In July 2019, JetBlue lost my wheelchair...misplaced it, or...no wait, they threw it in a pile with lost luggage.
Anyway, that same day, I filed a formal complaint with
@USDOT
Today, nearly 3 YEARS later, I finally got a response from them that JetBlue violated multiple rules
@Variety
Hey - did you talk to anyone who's disabled about their feelings towards this film? and the lack of representation by
#ActuallyAutistic
people in a movie that's going to make money off of disability? Will
@Sia
be donating to causes that contribute to disability equality in arts?
Will Dept of Transportation formally reprimand JetBlue? They couldn't tell me.
JetBlue's had repeated Sec 14 violations w/out notable consequences.
Please
@PeteButtigieg
what will you do to stop damaged & lost wheelchairs? Airlines don't care unless you hit them with $$ fines
I can't believe Love is Blind is having a hard time sourcing DC singles.
I know *so* many single folks around here. Are they emotionally available? No. Are they ready for commitment?
Also no.
Please read about the passing of disability rights activist, Engracia Figueroa.
Her death was preventable. When airlines lose our wheelchairs/mobility aids, there can be dire consequences. Congress must force airlines to do better.
@Sia
@TomeLevi
@leslieodomjr
@maddieziegler
ok...sooo now you're bashing sex workers and recovering drug addicts. Do you understand that everything you're saying is problematic? And in the midst, you've been attacking Autistic people?
@yashar
@TaylorLorenz
she's also someone who bullies others, so let's not continue to keep people like her on such a high pedestal. It's harmful to the people have been on the receiving end of her anger
Nothing like waking up to more ableism from media this morning.
Mobility aids does not equal incompetence or inability to do one's job.
This makes me so angry. There were non-ableist ways to do this. Shame on the New Yorker & the execs that approved this
Ya know what’s in that box? My wheelchair! Across from me on
@SouthwestAir
I can’t explain how powerful it is knowing my wheelchair hasn’t left me, can’t get damaged or end up in the wrong city.
Every person deserves this peace of mind for their mobility device when flying.
it’s laughable that Taylor Lorenz now claims to be a champion of disability. She degraded & bullied me.
Lorenz doesn’t deserve misogyny or rampant hate but she also doesn’t deserve the level of praise & sympathy that fellow liberals uncritically throw at her feet.
I got pitched with a new term today because apparently disabled=bad
“Adaptively abled” - like, what does this even mean?
PR people, I beg of you - learn the basics of what you’re pitching before you reach out to a disabled journalist.
#SayTheWord
I spoke to
@npratc
at the time - I got my chair back, but not before JetBlue humiliated me, put me in an airport chair where my feet dragged on the ground. They wouldn't even let my dad help me when he arrived at the airport. They treated me like s**t
@SenDuckworth
I love that you refer to it as your Alive Day, senator! That resonates so much with me. I usually refer to the day I became paralyzed as my "accident day" but I love your positioning.
Thank you for tirelessly fighting for disabled Americans. I hope you run for POTUS
@adrierising
take chances on yourself now. you'll be too afraid in your 30s to take the risks that you take in your 20s so do them all. It's ok to be irresponsible and not know who you are yet. You'll find it & there's no hurry <3
Pregnancy is deadly for many disabled people, who are more likely to have complications and to be poor or can’t travel to another state for healthcare.
Abortion is a disability rights issue. Abortion is disability health care.
#RoeVsWade
#dosomething
My friend just texted that Tina Fey just called out Sia's movie for being awful & problematic.
Thank you, Tina Fey! That's what allyship looks like! Other celebs should follow your lead.

Non-disabled political reporters are suddenly taking an interest in Madison Cawthorn's lies & dangers.
But disabled writers like
@slooterman
& myself, & disabled activists in North Carolina have been talking about all of these things for at least a year. You just ignored it
GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn lied about the car wreck that partially paralyzed him, says a former close pal.
He also falsely said he was "declared dead" when he wasn't + said he'd been prepping to start at U.S. Naval Academy pre-crash but he'd been rejected.
@fortesalatifi
airbnbs have never been much of an option for most disabled folks. Anything accessible was either wildly expensive or near-impossible to find. Hotels never stopped being the legitimate option for disabled ppl.
