No child in lowa should go hungry. That's why I am proud to introduce my first bill, which eliminates the two-tiered system differentiating between free + reduced-price meals.
I'm proud that 20 of my GOP colleagues have cosponsored this legislation with me.
The GOP just proposed new restrictions on the types of food eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits, putting even more pressure on families with children.
In addition, they would aim to keep families with more than one vehicle from receiving help. 👎
No,
@IowaGOP
, we will not be going back to the days when committed, loving same-sex couples don’t have the same right to marriage equality as everyone else.
This kind of disgusting hatred and backwards thinking has no place in Iowa. And I’ll fight it every single day.
As the son of an Muslim immigrant from the Middle East, I could not be more proud of these results.
This is proof that
@BernieSanders
is successfully building a multiracial, working-class movement to transform this nation into a more equitable and welcoming society.

After 10 months of building a diverse coalition of elected officials, community activists, and labor support, I'm officially unopposed in the race for HD 78. I'll be the first Arab American to serve in the Iowa Legislature, and one of the youngest members in our state government.
“I voted for Governor Reynolds twice and have voted Republican my entire life.
I will be voting straight Democrat next year after the Republicans forced an abortion ban on Iowans.”
— resident of Montpelier, Iowa, to me yesterday
The Governor’s plan to give public dollars to private schools is a budget-busting nightmare.
Within 4 years, this plan would cost almost a billion dollars.
While not every race went the way we hoped it would tonight, I am incredibly proud to be heading to the Iowa State House. When I get there, I'll be one of Iowa's youngest legislators and one of only a handful of Arab-Americans to serve in elected office, nationwide.
The governor’s voucher scheme is bad for public schools, and especially harms rural communities. I’ll stand in strong opposition to this bill when it comes up for debate Monday.
I was happy to help welcome
@SecretaryPete
back to Cedar Rapids to highlight the Biden-Harris administration’s historic investment in infrastructure right here at

Last night, my good friend David Maier made history — being elected the first LGBTQ+ person to serve on the Cedar Rapids City Council.
I’m excited to see David bring a fresh perspective to our City government.
This isn’t hard, folks. A woman’s reproductive + medical care during pregnancy is none of my business — nor is it the business of Ken Paxton, Kim Reynolds, or any Supreme Court.
*in spite of the
@IowaGOP
’s continued attacks on LGBTQ Iowans*
over 6,000 Cedar Rapidians showed up to the 2023 CR Pride Parade today to stand in solidarity with gay + trans Iowans!!
Tomorrow, Republican lawmakers will gather here to do something unprecedented in our state’s history: strip away fundamental freedoms enjoyed by Iowans.
61% of Iowans support reproductive freedom. The Governor + her extremist allies do not care because they do not serve you.
Incredible work by Bernie 2020 intern,
@momoshakibnia
, getting 25 commit to caucus cards after Friday prayer!
@BernieSanders
is the only candidate who will stand up for immigrant rights — he is actively working to build a more welcoming and inclusive society here at home
Today, I met these brave students from Des Moines East High who came to the Capitol to protest anti-LGBTQ bills moving through the legislature.
The youth of this state never fail to amaze me with their kindness and courage in the face of increasing attacks from their government.
Homelessness in Iowa is up 23%.
300,000 Iowans face food insecurity.
As the Governor celebrates an artificial $2 billion surplus from the federal government, she ignores the very real pain Iowans are feeling.
Kim Reynolds’ leadership is a disaster for working Iowans.
Incredible turnout at the

climate rally in Iowa City!
Here is a group of prominent Arab/Muslim community activists who had the chance to speak with

