Politics is much more important than a game of parliamentary snakes and ladders. The real issue here is impoversishing hundreds of tousands of disabled people, and the real anxiety they have as the government decides to fill in its empty welfare bill.

For some politicians, slashing disability benefits is just an afternoon's political cut and thrust. For disabled people, it is the rest of their lives.

A helpful suggestion: As ministers are concerned about a hole in government finances arising from their failed attempt to cut welfare payments, perhaps they could scrap their reckless and unfunded promise to Trump to increae military spending to 5% of GDP.

It is not too late for the government to see sense on the welfare bill. Whatever the outcome of tonight's vote - and it is likely to be close - imposing swingeing cuts on ordinary people has no moral justification. So it will haunt us into the next election.

I will not be voting for the Disability Benefit Cuts Bill. It strips billions in support from the disabled and forces huge numbers into poverty. No Labour government should be proposing law like this.

Commentators complaining bitterly that Labour MPs refuse to vote for cuts. This must echo what Starmer’s advisors are saying.

Starmer and his aides contiually tell us they are aiming to win over voters with some new right-wing gimmick or another. The evidence is that this is all rapidly losing Labour votes. All to pursue their own reactionary agenda.

The welfare Bill debate is not a game of parliamentary snakes and ladders. It is about hundreds of thousands of people, who remain at risk of being pushed into proverty. Which is why the concessions cannot be enough.

Kendall says the bill is about delivering “a fairer, more compassionate system”.But it potentially slashes payments to the disabled who need help washing themselves or using the toilet. How is that compassionate?

And Starmer’s response to his cataclysmic polling is to move right on immigration.

On the rebellion over welfare, reports of its death are greatly exaggerated. Postponing cuts is not enough. Many MPs believe the cuts are wrong in principle, hurting the people we are supposed to protect. Others know how unpopular the policy will remain.

Phoney ‘concessions’ will not fundamentally improve disability benefit cuts bill. Dropping it is the only way.
