Excited that I’ll be biking in Yale Blue and continuing to explore the East Coast for the next year! I’ve learned a ton at Harvard working with @S_Stantcheva the last two years and am looking forward to diving into new research areas at @YaleEconomics with William Nordhaus!

not to brag or anything, but the other day I considered citing a sociology paper
Purely from a practical perspective: econ PhD students could spend more time looking into other fields. It's actually very useful for writing papers! You look very impressive if you can quote sociologists or historians or lawyers or the like

1/ My research with @jeffreypclemens (@UCSDEcon) and @stanveuger (@AEIecon) on the effectiveness of federal fiscal relief to state and local governments during COVID-19 is finally published and online at the Journal of Macroeconomics! https://t.co/BojyW4ttsq

This is who ICE is deporting. Exceptional immigrant entrepreneur with a wife and four kids, here for 36 years, whisked away to Mexico without notice. The Sos did this to my grandfather, my parents escaped them to the U.S. Seeing this here is just beyond belief.
Sergio Garcia, celebrated Chef who came to the US before ICE even existed. Deported after 36 years. The picture tells you a lot about the decline of the Republican party. https://t.co/GfrPB5nnza

Does anyone have good resources for training undergrad RAs? "How to do a lit review," "why reproducible code is important," etc.

The main way that the US has been able to flourish despite its horrendous domestic K-12 education is because nearly every smart person across the world has wanted to come here and build. The recent 6 months has signaled a U-turn on the latter. The reckoning will be brutal.
The long run effect of national policy can be summarized by the change in supply of human capital. China is rising bc they graduate 7x more engineers per year than us. US is shooting itself twice by letting K-12 stagnate while scaring away the smart ppl who want to come here.

Shameless plug: and if you’re interested in reading more about the deployment of economics by the judiciary, may I interest you all in a paper on how the same asset is worth different amounts of money depending on what type of judge is asking? https://t.co/O9cB1fsTyM
This new QJE paper suggests that economics as a set of ideas can have big consequences even for decisions of judges: "The 🇺🇸law-and-economics movement shifted legal outcomes. After economics training, judges used econ analysis, rendered conservative rulings related to regulation"

"Even voting?" "Especially voting."
"Political brokers use social networks to identify and target reciprocal non-copartisans for vote buying. Parties recruit brokers central in networks to sway persuadable voters." From @rduartegonzalez, Finan, @HLarreguy, and @LauraASchechter: https://t.co/bgFlhCbem7

In positive news: 4 monarchs hatched in my garden this morning! The western monarch population has declined by 99% since the 1980s and just 9,119 butterflies were counted last winter, so this is very exciting!
I was delighted to unexpectedly find 8 tiny caterpillars on my narrowleaf milkweed the other day. The only orange monarch we want is a butterfly!

I have leftover funding for a PhD student for one year (ideally Sept '25 - Sept '26). Might be a good fit for someone wanting to delay going on the market. Please send interested students my way!

Andrew has an impressive JMP on how different areas of the law conduct valuation - and how they can learn from each other (for example, tax law learning from corporate law). He has other great papers too. Some school will be lucky to have him!
I am on the legal academic job market! My job talk paper is on how courts in tax, corporate, and bankruptcy law spheres value business interests systematically differently, such that the same asset is "worth" different amounts of money depending on the substantive underlying law.