And the fact that my chair is considered "luggage" is dispicable for all airlines. The industry needs to change its approach to how lost wheelchairs are dealt with.
The Georgia Court of Appeals essentially decided that the ADA doesn't count for state employees, citing the 11th amendment. This is a dangerous precedent for disabled GA govt workers.
The ADA is federal law.
Shout out to this flight attendant on
@united
406.
Disabled people often feel guilty about taking up space or the idea of inconveniencing people. This person made me feel welcome & made my flight better. He deserves all the love in the world.
Not only did
@JetBlue
leave my custom wheelchair in NYC but they have NO IDEA where it is. Anyone in a wheelchair knows that not knowing where THEIR chair is feels like a piece of them is missing. It takes away my freedom, independence and ability to function
@TheAtlantic
@gcaw
This is such gloriously bad take & should’ve only been written by a disabled person. I expected something smarter from the Atlantic but this is nonsense
I finally have my chair back but this ordeal has been one of my worst nightmares come true. I'm so so sorry to others with similar experiences. Full breakdown coming tomorrow. I have LOTS of recommendations for the airlines on how to move forward & be better
cc:
@SenDuckworth
Airlines need to do better. To say I'm distraught in this moment, not knowing where my wheelchair is would be an understatement. How do airlines continue to allow this to happen? My chair is not luggage, it's my lifeline
Disabled employees shouldn’t have to educate their HR teams about accessibility.
And if they do, the employee(s) should be compensated for it.
#DisabilityPrideMonth
#areyouin
Very telling that CNN is no longer calling the protests pro-Palestine or anti-war, but “anti-Israel”
Will MSNBC follow suit? What caused this messaging shift?
S*a's tweets are ableist and showing that she doesn't understand disability.
She's also showcasing why non-disableds need to stop making these movies. The mere fact that she consulted Autism Speaks shows she doesn't listen to the community
@SnoringDoggoputs
it all perfectly
To add insult to injury,
@JetBlue
is truly treating my chair as if it was simply luggage and not my legs. I was told by the driver that my chair will be delivered to me, "after we get done dropping off some other luggage"
@MFMTheUnionThug
@USDOT
I'll email it to you. Long story short, the DOT did find JetBlue was in violation.
why it took them 3 years is beyond me. Airlines essentially have almost no recourse or reason to do what's right. (sorry, I'm crabby)
I'm really empathetic to PRs who pitch, pitch, pitch & do several follow ups. (Trust me, I get it!)
But also, need PRs to understand that journalists are doing our best & can't provide detailed feedback to every one of the 60+ pitches a day we get. Or may have delayed responses.
@SenDuckworth
Our country owes so much to your service, Senator. I'm grateful for all you do for the disability community and bring needed representation to The Hill.
You are a signal of strength and compassion. Thank you for fighting for us.
Madison Cawthorn's stunt at the RNC broke my heart last night. It made me want to scream and it definitely made me cry. So I wrote about why it was wrong & the harm it did.
#CripTheVote
#DisabilityTwitter
When someone is without their every day chair, even for a few hours, our entire lives are impacted: using the restroom is more difficult, getting in/out of the car, I can't even use my car right now because I don't have my chair. This is not dramatic but it cannot be overstated
The vast majority of folks tweeting
#istandwithjoerogan
are white people defending Rogan's use of the n-word.
These people are just as gross as Rogan & don't understand how free speech works.
You can't use hate speech while doing your job.
Fuck the non-disabled people who called their pets emotional support animals just to skirt the rules.
You have done irreparable damage to disabled people who rely on their emotional support animals. We sacrifice for your abled world & you damage us every step of the way.
I've now been without my wheelchair for over 4 hours. Luckily they have located it at JFK and are flying it to SYR. I still do not have written confirmation of most of the conversations with
@JetBlue
despite requesting it repeatedly
@oliverdarcy
She keeps doing stuff like this & all it does is make radical right-wingers have a point. How much credibility does she have at this point?!
