Today I got the closest I've ever been to a takehe. This giant flightless rail was long thought extinct from ~1898 until it's rediscovery in 1948. They now only survive in offshore islands and bird sanctuaries like Zealandia, where I photographed this beauty.

I don't like criticising other cultures, but this is one of the most horrific examples of animal cruelty I have ever seen, and the fact that it is legal is genuinely disgusting.
