Or I like the "First Law" books by Joe Abercrombie but "haha nobody in this story has had any agency all along" after 1500 pages was...easier to appreciate intellectually than to enjoy, maybe...

We can't have two economically illiterate parties, it's like having two fun parents, we're all gonna starve to death.
Why is the Center for American Progress running interference for the Jones Act https://t.co/VbfRrBFPh4

Happy to share a summary of my job market paper on whether paternity leave can reduce intimate partner violence at @EconomicMisfit 📊 I show the policy reduces violence, not because relationship quality improves, but because couples become more likely to separate.

Having high standards in a field doesn't *feel* like having high standards. It feels like everyone else has bafflingly low standards and almost no one is even trying.

we read some older poetry anthologies here. i made this because i felt like there wasn't one that "went hard" in the way i would. really making a package where the message is: you, as an english speaking kid, have this huge treasure chest of linguistic artistry waiting for you.

This also applies to rules of procedure
Among the really key things/skills I learned in school is that when you want to pick fights with authority, you can be *either* insubordinate in style or insubordinate in substance, but *never* both at the same time. You must choose the right method on a case-by-case basis

it always drove me crazy in school that 1) I wast allowed to leave standardized testing early 2) I wasn’t allowed to read a book while I waited for the testing period to end I should have rebelled harder against this but my parents (god bless them) had trained me to follow

I started dating my now wife by showing her a power point presentation explaining how statistically speaking we were already dating so we should just make it official.
Autistic: “I enjoy talking to you. Statistically this is unusual for me.” Them: “Is… that flirting?” Autistic: “Yes. I believe so.”

@ASFleischman It feels like there is probably an argument about overcharging that could be made here. You know, where you acknowledge what happened and charges for the one guy that shot the cop in the neck. The initial discussions instead *failed to mention* the cop who got shot in the neck.

disgusting if true. Imagine supporting a government that does this
Israelis are so depraved that they actually pay a large cash stipend if someone goes to prison for killing Muslim children. If the person serves more than five years, they get a stipend for life. It takes up a huge portion of the budget, but it is immensely popular. Evil.

Costco is launching a new program that aims to make IVF treatment more affordable for couples hoping to start a family. Medications typically can cost thousands of dollars out of pocket, but Costco says the program could help cut the price by up to 80%. https://t.co/IH4nqi8Bvb

Who called it "Effective Altruism" and not "Crazy Rich Bayesians"?
Anthropic's founders and employees are about to have a lot of cash. Many of them have pledged to give away huge amounts of that cash. But where's it gonna go? @cogcelia took a look in this excellent new piece:

The best version of the Democratic Party is a party that taxes the public to fund an efficient, simple, robust safety net, and that can build public infrastructure fast. The worst version of the Democratic Party is economic slop about 'nobody should pay taxes but millionaires',
