The Russo-Ukrainian war started at 4.30 AM on February 27th 2014 when Russian troops took control of the Crimean Parliament building in Simferopol. The invasion of Crimea was followed by the invasion of Donbass in March 2014. The war has been going on ever since.
Went out to get gasoline today. 20 liters maximum. Drove some 15 km in Kyiv and then back again. Without going into details I conclude it will not be easy, I think impossible, for Russia to take the city.
Great irony that the Azov fighters in Mariupol, so often accused of being far right extremists, are sacrificing their lives for democracy while supposedly pacifist intellectuals in Europe are using their pens to the advantage of Russian fascism.
"Putin's war" is a dangerous narrative that creates a risk of enormous errors when dealing with Russia after Putin. Putin hasn't been fighting in Ukraine, Putin didn't rape women in Bucha - Putin has millions of supporters doing the dirty work on his behalf. It's not just Putin.
It's hard to underestimate the size of the scandal that is ongoing in Germany now with regards to the government's Russia policy. Calling it the scandal of a century is not an overstatement, and it will haunt official Germany for a long time to come.
Russia's war against Ukraine will end with the break-up of the Russian Federation. It will be replaced by small, demilitarized and powerless republics with neutrality written into their constitutions.
Four things we should push for:
1. More weapons to Ukraine
2. No fly zone over Ukraine, by NATO or donated NATO planes
3. Total embargo on Russian oil and gas
4. Cut all remaining Russian banks from SWIFT
Retweet if you agree!
A total boycott on Russian oil and gas could end the war. If oil and gas were boycotted it would hit Russia so hard that Russia might agree to a ceasefire, which could end the killing of Ukrainian civilians. Russian oil and gas have to be boycotted.
This is huge. If confirmed, and Ukraine manage to keep the siege, this could become the first major victory of the war. An entire Russian army could be erased. I hold by breath waiting for confirmation.
According to unconfirmed but realistic looking reports, Russian troops have got surrounded in Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel area near Kyiv, cut from supplies. If true - the biggest defeat of a Russian army until now, and Ukraine needs to start worrying about too many POWs.
Day 10 and Russia has failed to take Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kyiv. When will Putin understand he has lost the war? Does he understand he doesn't have enough soldiers to waste to take all those cities?
About 400 Swedes have so far signed up to be volunteers in the Ukrainian Army. Not bad for a small country only a few days after the call for military volunteers went out. The Foreign Legion in Ukraine could become forceful.
EU countries should keep in mind that Ukraine is letting its blood for them. Ukraine has called Russia's bluff and exposed the Russian army to be rubbish. For each tank, airplane, artillery piece etc that Ukraine destroy there is one less for Europe to worry about.
Not only must Russia suffer a real defeat in Ukraine, one Russia cannot rise from for generations, but France and Germany must also lose their positions of power in Europe. France's and Germany's appeasement of Russia is one of the biggest reasons European security has collapsed.
Heard from woman in Kyiv with a conscript brother in Belarusian army. He had been brought to the border for some fake reason. Now that he understands what's coming he said "Go to war against my sister?!", I will surrender at the first possible moment. Young, unaware, unmotivated.
Germany should be willing to sacrifice something to stop the war in Ukraine.
Keep in mind that one thing that Germany has in common with Russia is that Germany too has bombed out Ukrainian cities and killed civilians in Ukraine. Now Germany can at least try to do the right thing.
It just struck me that the Ukraine I lived in for twelve years will never come back. It's gone forever. After victory there will be a new Ukraine, a better one in many ways I am sure. Still I am struck by a great amount of nostalgia.
About the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Don't trust anything Russia says, or signs. Russia cannot be trusted with anything. Russia has to be confronted with blunt force. Ukraine has to retake the lost land and the West has to crush Russia's economy. Then, maybe, peace.
I have a source who is in contact with Russian soldiers participating in the war.
Short summary:
- Soldiers are dejected
- Logistics is 0/10
- Worst military operation they ever took part in
- Motivation is at all time low
In addition to the fire at the arms depot and munitions storage in Bryansk, it appears that the part of the railway that transports Russian armor into Ukraine was damaged as well
I went shopping in Kyiv today. The situation is better than one could expect given the circumstances, but somewhat weird to hear artillery shelling while on the way to the local store. People are calm and there was plenty of goods in the store I went to.
Russia has destroyed a major Ukrainian grain export terminal in Mykolaiv that plays a crucial role in international food security. This targeted attack is further evidence that Putin is weaponising global famine in a bid to blackmail the international community
Standing in line to a pharmacy in Kyiv. Been here for a while. People around me discuss the war. Random people join in and ask about particular villages around Kyiv and which weapons are used against aircraft and more. People are calm, determined.
Despite the atrocities Russia has committed in Ukraine the German government continue to block harsh sanctions, like an embargo on oil and gas purchases. What does "Never Again" really mean for
@Bundeskanzler
and his government?
Ukrainians are cornered. Either they sacrifice themselves on the battlefield or they will be massacred while under Russian occupation. Most prefer to fight until the end rather than suffer under occupation. This is the reason Ukraine will win, because it has no other choice.
Report from Kyiv. Took a walk in the neighborhood and it wasn't so bad. I saw a local street market, very common in "normal" Kyiv but not seen for the last three weeks. Limited offer but still plenty of cabbage, potatoes and some vegetables.
If you want Russia to continue slaughter civilians and win the war against Ukraine you continue buying Russian oil and gas.
If you want to end the war and stop the slaughter, and have a more secure Europe you stop buying Russian oil and gas.
Pretty simple.
Report from Kyiv. Artillery is firing, it has kept pressure on the Russian forces north west of Kyiv. Earlier I was out driving and I am impressed with how fast the volunteers have become soldiers. They are well armed and have protection. It's obvious they learned a lot, fast.
BREAKING: ⚡️ Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had a heart attack. Therefore, he has not appeared at official events since mid-March,” writes Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
More sanctions needed:
1. Boycott Russian oil and gas BEFORE more Ukrainians die
2. Cut remaining Russian banks from SWIFT
3. Sanction western companies doing business in, and with, Russia
Please share if you agree!
Are you frustrated beacause you feel you can't do do something to stop Russia's war against Ukraine? Actually you can. Find every company with business ties to Russia and pressure them to exit Russia. Contact them, name them shame them. Together we can do it.
I think the EU and NATO should cut all economic ties with Russia, including energy. That could make Russia collapse. A few weeks with gas and oil rationing is a low price to pay for the war to stop.
What's holding Germany back from cutting its ties to Russia? My speculation is that there are currently four old men who are playing key parts in German Russia policy. Gerhard Schröder, Frank Walter Steinmeier, Sigmar Gabriel and Olaf Scholz.
I think Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland should close their borders to Russia and Belarus. No trade, no traffic with the aggressor. Just do it!
Poland propose a total trade embargo against Russia. I hope it will happen. Russia needs to be pushed really hard now, then Russia might consider to stop the war.
Driving around in Kyiv. Most intense traffic since February 24th. I never thought I would appreciate traffic in Kyiv but today I am happy to see that the city is coming back to life.
Russia's destruction of civilian factories and infrastructure tells a lot about Russia's plans for Ukraine. Russia has no interest in a functioning Ukraine even if Russia would occupy it, the war is only about destroying Ukraine. Pure punishment.
The Russian air force completelly destroyed the one of the largest in

