“Brass Monkeys” (freezing cold). "It is cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey" comes from the practice of putting iron cannon balls on a dimpled brass plate on the deck of a war-ship. When very cold the brass contracted sufficiently to cause the iron balls to fall out.

“Sun’s over the yardarm” (time for a drink). The phrase originated in the North Atlantic, where the sun would rise above the foreyard of a square-rigged ship at 11 AM. This was the time when officers would have their first drink, and sailors would be issued with their rum ration.
