When I’m kindly referred to as “seasoned commentator” I feel every ache of my old age. Very kind of ABC Big Ideas to broadcast the recent LaTrobe Asia panel with @becstratin, @NickBisley, @theidlethinker and Lupita Wijaya. https://t.co/ENolmd8u8W

And the Kure Curry!
If ever think of a Japan trip, besides touristy spots like Tokyo or Hokkaido, I strongly recommend you - if only you're a naval enthusiast - to drop by Kure. There, you get to visit the JMSDF museum (with the land submarine) and battleship Yamato museum across the street. 👍🏽👇🏽

This should be excellent, looking forward to it!
Very pleased to announce that my new @IISS_org Adelphi book on Japan is nearly with us. The tome considers whether Japan’s new grand strategy, defence reforms & more are up to the strategic task that Japan has set itself against the background of increasing tensions around

Looking forward to this discussion, particularly the risks of hubris as ALP will be tempted to misread the election result!

Australian election result is NOT a model for centre-left renaissance. Labor got just over 1/3 of the primary vote but a stonking majority because of the pecularity of our preferential voting system. Size of ALP majority does not reflect broad support

A landslide for the center-left could inspire social democratic parties worldwide.

Now might be a good time to read BAD COP, my Quarterly Essay about Peter Dutton. And if you want a sample, Paul Murray performed a dramatic reading from the essay on Sky After Dark

A tour de force by @GregoryVRaymond. While China provides authoritarian cover, it’s the anti-democratic govts of Southeast Asia, who are actively collaborating, facilitating cross border repression. Transnational criminals stabilize authoritarian politics.

Would be madness if... So you can bank on it!
Trump contemplating deep cuts to State + closing 30 missions including "several" Pacific embassies. No final decision, Rubio might defend turf, Congress might ignore. Would be madness to shutter embassies *just opened* in Honiara, Nuku'alofa, Port Vila etc

My preview of Xi Jinping’s travel in Southeast Asia this week. With massive tariffs on SEA still threatened, the timing is perfect to position China as the responsible and responsive partner. But tangible new initiatives may be lacking.

the hubris on these people...
WH aide Stephen Miran outlines 5 potential responses foreign nations can undertake in response to problems he says are caused by US dollar dominance: 1. Foreign countries can accept tariffs w/o retaliation, giving US revenue; 2. They can stop unfair/harmful trading practices

My latest, in @ForeignAffairs, argues the US needs to get serious about building military power in the Indian Ocean, alongside its Quad partners. (1/4) https://t.co/unoQpywENG

The Quad was a good start, but China’s growing influence demands more security cooperation.