Rocket launchers, howitzers, tanks, amphibious missiles, suicide drones, helicopters and more. Finally the flow of weapon to Ukraine is including some heavy stuff. More to come I am sure, more and faster. Slowly but surely the western world is in it to assist a Ukrainian victory.

The Russian soldier and his wife, who got permission to rape Ukrainian women, have been identified and they confirm the conversation and the permission given.
The Ukrainian military report that another Russian ship has been hit in the Black Sea. When Ukraine has won the war there will be a whole new tourist industry built around wreckage diving.
#Ukraine
's General Staff reported that
#Russia
has lost another ship. The MP from Odesa and local media outlets claim it is the Russian Navy patrol ship Admiral Makarov, an Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate.
Needs to be confirmed.
Europe should stop buying Russian oil and gas. The winter season is over, time to isolate houses, push electric cars and renewable energy. Park your car and use a blanket, for Ukraine!
Short report regarding food supplies in Kyiv. The situation in my local store is good. Plenty of everything one needs to get by. Huge delivery of bottled water had just come in. No more photos though, security enlightened me that the photo ban also includes the inside of stores.
Russia bombs the weakest members of society, the pregnant women and their newborns. The enormity of the crimes committed by Russia in the war against Ukraine is hard to grasp. Photo from the Russian attack against a maternity clinic in Mariupol by

If
@EmmanuelMacron
and
@Bundeskanzler
think they can force a dictate peace (Minsk III) on Ukraine they should think again. Ukrainian society is boiling over with hatred against Russia and Russians. This nation will fight until it has full control over its territory.
Russia occupied Crimea and Donbas in 2014 under the fake pretext of protecting the Russian-speaking population. But no country in the world has killed as many Russian-speaking people as Russia did.
#StandWithUkraine
To save Ukraine, and Europe, from Russian aggression we need:
More weapons to Ukraine, with more weapons Ukraine can win the war.
Much harder sanctions on Russia, with less money Russia cannot finance the war.
Pro-Russian demonstration in Frankfurt in Germany. It's not just Putin. Here are people living in a free society, with access to free media, who are supporting the atrocities Russia is committing in Ukraine.