It was great having
@DeidreDeJear
speak with community organizers + labor leaders here in Cedar Rapids today!
She is going to be an incredible Governor for our state.
Don’t think this tweet hits quite the way she hoped…
Rep. Hinson proudly voted against providing $6 million to Cedar Rapids to help restore the tree cover lost in the 2020 derecho (not to mention millions more invested across northeast Iowa).
Workplace law changes would make for lost, dangerous Iowa childhoods, Council Bluffs labor leaders, parents, say
"The bill is about billion-dollar corporations pressuring our Legislature to allow them to exploit our children," says
@Jen4IALabor
Governor Reynolds wants to:
❌ Ban teaching 7th-12th graders about AIDS & HPV
❌ Ban surveys relating to mental, emotional, or physical health
❌ Ban any nicknames or pronouns that are different from a student’s birth certificate
This plan is dangerous.
Kim Reynolds is not a unifier. She’s intent on dividing Iowans along ideological lines, punching down on anyone who dares to question her.
This Governor has failed to lead.
Republican lawmakers just passed legislation to allow weapons on public schools + college campuses.
The bill exempts private businesses + schools—meaning Iowa’s wealthiest residents are protected while public school students, faculty members and employees are not.
Just left a hearing in which proponents of SF494 called working class Iowans lazy, refused to acknowledge that SNAP dollars come entirely from federal funds, and gleefully asked the state to kick people off programs that feed their families.
Disgusting.
Iowa’s
#LGBTQ
kids deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Republicans are trying to pass bills that would out gay and trans kids as well as Iowa’s own version of “Don’t Say Gay.”
Tell them NO:
Make no mistake — the goal of the
@IowaGOP
is to ban abortion in Iowa with no exceptions for rape or incest.
This decision strips working-class women of care they need in crisis. It’s shameful.
Had a great conversation with Admiral Franken last night in Cedar Rapids. We discussed global affairs and our vision for Iowa’s future.
He will be a great statesman for Iowans in the United States Senate. I’m proud to be supporting him in the Democratic primary this Tuesday.
Rebuilding our state after a decade of neglect under Kim Reynolds and Iowa Republicans can’t be done without everyone doing their part.
I’m ready to keep doing mine—and I hope you’ll join me.
New from
@Rushthewriter
: Gov. Kim Reynolds told reporters her "heart breaks" for Iowa's trans kids the day before she signed two bills that specifically discriminate against them.
Several of my colleagues +
@IAGovernor
Kim Reynolds attended a forum sponsored by the anti-LGBTQ hate group “Moms for Liberty” last week.
These disgusting attacks on
#LGBTQ
kids only serve to foment further violence, bullying, and suicides.
Our kids shouldn’t have to decide between:
1) being hungry at school
2) having debt
I’ve introduced bipartisan legislation to make sure that Iowa kids never have to make this choice.
For all of
@KimReynoldsIA
’s talk of Iowa’s prosperity, our state is breaking its most important promise to its residents most in need.
I’ll be introducing legislation in the new session to address this, and will work with anyone to get it passed.
Auditor Sand is correct—any state employee who exhibits a pattern of discrimination + continued liability to taxpayers should not continue to be employed.
Gary Barta should resign.
Just a few short years ago, we couldn’t have imagined the lengths the Left would go: Indoctrinate our children, mandate vaccines, and shut down the economy!
We must take back our country!
That process starts here in Iowa and it starts with all of us!
I am always impressed by the
#LGBTQ
community’s resilience and ability to join together in the face of adversity.
I was glad to join the rally for equality this morning in Cedar Rapids.
“Drag shows for young kids, pornographic books in school libraries, elementary school lessons on pronouns and, sadly, the list goes on," Reynolds said.
Our governor is now openly rooting against our public schools - which 95% of Iowa kids attend.
Legalized cannabis would be good for Iowa’s economy, good for public health, and would help make our system of justice more equitable.
This is just one issue where Republican and Democratic voters agree—I’ll work with any Republican or Democrat to legalize it. 🍃💨
In a few short weeks, I’ll be sworn in as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives.
My story is Iowa’s story—I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities this state and country we love have given me.
I will always endeavor to make you proud.
I stand in solidarity with all of my 10,000
@UAW
brothers and sisters in Waterloo, Ottumwa, Dubuque, Davenport, and elsewhere as they strike to fight for the wages and benefits that they deserve.
Today I’m announcing my candidacy for Iowa State Senate. I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids and I’m excited to continue in the progressive footsteps of Senator Rob Hogg.
Join me in this journey -

Honored to welcome Secretary Tom Vilsack back home to Iowa!!
Thank you, Mr. Secretary, for announcing the $6 million federal investment to replant trees across Cedar Rapids 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just finished our judiciary committee meeting where Republicans voted to advance their bathroom bill that will further attack + marginalize transgender students.
This hateful legislation has no place in Iowa.
Over a dozen Arab/Muslim community leaders and activists in Iowa have endorsed

because they know that he will stand up for immigrant communities
Bernie is building a multiracial working-class movement to transform this nation and improve the lives of all Americans

