It’s my brain surgiversary! Two years ago, docs took out a tiny tumor that was making it impossible to drive, walk w/out nausea, or read. I was scared I would lose my hearing, smile, and dream of becoming an academic. But I kicked that tumor’s ass and now I’m a law professor.

Many many thanks to Robin West at @GeorgetownLaw for inviting me to present "Ruined" to her SJD/fellow colloquium series. What a great group and what great feedback from scholars from around the world!

Taught my first international environmental law class. Gave them a crash course in sources of international law. Student asked a question that ended up being about lex specialis and I totally geeked out. All around blast. 10/10. Highly recommend for IEL nerds everywhere.

Was recently asked why I'm writing about small island states at risk of disappearance due to sea-level rise given their relatively small population. It's this tweet ⬇️ A failure to see their fate as intimately connected to our own is a failure of imagination. 1/2

This Barbie is trying not to sweat it that her laptop died a month before classes & one week before the start of the new job. Thankfully, Ken has arrived and is whipping up delicious meals while we wait for the arrival of our belongings in this fabulous adventure we call life.

Lying to asylum seekers/migrants by state actors is pervasive in the US. When my students & I interviewed asylum seekers who were sent to Guatemala under Trumps' ACA, they were lied to about what they were signing, where they were going, etc.

If anyone else did this, we’d be talking about the contours of the law of human trafficking and kidnapping and not the politics of immigration. The dignity of people to not be entrapped by the state and forcibly removed is repugnant to the rule of law and should be prosecuted.

My assessment of the job market: People are SO nice. No really. Willing to help out. Willing to read your work. Willing to send a kind note of encouragement. And you meet such great people! This process is super stressful, but at least there are some genuine positives.

As a law student, I supported the ILC’s work on the Protection of persons in the event of disasters. It was one of the coolest legal things I’ve ever done. Never would I have imagined that someday I would be *cited* in an ILC document. Honored and proud.

A student told me they were intimidated to come to office hours because coming to a professor’s office was “scary.” I proceeded to point out the giant open box of cookies, pink floral pillows, and multiple pictures of my dog. thankfully they laughed and agreed - not so scary.

Here is my advice to aspiring / new academics. Find yourself some other aspiring / new academic friends. Bc sometimes you need someone who automatically understands what goes in to adding 2,700 words to an article over a period of a week while also teaching w/ @h_s_anderson 💛

Not a take on bad feedback... Mine is @bechamilton 's comments on my piece at my first JILSA. I was so nervous to share my work. Her kind reaction to my draft nearly moved me to tears and forever shifted my perception of what I was capable of accomplishing. More of this, please

Today’s episode of The Daily is WILD. If I was teaching Professional Responsibility or legal ethics, I would add this to my syllabus immediately. Even if you don’t teach those subjects, this feels like mandatory listening for all law profs.
