This morning, a
#Sikh
worshipper on his way to the Gurdwara was brutally attacked in my district. This violence is horrific & needs to end. We stand with our Sikh community, our neighbors. We must come together to root out the hate that leaves too many communities feeling unsafe.
My
@NYCCouncil
colleagues and I have demanded
@NYCMayor
and
@DOEChancellor
restore individual school budgets with $700+ million in unspent federal stimulus funds before decisions must be made for the upcoming school year.
Today is a historic day for New York City. After much discussion and collaboration with my colleagues, I am honored to have received the necessary votes to become the next Speaker of the New York City Council.
To achieve public safety, we must provide economic opportunities for New Yorkers who are pursuing them, not criminalize or push them into the justice system. Street vendors like Maria deserve to work with dignity and respect.
Horrific treatment of Maria, a mother, immigrant entrepreneur & her *daughter* who filmed
Earlier this week, Maria was arrested for selling mangoes & kiwis to customers she's served for 10+ yrs
Shame on our city for choosing cruelty, instead of supporting hardworking mothers
The alarming rise in xenophobic and hostile sentiments being directed at asylum seekers does nothing to address our city's challenges.
New York is a city of immigrants, and we are always stronger when we stand together united.
A new class of
@NYCCouncil
members takes office today. The work ahead will be challenging, but the great reward is in serving our constituents. I am filled with confidence that we will do great things for this City. Now, let's get to work!
To improve living conditions + the sustainability of public housing, I am proposing a program to move
@NYCHA
residents into new public housing within a new, adjacent building to create additional housing units to address the citywide crisis.
#PeopleOverEverything
HISTORY: NYC's Summer Youth Employment Program & other city programs will provide 100K summer jobs for youth ages 14–24!
This investment is critical to our goal of shaping strong and safer communities. I'm so proud to partner with
@NYCMayor
and my colleagues to make it happen.
The remarks at today’s hearings are inappropriate and unacceptable in Council Chambers and everywhere. There is never an excuse for such harmful language, and we must not be divided by believing justice comes from inflicting harm onto others.
To be clear: this is sexual assault, and it's disgusting.
There is no place in our city or anywhere for this violence, yet we know women are subjected to this every day. We all deserve to be safe.
Standing in solidarity with my colleague,
@innavernikov
.
I'm very saddened and concerned about the reports of NYPD officers being shot.
New Yorkers + all those who love our city: please keep them, their families, the entire NYPD, and the Harlem neighborhood where this senseless violence occurred in your hearts.
Throughout the pandemic, New Yorkers depended on delivery workers to provide them with essential needs. That's why
@nyccouncil
passed legislation to ensure
#Deliveristas
earn fair wages & receive basic protections. Proud to stand in solidarity w/
@workersjusticep
@DesisRisingUp
!
Black history is NYC history☝🏾
I'm proud to observe this
#BlackHistoryMonth
as the
@NYCCouncil
's first Black Speaker, where we've already made so much history this year.
May we remember our past—victories, struggles, and everything in between—to forge a better future together.
Rikers is no longer serving our city. Advancing the closure of Rikers is more urgent now than ever before—for both public safety and human rights.
#PeopleOverEverything
I am honored to stand with
@SenSchumer
, my Council colleagues, and advocates in support of the Women's Health Protection Act. We need the U.S. Senate to pass this vital legislation to protect abortion access for all, no matter where they live.
Let's do it!

@NYCCouncil
’s Economic and Tax Revenue Forecast projects a period of slower growth in the coming years that we must confront, and more tax revenue than
@NYCBudget
has estimated.
The Council released its Economic and Tax Revenue Forecast for the FY 2024 November Plan. While our economy is resilient, the Council projects the City will enter a period of slower growth in the next 2 years, with lower tax revenue expected this year.
Growing up, I saw firsthand the power of organized labor. This is why our city’s unions have my undying support. Today, I joined
@CentralLaborNYC
’s annual NYC Labor Day Parade to march with our city’s organized labor groups. Today and every day, we honor the labor movement.