Now Germany is hinting that an oil embargo against Russia might be possible within days thanks to a deal with Poland. Fascinating how things that were impossible a few days ago are now possible.
German leaders should consider what their objections to harder sanctions against Russia will do to Germany's reputation. I don't think Germans will enjoy being asked about why Germany didn't do what it could to stop Russia for a generation to come.
Sanctions against Russia aren't only about changing Putin's calculus, then the war would have stopped already, sanctions are about depriving Russia of the resources it needs to execute the war and function as a society. It will be harder for Russia to fight wars if it's poor.

I went shopping in Kyiv. Despite the long lines to the shop people behaved very orderly. No complaining, no loud voices, no arguing about products in the shop. Plenty of goods left apart from bread and diary. Toilet paper left. Jokes like" It's so hard to chose" were heard.
Air raid ongoing in Kyiv now. I hope Ukraine manage to fire missiles at Russian cities too soon so the Russians can experience how it feels to hear the sirens and the minutes thereafter when you have no idea if it's your turn to bid farewell.
Russia is losing in Ukraine so it needs to move more guns in. If Russia was winning we wouldn't see these trains. Soon the Russian stock will be empty.
Poland has understood how things are. There can be no business with Russia. The Russian Federation needs to be delivered a blow that it will remember for generations to come.
"After Bucha, Borodianka, Mariupol, there can be no business with Russia" - Polish President Andrzej Duda, speaking now to the Ukrainian parliament (but probably aiming his comments at his French, German and Hungarian counterparts).
So today we have learnt that according to
@ZelenskyyUa
@EmmanuelMacron
wanted Ukraine to make consessions and
@Bundeskanzler
wants a ceasefire. Both beneficial for Russia. Good to know who are your friends and who are not.
Where is the White House's response to Putin's nuclear threat? This is now beyond Ukraine. Russia is seeking a direct confrontation with NATO. The nuclear threat is a very serious escalation.
National Gene Bank of Plants of Ukraine destroyed by the Russian army 🧬🌱
It kept more than 160 thousand varieties of plant seeds, and hybrids of agricultural crops, including some of those that no longer exist in Europe, and in the entire world.
As long as the EU doesn't stop buying oil and gas from Russia, and enforce a total trade embargo, the war in Ukraine will continue. If the EU would boycott all trade with Russia the war might come to an end very soon. An easy choice one would think.
@AVindman
Translation: Just in the Kiev region, near Severinovka, the Russian occupation forces came into battle with ... the Russian occupation forces. As a result, thanks to "friendly fire", 9 tanks and 4 armored personnel carriers were destroyed. Accordingly, it saved us 13 Јavelin./1
Maybe the best way to motivate the Russian people is to sanction the country so hard that they all lose their jobs. Maybe then they will miss their iPhones, Mercedes and Sushi bars so much that they will actually protest against Putin in larger numbers.
Great speech by Zelenskyy. He comes out well in English too. Ukraine must receive more arms. There is no time to wait. By defeating Russia Ukraine is improving security for all of Europe. Take your time to listen and please share the post.

It's not just Putin. When large groups of, presumably Russians, demonstrate in support of Russia's brutal war against Ukraine we know the rot in among Russians go far beyond Putin and his small inner circle.
An enormous car parade of cars with mostly Russian flags in Berlin,

They can't complain about the media blackout in Germany. They have access to information and can see what Russians did in Bucha.
"The realization that refusing to shut off the flow of Russian gas makes Germany de facto complicit in mass murder will finally be enough to induce real action."
- Paul Krugman
Sanction all western companies doing business in Russia or with any Russian entities. Supporting the Russian war machine is not morally acceptable. Retweet if you agree.
The new MLRS that Ukraine will get from the U.S. and the U.K. will be able to reach Snake Island from the Ukrainian mainland. Could be a good opportunity to erase the Russian presence there.
Sweden set to apply for NATO membership after the social democrats endorse membership today. Russia made two neutral countries change near dogmatic positions in a matter of months and got NATO way closer on its northern flank. Молодец!
This is not the time to wait. All ties with Russia must be severed immediately. Sports, technology, investments, travel, trade. It must really hurt and it must also provoke the Russian population to protests. Protests in Russia is one of the few ways to stop this carnage.
🚩The Ukrainian army reportedly recaptured Lukyanovka, east of Kyiv, destroying three tanks and 9 Infantry Fighting vehicles in the process.
This is an important counter-offensive, as Lukyanovka is on the Russian supply line to Velyka Dymerka, near Brovary.
Some good news yesterday:
- 40+ nations met in Ramstein to discuss support for Ukraine. That is a great coalition forming.
- Germany announced deliveries of heavy weapons and hinted an oil embargo might be possible soon.
- Ukraine continue striking targets inside Russia.