Sadly I know I'm not alone. People with disabilities face this every single day while traveling and I'm horrified. In 28 years, Ive never not had my chair
Alright DC girlies - where do you all get your work clothes from?
DC appears to have a very specific aesthetic, and IDK where to begin, but I'm sick of looking ridiculous at these Hill events
After 1,170 job applications & over 1,200 failed attempts -
I start my new full-time role today. Story to follow.
I'm incredibly grateful to be in this position.
As an update: as I'm researching the rules of regulations from the DoT,
@JetBlue
violated multiple federal regulations. More to come.
#flyingwhiledisabled
@DSA_LosAngeles
this is such a ridiculous, out-of-touch tweet.
@DemSocialists
- if you want disabled people to be part of the movement, you best denounce this because disabled people have been successfully organizing via twitter for years
Disabled people will go to bed heartbroken tonight, knowing our hero, Judy Heumann is no longer with us
Pls, non-disabled folks: learn about her. Judy’s activism likely benefits you in ways you don’t realize. The world is a little less bright tonight.
Gutted 😔
Heumann was instrumental in pushing to expand the civil rights of Americans with disabilities and continued to advocate for disability rights around the globe. She died on Saturday at age 75.
It's infuriating to listen to Alex Azar say that Trump's response has been good when there are 90,000 people dead. 90,000 families grieving and millions of people fearful for our lives.
#CNNSOTU
I was blowing off steam - didn't expect this tweet to take off.
What happened to me with the airline is tiny compared to what disabled people in Ukraine are going through.
If you want to be a disabled ally, consider visiting
@MyEDF
or
@kdnerak33
@iamharaldur
That student needs some books written by powerful disabled leaders. Kids often want to call disability something else because society teaches them that it’s a negative. Instead, they need to be taught that having a disability is great & puts you in w/other powerful people! 😊
Once it's up online, please take 15 minutes & watch Simone Biles interview on
@60Minutes
She's an incredible athlete; more though, she's an amazing person, full of compassion, fun & head-strong. She's a great role model, no matter your age or profession.
#60Minutes
Welp, I just accidentally stumbled on the hell that is parents of disabled children on Instagram. The ableism is astounding & I really hope that some parents are true allies for their children.
I think they're out there, but they're not the influencers w/20k followers.
Note to ableds - just because Madison Cawthorn is paralyzed does not mean he can make antisemitic statements without consequence.
He's playing on your instinct to feel badly for him, knowing that you'll likely give him a pass. Don't.
An entire segment on remote work on
@MSNBC
this morning w/out mention of disabled people.
Remote work has the biggest impact on disabled people & pathways for economic equality for us.
This is why newsrooms need disabled talent. Otherwise our perspective & stories are ignored.
PSA: NEVER touch a person's wheelchair unless you're invited.
This seems to happen more during the holidays but tonight a man offered to push me as I was going across the white house lawn. I said no, thanks. He started pushing me anyway then looked annoyed when I yelled at him.
Personal news: after applying for 1,170 jobs, at times experiencing blatant ableism & discrimination, I accepted a fantastic full-time writing job.
I'm overwhelmed with excitement & feel incredibly lucky.
I'll also continue running
@MediaDisabled
! We're accepting applicants
Elizabeth Holmes is due to be sentenced for fraud. Last year we explained how the trial of the Theranos founder contained lessons for decision-makers of all kinds
I wish PR pros would stop including that I'm disabled in the briefing documents about me. I can tell.
Unless the conversation is specifically focused on DE&I or accessibility, it's completely irrelevant.
@RightsRobins
Actually...yes. I go outside, but not to commute which is better. My disability makes being in an office full-time unbearable so I'm grateful to WFH. When I did commute, I had a tiny desk & my computer, with less sunlight & no personal space. *That* was depressing
I love Cory Booker. "trump doesn't deserve my time or attention. The people do." Senator Booker is clearly in so much pain, rightfully. We need justice for black Americans.
#CNNSOTU
#BlackLivesMatter
"presidential disability" - this is the closest we may get to a conversation about disability tonight, folks.
A disability doesn't mean you can't serve in office. Disability doesn't incapacitate you.
The framing of the question is not cool.