Today at noon, the
@NYCCouncil
will convene for our Charter Meeting. Our diverse body, which will have a majority of women serving for the first time, will elect its first African American Speaker.
Tune in➡️
Love always wins. With
@SenSchumer
and
@SenateDems
back at the helm of the U.S. Senate, I’m confident the Respect for Marriage Act will become law. You can count on
@NYCCouncil
’s support every step of the way.
The DOE continues to avoid transparency and accountability for its removal of funds from school budgets that do not reflect the city budget.
@NYCMayor
and
@DOEChancellor
need to stop this charade that harms our students and restore the funds they have taken away from schools.
O’Shae Sibley should be alive.
No one should have to live in fear of violent attacks for merely being themselves. My heart goes out to his family, friends and our LGBTQIA+ communities still reeling from this senseless act of hatred tonight.
Grateful to our federal partners, including
@SenSchumer
&
@RepJeffries
, for helping NYC secure $104.6 million in this latest round of FEMA funding to support asylum seekers. We’ll keep working together to advance the City’s priorities.
My full statement:
I’m standing with my colleagues in the Bronx tonight to support all of the families and neighbors impacted by today’s tragic fire. City agencies are coordinating to ensure their needs are met, including a place to stay.
A 9% rent increase while New Yorkers are facing unprecedented economic challenges is unconscionable. The Rent Guidelines Board must re-consider this harm and support actions to safeguard the well-being of New York’s rent-stabilized tenants.
Congratulations to my First Deputy Chief of Staff
@faiza_n_ali
for being recognized on
@CrainsNewYork
's "40 Under 40" list! There is no one more qualified to help lead a
@NYCCouncil
staff that reflects the diversity of our city.
I'm horrified to learn of the fatal attack on this young woman in her home early today in Chinatown. My condolences go out to her family and friends, and my heart is with her Chinatown community.
It was wonderful to meet with
@chrisquinn
and
@agmiller92
this morning and hear about their experiences as Speaker. Leadership begins with listening. I valued the unique perspective of what being
@NYCCouncil
Speaker entails.
I’m praying for those held hostage at
#CongregationBethIsrael
in TX, that they will see a safe and swift end to this incident.
Out of an abundance of caution,
@NYPDnews
is monitoring synagogues throughout NYC.
We cannot and will not tolerate
#antisemitism
—here or anywhere.
We thank Justice Breyer for his decades of service to our country.
Now feels like a perfect time to put a Black woman on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Evictions in NYC have risen to an alarming levels with inaction by
@NYCMayor
’s Administration. That’s why
@NYCCouncil
passed bills with a veto-proof majority to help keep New Yorkers in their homes.
Vetoing these bills only contributes to this crisis.
As we mourn the loss of our sister Michelle Alyssa Go, we gather to remember how she lived: with kindness and generosity.
What a legacy for us to carry forth. We are committed to the work that was so close to her heart, ensuring help for those in need so we can all thrive.
@ericadamsfornyc
I want to thank Mayor-elect Adams for his well-wishes as I prepare to take on the role of Speaker in the New York City Council. I know we will form a productive partnership to keep New Yorkers safe and turn our city around at this pivotal moment.
Research on solitary confinement is clear: it’s a harmful practice that undermines the health of those subjected to it and the safety of us all.
@NYCCouncil
will hold hearing on legislation to ban solitary confinement and I support passing a law to restrict the practice.
In an op-ed for
@NYDailyNews
,
@DanGarodnick
of
@NYCPlanning
and I explain why Albany must repeal the outdated 1961 FAR cap that hinders our ability to develop more affordable and mixed-income housing in New York City’s most central areas.
I am disturbed and saddened to see such anti-Black hatred on display in our city, especially targeted at a child. NYC is great because of its diverse communities, and no one should have to fear racist attacks on public transit. My heart goes out to this young man and his family.
Thank you Rev. Dr. Charles Curtis and the Baptist Ministers Conference of Greater New York and Vicinity for welcoming me to your
#MLKDay
service. While we take stock of the progress we have achieved, we must be clear about the battles ahead in our march toward justice & equality.
