Abundance campus organizing mentioned in the WSJ :). I care about this movement because my generation grew up in an era of dysfunctional, antagonistic, and reactive politics. Abundance focuses on outcomes, progress, and a vision for better days ahead. More coming soon!

Super excited to bring these ideas to campus—this spring, Stanford Abundance is hosting a course on the movement backed by our polisci department. We'll learn from @ezraklein/@DKThomp's book, @NiskanenCenter, and more. Plus, we're thrilled to feature speakers like @pahlkadot!

If liberals do not want Americans to turn to the false promise of strongmen, they need to offer the fruits of effective government. But that means admitting where the governments they run have gone wrong.

Finally, when running, candidate-district fit (e.g., based on demographics and voting patterns) is crucial. Maintain, like King said, the mind of a serpent & heart of a dove. Express the Drum Major Instinct, the desire to be significant, for goodness. (END).

Politics nationalizing is part of the story of dysfunctional local govt—people voting to express values that translate poorly (e.g. defunding police). Combined w/ a fragmented media ecosystem rewarding big issues, this shift has led to hacking attention. (H/T @zack)! (4/5).

The iceberg is SF’s bureaucracy: $14.6bn budget. 34,000+ employees. 54 boards & commissions. This is what delivers services. Like the Progressive Movement, the business elite, winners of the info/computing revolution, have a civic duty to help reform govt, the iceberg. (3/5).

Michael's Analogy: SF's a circus on top of an iceberg. The circus—politicians, advocacy orgs, etc.—creates headlines, a live-streamed spectacle. This can magnify issues (e.g., crime going viral) and misattribute them (e.g., downtown recovery isn't SF specific). (2/5).

In CA, 121 people will make or break a bill: the state legislature and the governor. Build the coalition that wins—not the coalition you think you should have or one that your funders want. This prevents ornamental policy (see: Ezra Klein's everything-bagel-liberalism). (5/6).

YIMBY advocacy efforts first started with specific projects and developments. Realizing there were thousands of municipalities to organize, @cayimby's innovation was state-level advocacy & proposing legislative solutions that would deliver. (4/6).

CA’s housing crisis:. (1) Illegal to build in many areas. 94% of San Jose is zoned for single-family homes!.(2) Even when legal, permission is needed & often blocked. Anyone can sue. (3) Building itself is extremely expensive. Sunnyvale charges thousands in park fees. (3/6).
