Canadian research scientist at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Exploring the impact of aging, frailty and sex hormones on health, especially heart health.
Joined February 2012
Always a great pleasure to work with Rob Rose @dysrhythmology exploring how frailty sets the stage for late life heart diseases like HF and AF.
@SusanEHowlett and I have reviewed the effects of frailty on the heart in aging. Available here: Preclinical Studies on the Effects of Frailty in the Aging Heart - Canadian Journal of Cardiology

Our new review in @Cell_Metabolism on the relationship between Metabolism and Frailty is now live! Discusses how maintaining a youthful metabolism in later life can help prevent frailty. Congrats to co-authors including @Alice_E_Kane @mmishrabio

Thanks for the generous comments Sofie. It was a real honour to be invited to speak at the First Canadian Conference on Geroscience.
Exciting talk on Frailty and how to measure it in mice and humans by @SusanEHowlett in Montreal! Very inspiring!

Thanks to @APSPublications for this honour. Also, a big thank you to the Editors and Reviewers for their thoughtful input into our work.
These authors won the #APSselect award in @ajpheartcirc for "Chronic testosterone deficiency increases late inward sodium current & promotes triggered activity in ventricular myocytes from aging male mice"👏 https://t.co/V3kRXzNHjx

Us too. The emergency line is busy. Very worrying.
@HalifaxWater our house and our neighbour (and quite likely others) just lost water pressure here in south end Halifax. Just in time for your customer care centre to close for the long weekend…

Our new work shows chronic exposure to low testosterone increases late inward sodium current in the aging heart by increasing expression of NaV1.8. This can help explain arrhythmias in older men. Great to work on this with the Rose lab in Calgary. @dysrhythmology
Great to collaborate with @SusanEHowlett and her team on this study: Chronic Testosterone Deficiency Increases Late Inward Sodium Current and Promotes Triggered Activity in Ventricular Myocytes from Aging Male Mice

Our new editorial in Aging. This paper highlights the fact that many commonly used reference genes are modified not only by age, but by sex and by the degree of frailty.

Molecular studies use reference genes that involve enzymes and proteins that regulate key physiological processes. We show that the expression of many common reference genes in mouse skeletal muscle is modified by age, sex, and frailty. Well, duh.

Changes in gene expression with age are typically normalised to constitutively expressed reference genes (RGs). However, RG expression may be affected by age or overall health and most studies use...

Our new systematic review/meta-analysis - led by @Stefan_H_M - shows that frailty, measured with laboratory-based frailty index tools, is associated with mortality and other adverse health outcomes, with no clear male-female difference in frailty scores!
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
The frailty index (FI) quantifies frailty as deficit accumulation. It has been adapted to employ laboratory test data (FI-Lab). Our objective was to systematically review and meta-analyse the...