As a life member of
@NationalAction
, I am grateful for the mentorship of
@TheRevAl
, who has brought us together on
#MLKDay
and has facilitated strong leadership across this country. I won’t forget the sacred ground on which I stand.
The law is clear: the City must close Rikers Island by 2027. This afternoon, I joined elected officials and advocates to insist that the path forward must be an aggressive one to fulfill this obligation and make our city safer. This is the only plan that the Council will pursue.
.
@DragStoryHour

Proud to join
@NewYorkStateAG

@NYCCouncil
colleagues at

I have tested positive for COVID-19. As cases rise again in NYC, I encourage all New Yorkers to take precautions and please get vaccinated/boosted.
See here for full statement:
As a mother and grandmother, my heart aches for Tyre Nichols's entire family as they mourn. Tyre should be alive, and the violent acts by these five Memphis officers are deplorable and demand accountability.
Yesterday, I expressed my concern with the NYPD’s pattern of exceeding its budget on overtime—costing the city hundreds of millions of dollars.
NYC's fiscal health depends on responsible budgeting, and we must deliver an accurate budget that reflects the needs of New Yorkers.
Cutting essential services and agencies that New Yorkers rely upon everyday to succeed is the wrong path forward and budget vision for our city.
We have the funds to reverse course and the Council will continue pushing for a budget that does so.
Anti-Asian hate cannot be the response to anti-Black racism, ever. Our shared experience of lacking safety from racism + violence should unite us. Respect is essential for constructive public policy dialogues—let’s demand it from one another with accountability and healing.
.
@MaraGay
is right–we should invest more in public pools, swimming education, and water safety measures across the U.S.
Increasing access to public pools and swimming lessons were part of my State of the City address, and
@NYCCouncil
is prioritizing solutions. More must be done.
spent months reporting on families across America who have lost children to drowning.
What I found is that in America, swimming is a luxury rather than a public good.
NYC is grateful to have
@SenSchumer
’s steadfast leadership in Washington.
@NYCCouncil
leaders met with Majority Leader Schumer today for a productive discussion about the challenges facing our city, and the creative solutions we can pursue together.
I’m utterly heartbroken by the passing of my friend and former
@NYCCouncil
colleague
@PaValloneNYC
.
Paul was a kind, beloved, and dedicated public servant who left an indelible mark on Queens and NYC.
My prayers are with his wife, children, and the entire Vallone family.
Our beautiful and vibrant Sikh community is key to New York City’s diversity and greatness. Alongside
@NYCMayor
and
@JeniferRajkumar
, I was proud to return to the Sikh Cultural Center for the first time as Speaker of
@nyccouncil
.
Today, I marched with New Yorkers from across the city to celebrate the diversity of Irish communities here in New York City at the St. Pats for All Parade in Queens!
On this day, the world mourns the loss of Nobel Peace Prize winning Archbishop Desmond Tutu. His perpetual fight to end the oppression of apartheid in South Africa and righteous struggle for freedom will never be forgotten. Rest in power Baba Tutu.
NYC has become an increasingly unaffordable city, and this useful new tool from
@NYCPlanning
shows why: the inequities in the addition and loss of housing by local area.
Thanks to an anonymous donation,
@GrowNYC
’s compost collection operations will continue through FY24 and save 65 jobs.
We're relieved, but philanthropy shouldn't supplant funding for city programs.

Hollis, Queens was represented today at
@RockTheBells
as the
@NYCCouncil
celebrated a true Queens legend, the one and only
@llcoolj
! It was an honor to present him with a proclamation acknowledging his undeniable impact on hip-hop and popular culture.
Attacks and threats against
@ManhattanDA
and the professional public servants on his staff—who work for a safer and more just NYC—are unacceptable. These attacks represent politics at its worst. Accountability under the law must be the same regardless of your last name or wealth.
Converting vacant hotels into affordable housing is one solution to addressing the needs of our city’s housing crisis by allowing us to
#ExpandHealth
for New Yorkers. That's why I’ve joined
@NYCMayor
to demand state lawmakers pass this legislation.
