“You have a right to buy as many cars as you’d like, but with that comes the responsibility and burden of finding parking…NYC is doing people who drive a favor by allowing them to park on the street for free.”👊
@BKBPReynoso
during a community forum organized by
@ReneeCollymore
Since I was the victim of a bike crash where the person who rammed into me left without leaving his name or contact information, I feel it’s even more relevant when I say this: the real problem is cars.
I was the victim of a hit and run in Prospect Park. This cyclist, Kevin, crashed hard into me from behind on the hill in Prospect Park. I asked for his info multiple times. His friends he was racing with told him to leave and then he did while I was trying to file a police report
On Vanderbilt while on my way to the Atlantic Ave redesign workshop last night, I yelled at the person who would have doored me in the bike lane if I hadn’t been hyper vigilant. She walked to confront me at the light to tell ME to be more careful to avoid getting doored. Cool.
New York City’s streets and sidewalks make up our largest public space. But more than 75 percent of that space is devoted to driving and free storage for cars — even though a minority of New Yorkers own a car. Containerize trash in the street.
#nyc25x25
I asked him not to block the bike lane and he goes, I work for
@CitiBikeNYC
.
I’m like, yeah, that makes it even worse. He goes, want my job to take 50% longer? Not sure why that would be the case, but sure, yeah. Don’t block the bike lane and force riders into traffic.
Atlanta, where I grew up, doesn’t have it all, but it does have a subway that goes straight to the airport like most major cities in the world. Goes right into the main terminal.
Unbelievable that you can’t hop on a train and get to the airport with your subway fare in NYC.
Hear this Trump supporter threatening physical violence. He’s been here for 50 minutes.
@nypd
said they are aware of the threats and “that is why we’re here.” Threats at polling sites at ok, as long as it’s 100 feet away from polling site entrance?
@BOENYC
@bradlander
What do you do when elected officials are hearing from their constituents, particularly drivers, who don’t want to see these safety improvements put in place?
The last I checked, the mayor didn’t go block by block to ask if people wanted a fire station. We prioritize safety.
Ride in the bike lane, they say.
Check out this new
@Casey

@LincolnRestler
’s proposal (!!!) to let citizens report cars dangerously blocking sidewalks, intersections and bike lanes!
NYC Bike Lane Bounty:
Today is my 1 year workaversary as
@TransAlt

Kicking off year 2 of grassroots organizing for safe streets by centering the most vulnerable on the street, including families, building partnerships and bringing joy to the work.
So narrow and so dangerous! Does anyone have a chainsaw? I could ride in the bucket of my cargo bike and trim everything back with the chainsaw while someone rides my bike up and down the greenway. 🪚 let’s go
“We need more protected bike lanes, we need them everywhere and we need them faster…I’ll do everything I can.”
TY

for speaking powerfully at tonight’s vigil for your constituent Adam Uster + all pedestrians and cyclists in your district.
@TransAlt
@TransAltBK
Thanks to one of our activists for the tip.
Get this…this crew has the best team name ever for an “Elite NYC Bike Racing Team” that agrees as a team to hit and run another cyclist: Good Guys Racing!
I’ve been trying to dock for 50 MINUTES in Lower Manhattan after giving a bike tour. Frustrating after a great ride with
@CitiBikeNYC
. The dock that shows one spot open is actually broken. Dozens of us are going around to docks when one spot appears on the map.
For anyone who hasn’t learned about what to do after a crash, you should file a report. Esp when you’re in shock, you don’t know what injuries you might have and not all injuries are visible or appear right away. Unfortunately, atm there’s no way to file a report w/o calling PD.
Dude is a complete dick and so are his friends.
When the guy in the right was like, it was an accident, I was, like, yeah no, biking with your eyes closed is not an accident.
Who crashes into someone like that on hill. Kevin doesn’t know how to ride a bike and hits and runs.
@goaliegirl44
You say “you” when I haven’t said anything beyond pointing to this particular reckless cyclist and his friends, and only because he/they left me in the park after the one crashed violently into me.
Even more than the usual rage today seeing this driver absolutely chilling in his vehicle in front of
@table87
while blocking the entire crosswalk after I visited the site of the fatal 9th St crash 2 blocks away from here this morning. Looked up the plate to validate what I knew.
That
@nytimes
piece showed a 130-unit building needs 3 on-street trash containers, which take up the space of 1.5 parked cars. Based on avg. occupancy, 319 people would be served by 3 containers, before even quantifying the public health benefits...vs. 1.5 car owners.
Hat tip to
@NYCSanitation
for doing exactly what it said it would do with trash containerization ... in the curbside lane. Agency is moving forward quickly on a true revolution in public space:
CONFIRMED. The next round of jersey barriers for bike lanes includes Grand Street (!!!) thanks to the advocacy of our North Brooklyn TA Activist Committee
@NBk_TA
and others. What do you want to make sure
@NYC_DOT
does on Grand St?
Ridic. Look at this. Why does New York City allow this?
@illegal53NYC
No vehicle this size should ever be on NYC streets. The scale of this is seriously so beyond.
9th St/4th Ave clogging up the entire intersection and endangering everyone around the big ass truck.
I was carrying heavy bags and hoped the bus would stop at the tiny notch ppl made. Mixed messages from a city that urges us to use public transportation on days like this. Sidewalk, crosswalk corner and bus stop clearing should be prioritized by NYC. It’s as impt as streets.
Eric Adams: No More Deaths! Massive ride and rally marking 26 preventable and record cyclist deaths so far this year in Eric Adams’ watch. His administration has watered down projects in Brooklyn and across NYC.
@NYCMayor
Do the rats run on Dunkin' ???
Sure looks like it in Belle Harbor.
Food businesses must containerize ALL their trash, NOT half of it!
This
@dunkindonuts
has received FIVE warnings so far in August. Guess where we're going first when fines start 9/1?
There are so many people biking on Bergen, a critical east/west connection. I didn’t capture a pic of it but at points it felt like a group ride. We need a protected bike lane on Bergen/Dean, which would go a long way towards creating a protected network in Brooklyn.

