17 years ago, when my children were very small, I was diagnosed with serious cancer - and 14 minutes ago I turned 59.
One more birthday I never thought I’d see.
SNL - believe it or not - used to be this blazing, almost counterculture revolution; it was druggy, inexact, unfettered, glorious.
It wasn’t a bunch of pampered wankers sheltering in a safe room because they can’t handle sharing a stage with a weirdo.
New York Times: We are very, very afraid of Republican backlash in the midterms.
Also New York Times: Our new word for women and girls is “menstruater”
Hi, I’m Caitlin 60 years old and Stage IV cancer - but don’t do anything on my account. I’ll wear my mask and be careful. That’s on me. You guys need your lives back.
Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m 35 and a doctor. I also have a heart condition that puts me at an increased risk for serious complications from covid.

Katherine Maher: Wikipedia is biased because it is "famously written by men," privileges "European models of reference to the written word," and excludes "women, non-binary, and non-gender-conforming individuals."
She is WokeGPT.
Allow me, a longtime cancer survivor, to explain why you’re a bit depressed: you just spent a year in survival mode. Now the danger has passed - and you’re having to power down from high-alert tunnel vision to low-threat normal life. It takes a few months to adjust.
What we're seeing on college campuses is not a "woke agenda" that can be somehow eliminated. It's the product of forty years of thought, study, degree-granting, hiring decisions, tenure decisions and policy-making.
It's not a blight on American higher education. It IS American…
What the Times did to
@bariweiss
is unconscionable. It’s not civil, It’s not in the reader’s interest, and the well-documented culture of extreme harassment will, I hope, now come to light. This is the biggest media story in years.
I’m not sure who benefits from the collapse of California. It has to be intentional because it’s so thoroughgoing and happening so quickly. But I can’t figure out the true engine and the reward.
Not trolling. I honestly don’t understand why the US is participating in an Olympics taking place in a country with one million Muslims in concentration camps.
I’m not at all trolling, I just don’t know the justification.
It seems bizarre.

because she wrote a series of books that made readers out of millions of children and adolescents.
And she has every right to express her opinion on cultural matters.
And because she's right about them.
A close friend is dying, and I've been spending mornings with him, listening and talking about the big things.
There are moments in life when the curtain parts for just a moment and you see the truth. The only thing that matters is love.
Hey
@AP
, a 60 year old woman was beheaded this week while at prayer
A schoolteacher was beheaded ten days ago, walking home.
The French have not "incited anger."
They are the target of a bloodthirsty campaign by religious extremists.
You dishonor the dead.
Vive la France.
You know what children could really use right now?
Grown ups who keep their own fears and anxieties to themselves, reassure kids that all is well, and that whatever grown up problems exist, grown ups will handle them.
Fetterman's slob wear is an uncharacteristically elitist gesture. He comes from an affluent family, so he's never had to prove that he belongs in an exalted space.
A working class person would never dress that way to an important job.

Republicans are all upset that I’m connecting the dots between poverty and crime.
I know most of them haven’t experienced or seen these issues first hand, but I have.
This may be hard for them to admit, but poverty and crime are highly linked, both violent & nonviolent alike.
Andrew Yang has the one thing none of the others have: he's recognizably human. And because our AI hasn't been fully downloaded yet, there is still some small part of us that recognizes humanity and reaches out for it. Like is calling out to like.
AOC on increased NYC crime: "Maybe this has to do with the fact that people aren't paying their rent & are scared to pay their rent & so they go out & they need to feed their child & they don't have money so... they feel like they either need to shoplift some bread or go hungry."
When students at a private, Ivy League, highly exclusive university (96% of applicants rejected) where a bachelors degree costs $350K, deem it "The People's University", you understand why so any of them go to work at The People's Hedge Fund and The People's Consulting Firm.

