A reliable measure of competition is the holy grail of economic policy. It turns out such a measure exists: the Olley-Pakes decomposition. Today in Works in Progress, @briancalbrecht explains how it works. https://t.co/ndhwGG2ziq

In the early 1980s, the watchmakers of Switzerland faced an existential problem: a new technology that produced watches cheaper, more accurate, and functionally superior in every way to anything they made at the time. I wrote something for @worksinprogmag about the fightback -

Japanese quartz made watches accurate, lightweight, and thin. But Swiss mechanical watches fought back.

Over half of Swiss watchmakers went bankrupt in the 1970s. The industry was saved only because three men — Jacques Piguet, Claude Biver, and Nicholas Hayek — set out to snatch it from obsolescence. Today in Works in Progress, @aled_mj explains how.
Japanese quartz watches, from the likes of Seiko & Casio, were an extinction-level event for traditional Swiss watchmakers. But the Swiss struck back, building the simplest and most popular watches the world had ever seen. New at Works in Progress. https://t.co/yxfKqFq0ZZ

Nearly every city in the Western world banned dense urban building in the space of a few decades. In the Great Downzoning, new from Works in Progress, we finally explain why – and how we could reverse it.
In 1900, you could redevelop a suburban neighbourhood into dense mid-rise almost anywhere in the world. Today, you can do it almost nowhere. I call this phenomenon the ‘Great Downzoning’. The Great Downzoning is the main cause of housing shortages around the world. Below you

Every generator is a policy failure https://t.co/jSfJF6aOgP

Power outages force businesses across Africa to rely on expensive, dirty diesel generators. Price caps block improvement, but removing them isn’t easy.
This Economist piece on the world being on the verge of a geothermal energy breakthrough has simply intensified my hatred of the "solar revolution" going on in poor countries. Rant 🧵

Great article by @alexkesin on the history of colchicine. Renaissance physician John Gerard once declared it “very hurtfull to the stomacke”. Modern research has since shown how to dose it properly, to use as a treatment for gout and heart disease. https://t.co/rqlTn9vs4a

For centuries it was a poison. Then colchicine rewrote treatment for gout, heart disease, and later, the debate over drug exclusivity.

Colchicine is one of few substances that was familiar in antiquity and has modern FDA approval. It also led to an overhaul of American pharmaceutical policy. https://t.co/kjG2jjmyuy

In 1965, married American women did 34 hours of housework weekly. By 2010, that had fallen to 18 hours. The dishwasher wasn’t the only cause, but it certainly helped. https://t.co/qftTKKU8Rf

AND IT IS OUT! We have had enough reports saying Europe is stagnating. Change is not possible if we do not change the way the EU works. With Bengt Holmstrom and @competitionprof , I argue the EU should focus on prosperity and stop regulating everything. https://t.co/iZnCssIiP7

Fertility is collapsing all around the world, not just in the developed West: - Mexico now has lower fertility than the US (even non-Hispanic whites!). - Arab-Israeli fertility is now lower than that of Jewish Israelis. - For first time in 200 years, rich people are having MORE
