one went up. I asked the holdout why he was

Intercom ran an A/B test and found that @link increased their conversion rate by 5.4%. Not a small effect size!
It shouldn’t be surprising that conversion goes up when you reduce friction: Adding @stripe Link to @intercom's main checkout flow has increased conversion by 5.4%! We’re excited to add more payment options soon for our customers and for our business.

For years @patrickc + @collision told me "You should add @link, it'll increase your conversion rate" I always figured Link was only useful for consumer-y impulse buys, not Serious Business Stuff™️ But...TL;DR: we added @link and it increased our conversion rate. Lesson learned

Congrats to Mesa, a new code review agent, on the launch—see their video below! Agents, now deployed at scale, require new business models. Mesa is one of the early users of @stripe's token billing infrastructure, powering their "Pay-per token" pricing: https://t.co/R8noceFlQU
Mesa is free to use, up to 100,000 lines of code reviewed every month! If you buy credits you can use the best foundation models like 4.1 Opus and gpt-5-pro. You can sign up directly on our site at: https://t.co/n7xopmFYFx

@BillCoughran @GuptaRK22 is an endless source of practical wisdom, commercial nous, and behind-the-scenes support. Anyway, I didn't mean to try to enumerate everything -- it would be infeasible. There are just a lot of excellent people there.

John and I love working with Sequoia. @LucianaLix is a fantastic board member at Stripe. (And before her, @moritzKBE contributed immeasurably to making the company what it is today.) This transition is bittersweet for us: @roelofbotha is a deeply-trusted advisor and mentor,

An interesting trend we're noticing at Stripe: US startups are pulling ahead of their peers elsewhere. These charts show averaged revenue growth for software startups in each location. US startups typically grow somewhat faster than those elsewhere. However, since mid-2023, US

Trick-or-treating. My parents, who have been living in the same suburban home for over 40 years and thus have longitudinal data, report that they don't get nearly as many trick-or-treaters on Halloween as they used to pre-covid.
Maybe a very prosaic observation, but I've been reflecting on just how much the pandemic changed the world in ways that are completely unrelated to the pandemic itself. I think I've underestimated it 'till now. In a recent interview, I was struck by the comment that so many of

What’s the best thing written about why the remarkably vigorous and inventive France of the 70s and 80s (TGV, Minitel, Ariane, Rafale, Concorde, the world’s preeminent nuclear grid…) has not been nearly as visible in the 21st century? What went wrong?
