I’m in Uxbridge asking Boris Johnson’s constituents if they’d vote for him again as their MP and a man just spat on me and screamed an array of profanities in my face for ‘Boris bashing’. Anyway, apparently working in PR is fun. Or finance. Just a thought.

Matt Hancock gave a speech at a Bright Blue event last night, on how to get young people connected to the Conservative Party. He said he rarely wears a suit or tie as he’s ‘a normal person now’ which helps him to better connect to people he represents. A few things stood out🧵⬇️

Just prior to Lee Anderson’s resignation, a senior Conservative MP told me: “He’s wanted an ‘out’ of the party for ages. He just needed an excuse -an issue which allowed him to resign as a martyr of the right like Suella did.” “He is not a true Conservative and he knows that.”

He’s no longer a Conservative MP. He’s Independent as he lost the whip over his fleeting dabble in reality TV. Speaking about how the Conservatives should connect with young people whilst not a Conservative, comes across more critically than it would had he still been a member.

Sunak is dodging the question about whether or not HS2 will go ahead on BBC Manchester. He says “most people travel by car” and talks about how he plans to fix potholes. Can’t help but wonder if people travel by car because of the lack of decent trains? Just a thought.

Why should the taxpayer keep Channel 4? Why do we need a biased news channel and shows in which single men and women pick partners by viewing their genitalia on national telly? We’re also skint, why shouldn’t we sell it? Aptly, I’m minded to say the Tories have lost their balls!

Some people just don’t take him seriously as a politician any more - from his tv appearance to his regular tiktoks, some say that what he cites as ‘connecting to young people’ actually just crosses a line that politicians need to stay behind. Mixed views on this though!

Losing the whip is often associated with shame and not meant to be seen as a positive (it’s effectively a punishment!) so it’s interesting to see that Hancock has not taken it this way. Instead, he is citing ‘freedom’ - in a similar to way to Andrew Bridgen.

There are 650 MPs. Only 360 cast their votes, which means a significant amount of abstentions. However, having 354 MPs officially agree that you, as a Prime Minister, lied to and purposely misled the house, is still extremely significant in historical terms.

It’s far more nuanced than this. It’s not just one thing. Farmers can’t afford to turn their greenhouses on, avian flu is still rife, fuel and transport costs are too high, there’s a shortage of workers, Brexit, climate change. These, plus more, have contributed to empty shelves.
