HAPPY BIRTHDAY NAN! I just wrote my grandma a 100th birthday card. We're now eagerly awaiting her telegram from her majesty. I think this is our family's first centenarian!
Despite the lacklustre London fireworks, Happy New Year Naked Scientists supporters! Here's some better ones to welcome you to 2022. We're looking forward to some magical scientific moments in the year ahead.
@NakedScientists
my friend Belinda made this at Christmas, she’s my husband’s senior medical photographer at Morriston hospital. They were all cheesed off at the virus...so they ate it!
I did suggest to the production team on
@SaturdayKitchen
that it would be awesome to do this. There's a lot of cool science in cooking and wine 🙂. Perhaps they were scared off by the prospect of a public health professor in the kitchen! Would be a brilliant programme though!
#bbcqt
Again, no virologist on the programme to actually provide clear information about Covid. Instead, politicians, statisticians and misguided speculations...
Visiting Chris
@NakedScientists
today after a kind invitation from him to join a family party. I got to arrange the flowers for the tables 😊 Great to catch up in person
Naked Astronomy is back! Handling the hard topics in space science and cosmology, Ben McAllister and Adam Murphy invite the biggest brains to join them for an in-depth chat about space science. Kicking us off,
@AstroKatie
ponders the fate of the Universe
I'm grabbing a strong coffee to get my cognitive gears turning ready to solve Cambridgeshire's burning scientific conundra... All questions welcome (within reason)!

@BBCBreakfast
What I said was "the risk of importing variants that can surmount or bypass the protection conferred by our vaccines." This is a reference to the future and what we need to watch out for. I didn't say anything about existing variants. Please don't misquote me.
Everyone, I'm sorry. I was trying to explain to a follower the fact that we need to find out why some ethnic groups are apparently more susceptible to covid. I did not know that I was misusing the word "race" and that it could cause offense. Again, my apologies.
Looking forward to
@BBCBreakfast
news tomorrow morning. Will
@NakedScientists
Dr Chris Smith be able to raise his plant/ cactus /succulent game verses
@LindaBauld
...... I'm thinking of a creeper plant climbing the back wall, maybe obscuring the digital clock?
@sheep_woolly
Err... no! Yesterday 1.8 MILLION tests were done, up 18% on last week. Look more, you find more! Please don't make sweeping, inaccurate generalisations. Cases are really not relevant. The consequences of those cases are what matter, and that's what we need to focus on.
I think Dr Chris Smith
@NakedScientists
and Professor Linda Bauld
@LindaBauld
should absolutely be invited to be on
@SaturdayKitchen
!
They would be brilliant guests and would be a way to thank them for joining
@BBCBreakfast
on Saturday mornings throughout the pandemic.
🚨 JOB OPPORTUNITY! 🚨
We're looking for an enthusiastic, organised and creative person to join the team. If you're eager to work in

@BBCBreakfast
So we said the vaccines are working really well, and we have converted a lethal infection for some into a trivial infection for the majority. Where's the doom in that. There's every reason to be optimistic!
Found a box marked "BBC Micro" while clearing up. From 35y ago, the original Elite, in perfect condition and complete with novella and function key guide, AND the edition of The Micro User with the code for Elite Cheat. Brings back some memories.
@DavidBraben
you must be proud!
This week we've heard about a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in India.
Professor Linda Bauld and Dr Chris Smith are on
#BBCBreakfast
tomorrow morning to talk about this and answer more of your Covid questions.
Send them in below ⬇️
Sorry that I'm coming to this late: I'm doing a lot of clinical work supporting Covid19. I apologise for upsetting people. I did not read properly the petition sent to me about population. Lesson learned. My fault, not our lovely team or the programme. Sincere apologies. Chris.
I haven't heard from
@NadineDorries
yet, but the offer, Nadine, is a genuine one and I'd be delighted to explain your error and what herd immunity actually is. Accurate communication of science has never been more important than now. Do please drop me a line.
Sadly she doesn’t care about being right or wrong, as long as she’s playing to her Far Right Fanbase,
But
@NadineDorries
, I suggest you take the Dr up on his offer and educate yourself, be better, it’s not too late, even for you
"In space no one can hear you scream" goes the tagline. We're going to test that.
We're sending a helium balloon to edge of space - to play *your* screams, and record them again on a separate microphone.
Send us your screams! Email a recording to chris

Good to clear up misinformation and misleading potentially libellous communications, which are easily proliferated on social media yet do enormous harm when people spread them without fact checking or careful judgement.
Chris
@NakedScientists
& I will be back on
@BBCBreakfast
tomorrow at the slightly later time of around 09:30 for a quick update. Also looking ahead to what's next - do join us if you can.
Tonight we're undressing the science behind the coronavirus pandemic that’s sweeping the globe. How does it affect the lungs? What can doctors do about it? And we talk to the teams developing new rapid tests for the virus, and vaccines to stop it.
Tune in at 6pm!
Join us if you can. Appreciate everyone is totally fed up, but there are still a lot of research developments & questions we'll try our best to answer. 09:10/15 tomorrow.
Tonight: the Electric Vehicle revolution is just around the corner, we're told. But are we ready for the revolution? This week we're dissecting the pros and cons of electric cars, and asking Red Dwarf's Robert Llewellyn for his opinion - join us online at
📢JOB ALERT! Are you a radio or podcast presenter or producer, or would you like to be? We're hiring and we'd love to hear from you if you're interested in joining our team to make science radio programmes and podcasts. Details are here:
Just got one of the most off target PR pitches I've seen in a long time. Usual format "Love your podcast <cite latest episode> I have a guest who would be a perfect fit for the show. Showing off her 34KK bust, she is a curvaceous model, influencer, CEO..." Hmm. Shall we book her?
@NadineDorries
Hello Nadine. This is Dr Chris Smith, virologist. What you wrote above is totally wrong. If you would like me to help you by explaining what herd immunity actually is, how it works and what it does and does not do, please drop me a line.
There are 100+ vaccine projects around the world pursuing more than 10 different vaccine approaches. The odds are good we'll get on, but not a given, and probably not sooner than 12 months yet. I am skeptical that effective social distancing can be maintained for that long...
@NakedScientists
How likely is it that a vaccine will be found? And if one can't be produced can we really maintain social distancing measures indefinitely?
@rachelburden
This is the legacy of transmissions during the pre-lockdown period. In the next week or so, we should see these numbers begin to drop as the effects of social distancing breaking the chain of transmission begin to kick in, I hope...
