I heard that there is a lot of turnover at SF Planning because the planners find out that their job is partially therapist to unhappy neighbors, and this is not what they signed up for.

This is a losing line of argument. In the 50s housing cost 10-15% of a median person’s income and now it’s 25-30% for more space (and also because housing costs have gone up).
But that shows that what people want to buy with their disposable income is more space.
The average INDIVIDUAL U.S. resident now has as much living space in their home as entire families shared in the 1950s. That’s 3X as much space per person. We’ve convinced ourselves we NEED that space & the stuff we fill it with. We don’t. V/
