We show that, rather than spurring more people to seek employment, 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐰𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 lead to a 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 for low-wage occupations like 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫, 𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫.

In my op-ed published today in the 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 (and 10 other newspapers), I highlight the findings of our recent 𝐍𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 (with @NeumarkEcon, @MichaelDFarren, @MissLiyaP, and Chris Kaiser)

Yet, my co-authors and I find the opposite is true: raising the minimum wage actually 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 in low-wage positions.
