@a_mendelson Here's Aaron's story and one of mine. CalDOJ says the lawsuit against Nijjar was the result of a more than two year investigation into him and his businesses .

Nijjar's real estate empire has been the subject of numerous media stories over the years. In 2020, @a_mendelson published a lengthy investigation of dangerous habitability problems at his properties. A couple years later, I looked at major issues at a large complex in South LA.

@bposton Why is this happening? Yes, labor and material prices have risen. But numerous factors within the control of state and local governments — environmental and labor mandates, parking requirements, lengthy approval processes, and byzantine financing all play a major role.

Two years later, @bposton and I found seven projects in California under construction that had eclipsed $1-million per unit with another half dozen in the planning stages. I'm aware of many more above the $1-million per unit threshold today.

Back in 2020, @bposton and I reported on the most expensive low-income housing development in America, a $1.1-million per unit project in coastal San Diego that never got built because of the price tag