Had the privilege of meeting the Varnums today at CR Pride Fest!
In 2009, they successfully lobbied the Iowa Supreme Court to recognize their marriage. Their advocacy helped make Iowa the 3rd state to legalize gay marriage.
Iowans proudly welcome refugees; we don't turn them away.
Maybe a twice-impeached reality TV guy out on bail in 4 jurisdictions with 91 felony indictments shouldn't comment on who's "welcome" in this country.
Instead of endorsing him, Iowa leaders should give Trump the Bird.
From the beginning, Iowans have known that vouchers do not make private schools more accessible.
They simply enrich wealthy institutions and defund public schools.
“People would move to Iowa because we had the best public schools,” Scheetz said. “That was because we fully invested in our public education system. We respected educators, we empowered educators.”
For years,
@lanon_baccam
has been a great friend + mentor. Like me, he’s the son of immigrants. He’s a veteran, a dedicated public servant, and a son of rural Iowa.
I’m thrilled to support him in his run for congress in
#IA03
to beat anti-abortion extremist Zach Nunn!
Proud of my friends and constituents in House District 78 who showed up to demonstrate against former Vice President Pence’s hateful rhetoric today in Cedar Rapids 👏🏻
Republicans in the Iowa House are staunch defenders of “parental choice”—except when it comes to deciding what to feed your family.
Check out my interview in Time magazine:
“Scheetz, who is all but guaranteed to be elected to the Iowa House from the solidly Democratic district, would become one of about 25 current state legislators across the country of Arab American descent.”
I’m in the room for the education committee hearing on the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Rep. Sue Cahill is speaking against it now.
Another culture war solution in search of a problem—means only to attack LGBTQ+ kids, educators, and families.
Iowa risks falling behind other states economically if we don’t become a place that is more hospitable to workers, not just large corporations.
Raising the minimum wage to at least $15 would benefit nearly half a million Iowa workers.
It’s time to do the right thing.
The governor’s “state government reorganization” is nothing more than a partisan power grab—I voted no because no governor, Republican or Democrat, should be able to have such extreme power over our state government.
The Republican abortion ban isn’t pro-life.
Instead of pursuing truly pro-life legislation, the
@IowaGOP
earlier this year stripped food assistance from children and the elderly.
This morning, I was sworn in as the Representative for Iowa House District 78.
It was an honor to have family and friends in attendance, especially my mom, dad and brother.
Time to get to work!
Yesterday, Gov
@KimReynoldsIA
signed a bill that will:
1) kick thousands of children/elderly/disabled Iowans off their food benefits + health care
2) spend millions of taxpayer dollars to hire 200 new state bureaucrats
The
@IowaGOP
doesn’t give a damn about working people.
Republicans in the Legislature passed SF494 — a bill that will:
1) take food away from 8,000 disabled/elderly/children
2) kick 600 kids off their health care
Please join me in calling on Governor Kim Reynolds to veto the GOP's terrible bill
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
Senator
@ChuckGrassley
failed to uphold our state’s values when he betrayed Afghan refugees—many of whom have found their homes right here in Cedar Rapids.
This callous disregard for human dignity is just more evidence of the
@IowaGOP
’s shameful disdain for people in need.
The anti-LGBTQ bills moving through the Iowa legislature are not only mean-spirited + divisive—they're hurting our cities’ ability to attract new business and workers to our state.
Leaving people alone to live their lives in peace costs nothing and benefits our state immensely.
My bill to provide free school meals for low-income Iowa families with 20 Republican cosponsors is sitting idle in the legislature.
Iowans need relief from food insecurity, and I’ll work with anyone to deliver for them.
Turning down money for investments from the federal government does nothing to cut federal funds—it just ensures Iowans get less of their hard-earned dollars returned to our state. Embarrassing.
Breaking: Abortion remains LEGAL in Iowa as Iowa Supreme Court splits 3-3 on
@IAGovernor
's effort to reinstate 2018 abortion ban.
The split ruling leaves the lower court decision in effect under operation of law. So 2018 ban is still enjoined:
