The same is true in the UK. Working in Westminster - a high stress environment - for sub ยฃ30k a year is not exactly enticing to normal people who have just spent the equivalent going to university to get a degree. you either attract people with family money or weirdos or both.

The low salary is also why most Democratic staffers are ideologues and/or people with family $. Republicans have a professional ecosystem that sets up youths for life, liberals lack that infrastructure, and working in politics for very low pay isn't appealing to "normies."