Equity is one of my top priorities, and nowhere is this more of an issue than in the pay gap. This
#EqualPayDay

@NYCCouncil
is continuing the fight for pay equity!
I was honored to be re-elected Speaker of
@NYCCouncil
during today’s Charter Meeting.
As we begin a new legislative session, the Council will continue to confront the challenges facing our city and prioritize the health and safety of every New Yorker.
The convoluted process necessary to get an apartment through CityFHEPS requires hours of time, and if you make a mistake, you often start over. The Council will propose policy changes that aim to simplify the process for New Yorkers to access CityFHEPS.
#MovingForwardTogether
Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. As we witnessed during the confirmation hearings, Justice Jackson will bring depth & breadth of legal experience to strengthen the Court. Congratulations, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson!
#BlackWomenLead
Today we gathered to mourn and stand in solidarity with NYPD and the loved ones of Detective Wilbert Mora, a true public servant who saved lives even after death through organ donation.
May we come together in his memory to bring the violence hurting our communities to an end.
Growing up in Hollis, I never thought I'd stand before my Queens colleagues today as the first African American Speaker of the
@NYCCouncil
. It's an immense honor, and I don't take it lightly.
TY
@QueensDAKatz
for having me tonight as we continue celebrating

@stpatsforall
represents inclusion, community, and celebration of Irish culture and heritage. I’m so happy that St. Pats for All is back in person so that the largest contingent of
@NYCCouncil
Members can participate, march, and celebrate. Happy St. Pats for All!
The morning after a bigot set fire to the pride flag outside Little Prince restaurant in SoHo, we raised a new flag.
Our community will not be intimidated.
Anti-Semitism continues to rear its ugly head throughout our city, and we must always condemn it.
I will work with my
@NYCCouncil
colleagues and all stakeholders to ensure safety from hate in Jewish neighborhoods and all communities. Hate has no place in our city.
I am angry & heartbroken by two more anti-Semitic, violent incidents in our community over Shabbos.
A man was violently struck upside the head in Bed Stuy by Marcy & Myrtle. Swastikas & other graffiti were spray painted on yeshiva school bus in Williamsburg by Division & Rodney.
Shocked to learn about the passing of Elise Finch. A member of
@akasorority1908
, Elise served as CBS’ meteorologist for over a decade and graced thousands of households with her genius. She will truly be missed. My prayers go to her family and friends.
Today, we welcomed non-profit leaders to City Hall for a roundtable discussion on issues facing the sector and how
@NYCCouncil
can best support their important work of delivering crucial services for New Yorkers.
Solitary confinement has been proven to cause physical and psychological harm. We can’t allow the human rights crisis on Rikers to continue with failed policies.
The Council stands by our bill to ban solitary confinement.
My statement with
@CMSandyNurse

In an op-ed for
@amNewYork
, I reflect on how
@CUNY
opened many doors for me and why we must ensure the city budget includes adequate investments so that New Yorkers can benefit from the economic and civic mobility that CUNY makes possible.
I may deliver the speech, but I couldn't pull off a day like today without support.
Thank you to the incredible
@NYCCouncil
staff that put in so much work, not only for today's State of the City Address, but for the betterment of our city every day. You are true public servants.
The Council has a different vision for our city. It focuses on investing in the essential services that our communities rely on to be healthy and safe and that really address the root causes of our greatest challenges.
*NEW* I spoke to Adrienne Adams, the City Council speaker, about the coming budget battle over cuts to libraries and other services. Mayor Adams is expected to release his preliminary budget tomorrow. “We’re prepared to fight for our vision."
Tomorrow, in my home borough of Queens, I will deliver my first State of the City as Speaker of the
@NYCCouncil
. I will outline the focus of the Council as we work to deliver a safer, healthier, and more equitable city in our recovery from COVID.
Officer Jason Rivera represented the best of NYC, joining the NYPD to improve public safety and ensure communities, like the Inwood neighborhood where he grew up, had positive relationships with the department. The City mourns + our hearts are with his family.