#CripTheVote
#Debates2020
Please read Sotomayor's dissent. This is voter suppression against people with disabilities & an ADA violation
I'm sick of people saying ableism "isn't really a problem." It's really bad & you should care. It could be your vote. Your life
#CripTheVote
PRs: don't pitch an entire beat team. Pitch 1 reporter on that team.
It's just sloppy. And I promise - we all talk to each other, so if your news is timely/relevant, we'll get to it.
Fantastic piece and accompanying art on the reality of living with a disability in America, and just how much more expensive it is to just get by.
#DisabilityTax
@qatarairways
@mamila_jain
do you not have an accessibility/disability team? That's who should be in touch with her. You should be spending every waking moment doing nothing but working to get her chair to her.
You have stolen her limbs, not misplaced her clothes.
@JetBlue
This thread is meant to accomplish two things: bring awareness to how passengers with disabilities are treated, and change the way the airlines treat mobility devices.
#limbsnotluggage
@JetBlue
Further update for those following: Spoke at length with
@JetBlue
today and provided them with ideas on how they can prevent this from happening to others. Pleased to say they have been receptive, and are bringing my suggestions to higher-ups
If the Affordable Care Act is dismantled, disabled people will die. And the GOP will have blood on their hands.
The GOP has no healthcare plan while they're trying to take away my right to healthcare. I'm angry & fed up.

I can't believe this needs to be said: alt text is not for giving photo credit.
Alt text is for describing the image, so blind and visually impaired people have access. That's why it's an ACCESSibility feature
@ellle_em
I’ve had guys do this kind of crap with women in wheelchairs or other visible disabilities. Then they act like it’s a joke, laugh to their friends, but hey, they did the crippled girl a favor for a few weeks. Men like this are 🚮
@briannasbell
this bums me out - I had to answer this question on my dog's application, but it was so they could match me with the right pup. (ended up w/a lazy basset mix)
There's a way to do this that's not ableist yet still puts the pet's best interest first.
Was blown away by the kindness from
@jfreewright
this evening, going out of his way to say hello to me. I’m beyond amped for
@WestworldHBO
season 2 next week. Thank you so so much
Ok so I’m actually angry about this one. instead of saying disability, launches into an inspo porn read that’s clearly meant for a non-disabled audience.
“Flipped the script from being disabled to being adaptively abled”
ie: internalized ableism
note: the plaintiff in the case was fired after she got cancer.
People like to think disability discrimination isn't a thing in the workplace anymore b/c of federal protections, but ask any disabled person: workplace discrimination happens every damn day
Dying to hear what employment lawyers have to say about Elon publicly attacking a disabled employee for his disability.
Would this count as proof of discrimination?
**this is not for a story. It's my own curiosity as a disabled person**
@anothercohen
The reality is that this guy (who is independently wealthy) did no actual work, claimed as his excuse that he had a disability that prevented him from typing, yet was simultaneously tweeting up a storm.
Can’t say I have a lot of respect for that.
I had Noom for all of a week. Anything that rewards you for weighing yourself daily is dangerous.
It's weight watchers with millennial packaging...except at least WW is somewhat supportive.
Trevor Noah is the only media personality to call out what’s really happening in the Pennsylvania senate race - blatant ableism.
The Oz campaign & media are fueling the gross notion that needing assistive technology makes you unqualified for a job.
This is EXACTLY how this headline should be written. Well done,
@variety
- I hope other outlets follow your lead.
Ken Jennings tweets weren't "insensitive" as other outlets have said. They were ableist.
Today was my 1 year Morning Brew-versary ☕️
I've said it 1,000X, but landing a job in media as a disabled woman took years, & was so defeating.
I'm grateful every day for the privilege to do this work. But every singled newsroom needs disabled women.
#RepresentationMatters
One of the best takeaways from (years in) therapy: if you're not promptly hearing back from a friend, colleague, etc, chances are - it's not about you.
They're likely going through their own sh*t & will reply when they have space.

@jaketapper
talking about
#CripTheVote
and the disability community right now is so unbelievably powerful. This representation of us right now is incredibly important.
Thank you

for making this moment happen. Abled Americans are getting an education thanks to you