All we want is the truth. We'll figure out what to do with it.
White celebrities, in the moments before they cancelled their private security service (ADT, etc), moved out of their doorman buildings and Malibu safe houses, put their children in the local public school and joined the revolution. Inspiring!
This man was admitted to and graduated from an Ivy League university.
Somewhere in America there’s the person who got denied so that this guy could go instead.
This is legacy admissions.
I just received what was I guess a kind note from a reader saying he was very sorry that I hadn’t “won the genetic lottery.”
And thank you, but Jesus Christ I didn’t lose all of them!
I did not know who else had signed that letter. I thought I was endorsing a well meaning, if vague, message against internet shaming. I did know Chomsky, Steinem, and Atwood were in, and I thought, good company.
The consequences are mine to bear. I am so sorry.

@AndrewYang
seems to be the only Democratic candidate who thinks that there is something in human life that is more valuable than the workplace. He is the true inheritor of the 1960's desire to find a deeper meaning in life than being a cog in the machine.
Here’s that Professor of Economics who was arrested at Emory university and everyone seems to think is some poor victim of police repression. Caroline Fohlin ADMITS she hit a police officer on the head. Even professors are not allowed to assault cops. Yes, even professors.
Father of Ahmaud Arbery just now: “ALL lives matter. I don’t want no daddy to watch his kid get shot down like that. It’s ALL our problem. So let’s keep fighting to make this a better place for all human beings. Love everybody! All human beings need to be treated equally.” ❤️👏🏼👑

There is nothing hateful.
Eventually, she will be proven right, and the high cost she's paid for sticking to her beliefs will be seen as the choice of a principled person.
The right wants to ban Beloved
The left wants to ban Huck Finn
How about we stop banning books, let young people read them and conduct seminar-style discussions where students make their own assessments of merit?
The New York Times’ new word for woman and adolescent girls is “menstruater” and I just tried to play “Cinnamon Girl” on Spotify and was referred to “various artists.”

This is a very strange thing to write on Twitter, but so many of you have kindly asked me about it. I had my PET/CT last week: cancer is stable, and that's great news. Now my task is to start getting stronger.
Thank you again for all the kind messages.

Nah, it’s a bunch of cornballs who are in an online program simply bc they want to say they have a “Harvard” (or Columbia) degree. That’s fine to laugh at.
The moment when Crenshaw acknowledged Pete Davidson's father, who died in 9/11, and the very brief moment in which Davidson was almost overcome by emotion because of it, was powerful. As was Davidson's obvious relief at being treated with such grace by the older man.
Unlike Bennet,
@bariweiss
didn’t apologize for what she believes, didn’t cower, didn’t cry.
Every young woman should look to her example for grace and strength under extreme pressure.
It’s not really about masking/non-masking/CRT curriculum/non-CRT curriculum.
It’s about the fact that American K-12 education is the biggest failed public works project of my lifetime.
You should not have to live in a wealthy district to get a good education.

This is a huge story that the

Of course it did.
Because it was the truth.

Watch how

stays calm in the face of Sunny Hostin's ad hominem assertions. How does he manage that? Because he knows more about the subject than she does, and he gracefully waits for her to finish so that he can explain what she's missing.
I was born in 1961, and it was drilled into me a thousand different ways that if I ever saw the ancient evil rising, I had a responsibility to stand against it.
I never, ever imagined that it would come here, to the United States of America in my lifetime.
Mother of God.
And yet to a person, the migrants so cynically sent there, report much, much better treatment than they would otherwise have had.
What he's angry about is the decency and kindness with which they were met. Ruined the stunt.
Cruz: Tomorrow, Martha's vineyard needs a 100. The next day they need 200. The next day they need a thousand. DC says it's a crisis to get 6k? They need 10k, they need a 100k, they need 500k..
This will sound trite - but as I look back on my life, the sheer gratitude I have for an education, and for educated people around me, and for books and smart people to talk about them with -
I mean, what if I'd been abandoned to whatever processes produced this idiot?
I've been in and around education my whole life - I've always believed anything that improves access is a godsend.
Why do the "real" Harvard students laugh at these others?
I guarantee you, a lot of nontraditional students are rightly proud of those degrees.
I hate snobs.
@kalihollowayftw
Hi, Harvard real-degree here. You're spot on. The "extension school" is a source of laughter and annoyance for students and alumni. (I think Columbia has one, too -- same thing there.) It's basically an "anyone can enroll, so long as you pay", no more stringent than a community…
The backstory on how the Times was finally forced to run this story is long, but suffice it to say - it validates everything
@AbigailShrier
said when she broke the story months ago.
This fellow came out screaming, had a freak surgical emergency at 6 weeks old, got “lost” at a department store at age 9 when he’d secretly brought his $10 to buy a Mother’s Day gift, works at a soup kitchen, and is one of the reasons I’ve never once refused chemo.
Tell it to the fireman who walks into your burning house to rescue you.
Or the young men who signed up for heavy combat after 9/11.
Tell it to the man who reaches for the baseball bat when there’s a noise downstairs and his family is sleeping.