I’m getting ready to step on stage at
@YorkCollegeCUNY
to deliver my first State of the City address. Follow along as I outline the
@NYCCouncil
’s focus to
#ExpandHealth
to make New York City more equitable for all New Yorkers. 🧵
Long before the pandemic, NYC faced a housing affordability crisis, which has only been exacerbated over the last two years. New Yorkers are clearer than ever: housing is their top priority for creating safe and healthy neighborhoods.
On
#HolocaustRemembranceDay
, we unite against the scourge of anti-Semitism, bigotry, & hate that led to the murder of 6 million Jewish people and millions of others at the hands of the Nazi regime. Today & always, to commemorate the victims, we say
#NeverAgain
to such brutality.
Today’s racist attack against the Buffalo community is a deplorable act of senseless violence fueled by hate. I pray for the families and community experiencing the loss & trauma of this attack. We must address the gun violence that continues to harm our communities & curb hate.
The SCOTUS decision to overturn NY’s gun laws is dangerous and puts NYers at risk. Our country and NYC are already facing a gun violence crisis and this ruling only threatens to worsen the harm inflicted on our communities.
@NYCCouncil
is prepared to take action to protect NYers.
This new
@propublica
report about the investigation into the police killing of Kawaski Trawick is very troubling, only adding to the volume of evidence for why the officers who killed him must be held accountable.
Thank you to our
@NYCCouncil
members, elected officials, community partners, and Council staff who made yesterday’s State of the City a success. Together, we will continue to deliver for NYers by prioritizing
#PeopleOverEverything
.
My thoughts are with the families and individuals harmed by this horrible tragedy today in the Bronx. I'm grateful for the selfless courage of New York's Bravest
@FDNY
and all our first responders. You are in my prayers.
Approximately 200 FDNY members are operating on scene of a 5-alarm fire at 333 East 181 Street in the Bronx. There are currently 31 serious injuries to civilians.
It’s outrageous that the NYPD is considering the dismissal of misconduct charges against Officers Thompson and Davis for their killing of Kawaski Trawick—even before the trial begins.
Accountability for their misconduct is important to Kawaski’s family, public safety, and NYC.
Proud to join 50+ elected officials calling on
@NYCMayor
&
@NYPDPC
to prevent last-minute changes by NYPD to misconduct charges against Officers Thompson & Davis in the case of Kawaski Trawick. Any proposal to remove charges is a gross attempt to evade accountability.
Here he is…my Dad, my Heart. I look in the mirror and see the face that he gave me staring back at me. I miss him every day, but know that he is smiling down – so proud of his first born. Happy Father’s Day to you and all Fathers everywhere.
What a proud moment at
@LGAairport
celebrating this milestone at Terminal B! ✈️
Thanks to this impressive redevelopment project, we can now welcome travelers to our city with a beautiful, modern, and accessible airport. Now let's continue moving New York forward!
Today, I joined my
@NYCCouncil
colleagues of Puerto Rican descent in urging the Biden administration to grant a Jones Act waiver to ensure that supplies from international ships can be off-loaded in Puerto Rico—providing much-needed relief to the island.
Her talent has awed us for decades, and her music has been the soundtrack to unforgettable moments, including many of my own. It was a true honor to present the legend
@ChakaKhan
with a
@NYCCouncil
proclamation at her billboard unveiling at Times Square.
This is dangerous and a serious violation of privacy. The “protesters” who did this must continue to be held accountable for their disgusting actions.
We stand with you,
@ebottcher
. We will never allow hate to prevail.
Tonight the Drag Story Hour protesters came to my apartment building and gained entry. My super called the cops and two of them were arrested for trespassing. This is pure hate, unmasked. If they think this is going to intimidate us, they’re mistaken. Our resolve is strengthened.
For years, the Trawick family waited for accountability for Kawaski's killing. After impediments by the NYPD, those delays are now being used to recommend no discipline for the officers.
NYers deserve an NYPD that holds its officers accountable.
Today, I joined fellow
@NYCCouncil
members and our philanthropic partners to announce “Welcome NYC,” a new initiative that will fund organizations supporting asylum seekers and our communities with crucial services.
