NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.

If you're even half interested in energy, I bet you've seen this chart. I call it The Most Hopeful Chart in the World. The point? We're embracing renewable power MUCH faster than expected. Hurrah! Only problem is, this chart has an evil twin. A chart we really need to discuss 🧵

Cheap batteries are a GAME CHANGER for GRID CONGESTION and for SOLAR and WIND We are now moving towards $60 on the cell level for LFP and $40/kWh for sodium ion. $100 for stationary systems in Chine. Using them for demand response will turn the energy system upside down. 🧵

Missed this story from last week - China's first utility-scale (10 MWh) sodium-ion battery storage plant connected to the grid in Guangxi, built by China Southern Grid. "With these batteries, storage cost can be reduced by 20% to 30%" the company said. https://t.co/W3WNTLveVI

People are consistently underestimating growth in solar and batteries. 7.9 TWh is enough to store the full daily production of over 1 TW of solar. The world will soon be able to add multiple terawatts of solar + storage every year. Demand for batteries is extremely elastic. As

Three guesses: 1 Energy transition is from fossil fuels to metal-based economy 2 Revenues from metals is tiny compared to selling fossils => No current petrostate turns into electrostate. 3 Hi Capital requirments =>Majority of extraction will take place in Global North not South

CHART OF THE DAY: The size of Germany's off-budget "special" funds is quite something -- even when considering they are multi-year endeavors. Climate crisis funds and energy subsidies account for ~50% of the off-budget funds. Full story: https://t.co/Ho4YIAZsWQ