The nation is contemplating UBI for this crisis.
@AndrewYang
would therefore make a superb running mate for the Democratic candidate. No one in the world knows more about UBI.
But because of identity politics,
@JoeBiden
has promised to pick a woman.

Writers: As with many previously trusted resources, the AP Style Book is now to be avoided.
Carry on using the most exact words you can find, and avoid this type of jargon.
The goal of language is to communicate. The more precise the language, the better the communication.
We now say not to use the archaic and sexist term "mistress" for a woman in a long-term sexual relationship with, and financially supported by, a man who is married to someone else.
Instead, use an alternative like companion or lover on first reference. Provide details later.

"Tomorrow, Israel could kill everyone in Gaza if they wanted that. They obviously haven’t wanted that. They obviously don’t want to do that now. If you reverse that balance of power and ask what would Hamas do, what would jihadist organizations anywhere do? They would kill all…
Sam Harris is right on here.
He explains the insistent assumption of so many westerners that the depravity we saw from Hamas in murdering Israeli civilians in the most brutal and horrific ways must’ve been motivated by some terrible behavior by Israel. Like the terrorists…
You’ve spent the last 4 years telling me to set my hair on fire and run screaming through the streets, and now when the shit is finally coming down you want me to take some time for myself?
To exclude Ta-Nehisi Coates from any high school course on African American studies is to deny American teenagers a rich part of their own heritage.

Jesus Christ, America. Save yourself.
Another academic handwringing about the "crises in the humanities."
The crisis is that you guys stopped teaching things of great worth. And every time you got hold of something worthwhile, you forced through the critical theory meat grinder. Nobody cares.

Hilary bringing it to the nincompoops of the View so hard that the only comeback is a wan little "those were the days" tribute to Anwar Sadat (late of this world, 1981) has brought me back into the fold.

My son came over to watch horror movies and have dinner with us. I can remember zipping him into a dinosaur costume another lifetime ago.
All I ever wanted in life was to get married and have children.
I don't know what to say about that.
Take it a step further. What if we asked for a lifetime commitment, a binding legal document and the presence of witnesses at the vow taking? Could work.
How do people this unbelievably dumb get prominent media jobs?
CA – which has a lower crime rate than many states, a better economy than most, and fewer COVID deaths than two-thirds – has in her mind “collapsed.” If that is so, then more than half of America has collapsed.

I have discovered that a young man of my acquaintance - college educated, raised by good parents - did not know that there are 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.
What the Hell are they teaching in these schools?
What an astonishing piece. It explains so much. One of those situations where a person hides something out of shame - for just about his whole life. It’s so much better to be known completely.
Let’s see, we’ve got one

guy being sued for sexual harassment, one suspended for running cover for his sexually harassing brother, and one in good standing despite jacking off during a zoom meeting …
And

is the one they fired?
The reason the Democratic Party is on the back foot is that it has married progressive economic policies - which are good, perhaps essential for the working man and woman - to a set of social policies and attitudes that have been beamed down from outer space.
