Why is the issue of effective reading instruction often framed as a conservative political agenda?? Itโs not. Nothing could be more โprogressiveโ than ensuring all children learn to read. As a left leaning advocate, itโs incredibly frustrating!!
A recent

instruction and conservative politics.
We've been here before--and we don't want to go there again.

I am amazed that the
#scienceofreading
is trending currently. Iโm hopeful it doesnโt reflect a watering down/simplification of it all. To make it clear, we are not talking about a fad or ideology.
Itโs a commitment to using quality scientific research to inform reading teaching.
In our article today, we argue that one of the best ways to meet childrenโs wellbeing is to remain focussed on ensuring all children learn to read, write, do maths, and gain the other capacities they need to succeed in life.
It was an honour to receive the Mona Tobias award for service to the educational community from

Well this is exciting... but my mind immediately goes to whether Calkins is looking to cash in on this shift towards decoding. Lots of quality programs already available, and which donโt have a legacy of three cueing and whole language.

Fascinating study into what happens in the brain when taught using phonics or whole word memorisation. Spoiler: Phonics allows readers to generalise to many more patterns and words!! And whole word activates less productive pathways!!
