Finally had a chance to listen through this pod with Sutton, which was interesting and amusing. As background, Sutton's "The Bitter Lesson" has become a bit of biblical text in frontier LLM circles. Researchers routinely talk about and ask whether this or that approach or idea

.@RichardSSutton, father of reinforcement learning, doesn’t think LLMs are bitter-lesson-pilled. My steel man of Richard’s position: we need some new architecture to enable continual (on-the-job) learning. And if we have continual learning, we don't need a special training

AI chatbots make you feel seen, heard, and understood — a tiny yes-man in your ear For NYT, I wrote about the potential harms of AI sycophancy and how to get a more neutral perspective https://t.co/RUZjl94kTF Thanks to @Matt_Nour @RianKMD @emollick @AdamMGrant @RaviDataIyer!

Not sure about the implications that chatbot use "induces psychosis", but certainly a new risk factor we need to think about and study for those already at risk. https://t.co/yLDGVCCfDD

I’m a psychiatrist. In 2025, I’ve seen 12 people hospitalized after losing touch with reality because of AI. Online, I’m seeing the same pattern. Here’s what ā€œAI psychosisā€ looks like, and why it’s spreading fast: 🧵

@ProfRobHoward It isn’t just general NHS issues. Its expanding bureaucracy,a lack of urgency in unis/NHS, & risk aversion causing delays of yrs. Problems haven’t grown from funding issues, but misplaced incentives where its ok if we never get started as long as the proformas completed correctly

The hidden cost of university administrative bloat isn't just financial—it's the talent drain. When systems impede rather than enable research, our brightest minds seek institutions where they can innovate. @paulg https://t.co/748hGcjsCG

Thanks to everyone for comments on my @Brain1878 editorial. There've been lots of questions on solutions. I'm afraid it's unlikely that any supreme body is going to come to our rescue. We have to do it ourselves. The problems came one by one. We can dismantle them one by one.

I believe that if you understood intelligence, you could build it in software form on a $1M budget, including training. It would not need to be trained on the entire Internet, nor on the thought process of thousands of experts.

Delighted to share that I’ll be joining @OxExpPsy as a group leader/Faculty next spring. My group will investigate how our cells build models of the world and of our internal goals, and how this goes wrong in disorders like schizophrenia.
