Bumping this great exchange. How about in a 28-team format, with only 1 at-large?. In a Sept AC that has near zero impact on UW's CFP odds, would they consider sitting guys?. This format renders the Apple Cup important to WSU's season, but immaterial to UW's. @dannyoneil.
@PDawg206 @dannyoneil Fair point, and I don’t think any of this is perfect. Though as long as there is even a single at-large spot, don’t think a school like UW could ever afford to rest anybody in September.

Would not meaningfully contribute to Michigan State's CFP odds in the Big Ten's format, especially at 24 or 28. ND to get 1 of2 at-large spots regardless.
This got to be one of the ballsiest calls in college football history.

Washington #45.
Realized I never posted the full pre-season power rating, so here it is. Boise State is the highest rated GO5, Purdue is the lowest rated P4. Vandy is not last in the SEC, TCU is highest in Big 12. I expect to have one more update before the season, ending in a pre-season v3.

My CFP pref list. 5+11 (SEC @ 9).5+7 (SEC @ 8).5+11 (SEC @ 8).24 (6-6-4-4-2-2).28 (7-7-5-5-2-2).4-4-2-2-1-3.4-4-2-2-1-1. For 24/28, I love the creativity & spirit behind non-con in round 1. But it's still abhorrant on non-con. 1 non-ND spot out of 24/28 is Cactus League stuff.

The best way to think about a CFP of 24 or 28 teams _ still just an idea _ is as an extension of the 16-team, 4-4-2-2-1, but instead of confs staging play-in games to get in the CFP on champ wknd, play-in matchups are across confs. and become the 1st rd.

We said this in 4 > 12, and were accused of hyperbole. But at 24? Why'd we care about a regular season Ohio State game ever again. (1) they'll make it every year. (2) anybody good enough to beat them likely makes it anyway, win or lose. 💤 A yawn fest until December. 💤.

There are 44 P4 vs P4 non-con matchups this year. Many with beautifully tight spreads. September is going to be awesome, and I will enjoy it more b/c these games will contribute meaningfully to the CFP race. We can't lose that, we can't make these spring training.
💪💪❤️❤️💯💯. Excellent point. Interconference play-ins would improve AQ-heavy proposals. It gets us closer to meritocracy. But I still hate what it does to non-con. That's the biggest weakness with any AQ-heavy model. The hyper-segmentation of the season.

Beyond stupid. Compared to 4-4-2-2-1 . ❌ worse on disrespecting non-con . effectively shortens season by 30%. ❌ worse on disrespecting regular season . puts 2's / 3's in position to lose to 6's / 7's, and be out for real. ❌ quotas less reflective of league quality.
Yes, the Big Ten is socializing 24 & 28-team playoff models - a "7-7-5-5-2-2" format - that would likely eliminate conference title games. But. the concept is in its infancy and is "barely baked," as one source says. Don't expect anything soon. Details:
