Proper butterflies and lump in throat today. Thank you to everyone, including those research volunteers who made this moment in history possible. Never prouder of the NHS.
I am delighted to share with Twittersphere that I have been appointed as Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
@SheffieldHosp
. I am hugely excited, please, humbled & privileged. I know that all 17k staff and volunteers in "Team STH" will be a joy to lead.
#PROUD
I am completely humbled today- received this anonymous card and gift from a member of Team STH. I have to confess to having a wee tear in my eye when I read it, just the most lovely random care and kindness from someone I don't know. Thank you, whoever you are.

Evidence for the member of the public (no name, but DOB 16/2/47) who stopped me yesterday and asked me to get 10 huge bars of dairy milk to our junior doctors - I delivered them this morning and they were massively grateful. It wasn't easy to resist cracking a bar open!
Yorkshire Day and my first day as Interim CEO at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals - I promise that I'll do my best - yeuch I sound like a Brownie - but I will do my very best - STH here I come - hold my hand everyone, what an adventure...
Yesterday at our Board of Directors we approved our new electricity contract for
@SheffieldHosp
. Excited? Probably not... But what was great is that we have agreed to pay a bit extra to secure our 'leccy from renewables for the next 5 years.
#PROUD
It's Weston Park's 50th birthday this week...covid scuppered lots of lovely plans, but a few of us gathered with balloons today. Happy birthday to all at this very special cancer centre.
Today I am signing 457 long service (20+ years) award certificates for our ceremony on 14 November, which is impressive enough, but there are 3 for people with more than 50 years' (!!!) service to
@SheffieldHosp
and its predecessor organisations.

Finally got to the new fruit & veg stall at Royal Hallamshire today. It's great - bumped into Alison Cope, bought mango, Scottish raspberries and Corn on the Cob (all for under£3!). And the stallholders are lovely. 😀😍🍆🌶️🥒🥬🥦🌽🥕🍒🍍🥝🥑🥔
@SheffieldHosp
Look what we did today... Fred Lee (Clinical Director for Medical Imaging) suggested to me that we should put a Pride Flag along the temporary CT scanner
@SheffieldHosp
Here we and it are in today's lovely sunshine at the Hallamshire Hospital... 🏳️🌈
#PROUD
Today
@SheffieldHosp
we received the amazing news that our services have been given an overall rating of 'Good' by the CQC with many services achieving 'Outstanding'. Thank you to all 17,000 staff and volunteers who made this possible.
#PROUD
It has been a difficult few days. I, and the whole senior leadership team, are completely gutted by the outcome of this inspection, but totally committed to putting it right. The whole of
#TeamSTH
remains committed to delivering their best every day to everyone we serve.
Chief Executive Kirsten Major has reassured patients they will continue to get safe good care following a report published today by the CQC which has downgraded the Trust from Good to Requires Improvement. Read more here:
So delighted for our volunteers at
@SheffieldHosp
who have today been awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. Just about to go on
@BBCSheffield
and sing their praises. 🙏
We're triallling planting more edible things around the
@SheffieldHosp
for staff and patients. First foray is some herbs along B Road at the Hallamshire Hospital. Here's the lovely coriander tub earlier today that our fabulous gardeners have planted. 🍏🍐🌶️🍆🥬🥦🥕
2/2 We now need the space in our own stores for COVID stuff and other supplies. Shout out to Sheffield Arena who have been amazing in offering to store the old beds until they can be disposed after COVID19. Thank you Fly DSA
@SheffieldArena
team for all your incredible support.
As the sun starts to set on 2020, I just wanted to wish everyone in
#TeamSTH
and the city of Sheffield a very, happy New Year when it comes. It has been quite a year and I am immensely proud of
@SheffieldHosp
and everyone else in the city who has suffered such a terrible year.
A chapter in the incredible vaccine story closes as
@SheffieldHosp
moves out of
@SheffieldArena
. New vaccine centre on Monday at Longley Lane next to Northern General. An amazing partnership. Thank you one and all at the Arena - you are part of COVID history in this city.🙏💉
but I cannot remember anyone suggesting that the response to Shipman was to explain how vulnerable people check the GMC register. He, and Couzens, had the 'credentials' (and cuffs) the challenge is stopping such people getting and keeping credentials. 2/2
We got an ice cream van to come on to main sites
@SheffieldHosp
today and they seemed pretty popular with everyone! I got to fulfill life's dream of a wee stint in an ice cream van. 🥵🍦Great news - it will be back again tomorrow.
Incredibly sorry we've had to do this, the transmissibility of omicron means it is important to patient safety to minimise the number of people in our hospitals for now. Will be kept under review and reversed ASAP. Note exceptional circumstance arrangements at the link below.
No visiting in our hospitals from 31st December 2021.
Unfortunately, due to the spread of the Omicron variant, we are temporarily stopping visiting in our hospitals.
More details are available here:
Wishing everyone in twittersphere a very happy hogmanay, and particular thanks to those working in health and social care services keeping people safe and as well as they can be tonight. A very big Happy New Year to everyone who is part of
@SheffieldHosp
Happy
#InternationalWomensDay
. And a special thank you to all of the wonderful women who are part of
#TeamSTH
who have been part of the amazing response to COVID-19. Remember we can all
#ChooseToChallenge
and make a difference.
72 years ago today, the most amazingly, wonderful, fantastic and equitable health care system in the world was born, and it my absolute privilege to be part of it. 2020 will surely be one of the toughest years in its history.
My gloriously blue sky day has come for the vaccine. Thank you to everyone
@SheffieldHosp
and
@SheffieldArena
for a fabulously smooth and slick process. You were fantastic. And I even remembered to wear short sleeves!
Thank you every one and all, and a special thank you to those doing it for
@SheffieldHosp
in hospitals and community services across the Steel City. 🎄☃️
Absolute pleasure to show
@MattHancock
around our fantastic new Stroke Pathway Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre. Complete redesign of stroke pathways in Sheffield so much easier because staff from acute and community services work alongside each other in the same teams.
Had my first visit to breast screening programme today. Evening appt ✅️ Super quick (15 mins) ✅️ Really friendly and welcoming ✅️ Nothing like the horror stories of squished and sore - a wee bit uncomfy at most ✅️ Would recommend to anyone called 💯
@SheffieldHosp
It is a huge privilege to have been asked by the Chairman, and to have agreed, to act as STH's CEO in the gap between Andrew Cash's retirement and a new CEO. I'll do everything within my ability and effort to make this as smooth and successful as possible for staff and patients.
4/4 c) An employer who values and welcomes everyone is more likely to attract the most talented workforce. Talented people that reflect the population they serve provide great care.
Amazing new fruit and veg stall at NGH,
@SheffieldHosp
. Bought some fabulous figs. The stallholder was keen I didn't take a pic as it looked so much better and fuller this morning, he relented but is going to send me one tomorrow morning in all its glory!😍🥦🥬🥒🍆🌽🍅🌶️🥑🍒🥕
In other news this morning - I'm 4 years fag free today. Still vaping. If you're thinking of going for it, I can't recommend more highly, whatever way you so it.
1/4 Tonight at 8pm people from across the UK will give NHS and social care staff a round of applause from their gardens, front doors, balconies and windows in appreciation of the work they are doing in these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 outbreak.
If you follow me, you may have noticed slightly desperate tweets urging people to get jabbed. This letter in today's paper is one of the reasons. If we don't reduce levels of community infection, more nhs staff will isolate and we will not be able to do all we need to.
#GrabAJab
About to arrive at work? What"s the first thing to do? Wash those hands with a new anthem for today...👇way better than happy birthday... Gloria's stardom reaches new heights.
A very happy St David's Day. Today is also my 2 year anniversary as
@SheffieldHosp
and marks a decade for me as part of
#TeamSTH
. It's also 373 days since we admitted our first COVID +ve patient. It's definitely the most unforgettable year in the last 10!
Sod cutting (with a very shiny shovel!) to start the construction of aerial walkway between Weston Park and main hospital campus
@SheffieldHosp
today. Will make a massive difference to how patients are managed and staff working together for patient care.

I am always very proud to be the Chief Executive of
@SheffHosp
but this weekend really reminded me why. The response of my colleagues across clinical and corporate teams this weekend was exemplary when we had two temporary power interruptions at the Northern General Hospital.
Was absolutely fantastic to be part of this final clap, for EVERYONE in the
@SheffieldHosp
and the wider NHS everywhere AND, for carers, for key workers and also to say a big, gignormous thank you to those
#StayAtHome
peeps that protected the NHS.
#StaySafe
#PROUD
If tonight is the last night of

Fabulous new painting and story from
@PeteMcKee
capturing that moment repeated throughout the

every day, the shift handover. This is one of our

Chsterman wards. 🙏
The Handover
A scene I witnessed while in hospital last year which I felt I had to paint. The moment when the night shift passes information on to the day shift. Read the full story in the link below. Long live the

3 cheers for the NHS cleaning staff!! I work for the NHS as a cleaner and feel that my job is as important as anyone elses in the NHS, i have a job to do andd the hospitals still have to be cleaned, if we are at home, whats going to happen to them?
Spent a few hours shadowing A&E consultant Justin Squires tonight...met lots of very lovely patients having a variety of tough times displaying lots of Sheffield stoicism. Huge amounts of care, compassion and expertise shown by every member of staff. Thank you.
#PROUD
Had the absolute pleasure of being part of the unveiling of our remembering baby memorial quilt at the Jessops Maternity Hospital
@SheffieldHosp
. The very kind
@amateuradam
cut the ribbon for us between his shows
@crucibletheatre
last night and tonight.
Too hot? 🥵 Why not don a pair of fluffy odd socks and take a picture to raise awareness of lymphoedema - a condition that affects almost 430,000 people in the U.K. If it's good enough for Judi Dench - this is me on the stairs at Clock Tower
@SheffieldHosp
#LymphoedemaAwareness
Fantastic to see so many women from
#TeamSTH
win in 3 categories of the Women of Sheffield Awards. Huge congratulations to our Clinical Expert Group (who all happen to be women), Balbir Bhogal and Cariad Evans
@cariadmevans
and a MASSIVE thank you.
#InternationalWomensDay
A message for members of
#TeamSTH
about the situation in Ukraine and our concerns about colleagues with connections in and to Ukraine and Russia and what we are trying to do to provide practical support.
It may not have been the weather for it this week in Sheffield 🥶, but our secret garden at Northern General
@SheffieldHosp
is now complete for staff, patients and visitors alike thanks to
@SHCFundraising
. Better weather next week, official opening to come, plans afoot for RHH.
All boosted and raring to go. Super easy and lovely staff and volunteers, and I am not just saying that because they're part of
#TeamSTH
. Thank you.🙏 And I got a sticker...🥳
4/4 But I also want to share the applause and thank all of those other essential workers helping to keep us going - the teachers, the refuse people, the shopworkers, the lorry drivers and EVERYONE else, but most especially those that are
#StayingAtHome
- we so need you to do that
An absolute testament to the virology, laboratory and public health teams in the city. 👏⭐️ Just need to stick with the plan - get tested if symptoms, wash hands, stay 2 metres apart, isolate if +ve or a contact...
Like everyone else, I have been so troubled by Sarah Everard and what happened to her, as a woman and as a CEO of an organisation with trusted professionals. The times were very, very different,... 1/2
I was so delighted when we were able to respond to
@Kangaroosteve
's request for a tall building and space for a mast to do this and support
@edalemrt
. 👍
We were delighted to be able to help out
@edalemrt
by siting some new radio equipment on top of the Royal Hallamshire. The improved network will help mountain rescue to aid people who are ill or injured out in the peaks
ALL inadequate ratings that we had before have been lifted, including for Maternity services and Urgent & Emergency Care. We are also now rated Good for the Caring and Effective domains overall.
I spent the morning with
@SheffieldHosp
Safeguarding Team today and I was completely humbled by what they do. They are a really small team - incredibly professional and knowledgeable and holding some of the most complex cases and stories in our city.
#PROUD
My elf on the shelf wishes you and yours a Christmas full of negativity. And a special thank you to everyone in
#TeamSTH
@SheffieldHosp
who is working today to care for our patients.
There is obviously much else in the news today, but wanted to wish everyone in the NHS right across the UK a very happy birthday
#74Today
And a massive happy birthday and a thank you to the people who support and fund a free at the point of need model of health care.

NHS heroes need your support to manage COVID -19 second wave
Staff at
@SheffieldHosp
are asking the public for support as a second surge of COVID-19 cases in the City’s hospitals threatens to reach similar levels as before.

1/4 Today, I had the absolute privelige of 'opening' our wall of thanks, which brings together a permanent version of all of the artworks of thanks we received from the children of the city for key workers.
Great sentiment from
@O2AcademySheff
for the whole NHS family. But don't forget the frontline includes so many - social care, shop workers, drivers, truckers, water engineers, telephone engineers and many others, but *especially* the stay at homers. We so need you.
#StayAtHome
Absolute privilege to meet Terry Waite yesterday and walk round Weston Park Hospital. So kind, engaging and giving of his time with everyone he met. He shared some very moving stories, including how much he longed for colours when in captivity.
@WPCancerCharity
@SheffieldHosp
2/4 a) Patients who are confident that they will be welcomed regardless of who they are are likely to be less anxious. Less anxious patients have better health outcomes.
An absolute pleasure to welcome all of the new F1 doctors (blimey I feel old!) to their fabulous career, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
@SheffieldHosp
, the NHS and to wish them a very Happy Yorkshire Day.
1/2 In a time long long ago before COVID19 we ordered 1,800 new beds for our hospitals as part of a planned scheme to replace old beds. Cue the nightmare of new ones arriving but plans for chucking out the old ones stopped by COVID19.
A bit of a along week with CQC inspection at STH, but so worth it when inspectors said in feedback "without exception everyone we have met has been fantastic and open and we have seen wonderful care". More to come in next couple of months.
#PROUD
. Well done everyone.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals garden awarded ‘Best in Show’ 👏🌻
A garden designed for patients at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, was awarded the 'Best in Show' title at Chelsea Flower Show.

Absolutely delighted to be part of the Microsystems Coaching Academy Cohort 13 (lucky for some) graduation today. Uniquely they were all Sheffield based and so we have great hopes for the Sheffield system as a result of their great plans. Congratulations.

I heard about the Rotherham river of flowers on the news a while back...I was there at a meeting today and this is genuinely a photo out of car window whilst queuing at roundabout in rush hour. Cheered me up no end and couldn't be in the least grumpy at traffic.😍
Such a long time since I read this Rosen poem and it is fantastic and humbling and an amazing description of our core purpose. And do get well soon

Vaccine 2 and a full house of stickers now. Apparently, some decline the sticker 😲, must be the 5 year old in me... Super efficient service
@SheffieldHosp
and
@SheffieldArena
. Thank you. 🙏
Merry Christmas one and all, and a very special thank you to all of those who are working in health and social care treating and caring for those who need them, both in Sheffield and the wider NHS.
@SheffieldHosp
Friday afternoon was the start of the goodbyes and good wishes to Andrew Cash and Hilary Chapman for their forthcoming retirements. It really is the end of an era at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
Spent some of today signing certificates for all of those almost 400 people nominated by colleagues and patients for STH's Thank You Awards. Really humbling how many 'thanks' there are to go round. A little over 2 weeks before ceremony night...always a brilliant evening