“There are private entities on our streets every single day and that’s by cars. Public streets are occupied every single day by private vehicles. I think the use of these streets for kids and daycares is a much more valuable use of the std than for private parking.”
@BKBPReynoso
We are piloting vertical elements on the center line at select entry points on the two-way protected

lane on Schermerhorn St in Brooklyn. NYC DOT will monitor and evaluate this installation.
Many NYC food establishments claim their bathrooms are permanently broken. Don’t certain places have to have functioning bathrooms by law to be open? Of course not talking about a day or two, but chronically closed bathrooms.
NYC desperately needs more public bathrooms, too.
According to
@NYC_DOT
, 4th Ave doesn’t have room for a temp PBL during construction bc it would “create congestion,” but it does have room for 4th Ave illegal parking to take up the same space…and somehow that doesn’t create congestion. 🤔

Enough is enough.
Join us on October 11 and demand ACTION from Mayor Adams and our city's leaders to protect bike riders.
We are on track to have the second-deadliest year for bike riders in *recorded history*.
It doesn't have to be this way.
RSVP:
That’s her door. Saw the moment she flung it open w/o looking, so I wasn’t hit, but it’s wild how casual drivers are about throwing their doors open into the street in NYC.
I find there as many hazards while walking tho.
I still ❤️ NYC should be the disclaimer on my posts.
@BrentToderian
I was there in 2007...didn't grasp the full context of what had taken place to create the beautiful park in the middle of the city. Amazing highway removal case study!
#BQE
Lots of us (including
@marcelemoran
and
@2AvSagas
) have noticed the new scourge of plateless cars on city streets. How is the Adams administration doing on this problem? Not so great, as
@Jesse_Coburn
and
@GershKuntzman
report:
The absolute scariest part of leading our bike to school ride last week was navigating blocked/unprotected 4th Ave.
@NYC_DOT
won’t provide the legally required temp bike lane bc of fake congestion. Look at the lanes blocked by cars like here (+no congestion). It’s BS.
#fix4thave
First Trader Joe’s run with the new cargo bike and one of my babies. 🛒
Used two locks and took the battery out. How much do you have to stress when the bike’s only out there for a little while?
Reminder that it’s cars, not Open Streets or bike lanes, that delay emergency vehicles.

Well, I wasn’t polite when she almost doored me either, but yeah, I’m going to yell at people who almost door me or door me.
I don’t like getting yelled at either, but I can’t imagine telling someone to f off when I know I did something wrong.
Yes, one wealthy family (with money to burn texting people who live in Texas) is trying to kill a promised NYC DOT street redesign that will save lives.
@StefManisero
@NY1
I urge you to do the cars on sidewalks story first. It’s a much larger issue that endangers many more New Yorkers daily, if your story leads are centered around facts.

Thanks. Right, I haven’t said anything about groups of cyclists, but I will say all ppl who hit and run suck. I’ve said Kevin and his friends suck and the only reason I posted on here is because he left while I said we needed to file a report, and he didn’t share his info.

Remember Celi. She was our neighbor and a nanny who died on 12/31 after being seriously injured by a reckless driver at Union St/5th Ave in Park Slope on 12/20. Celi died while saving life of the 1yo baby who was in her care.❤️
#celimuschamp
should be alive. It wasn’t an accident.
Advocates have been asking and I learned today that

trucks in NYC? Look at this truck the size of a building going through small side streets. Unbelievable that we just let this slide.
Launching soon,
#BikeSlope
is a free 1-hour bike tour of Park Slope for smaller groups on protected bike lanes only. My husband and I think monthly rides will be a fun event for those who want to get comfortable riding in the street.
@CitiBikeNYC
is offering free bikes for it!
According to DOT, double parking has decreased by up to 70% across its 111 Neighborhood Loading Zone (NLZ) pilot areas.Despite support and proven benefits, there are only 24 requests here citywide since Sept. Tell DOT where a NLZ would help your community:

suddenly closing the door as advocates line up with the names of 14 people who have died as a result of traffic violence on McGuinness Boulevard.
@mcguinness_safe
Reckless parking is reckless driving and HMJ 5073 represents that perfectly. Astounding record of reckless driving, and still welcomed by the City to drive like maniacs and park wherever they’d like on our streets, putting everyone at risk.
About an hour after I sent out our media advisory, the DA’s bureau chief called

to say they were declining to prosecute Adam based on insufficient evidence. Nice try. We have a lot more to say about the unjust arrest tomorrow at the press conference. See you at 1 pm.
5th Ave is about to break records 🎆
This year’s holiday Open Street will be NYC’s largest-ever!
WHEN: The first 3 Sundays in December
WHERE: 5th Ave between 48th St & 59th St
More info:
Obviously I’m calling on
@CitiBikeNYC
to have a policy where they don’t, for any reason, endanger cyclists and block bike lanes, crosswalks, etc. This individual is just taking orders and doing what Citi Bike wants him to do as we heard from his response.
Drives me crazy. The City puts drivers and peds/cyclists at direct conflict at every site where a sidewalk is treated by a driver as a driveway. Landmines. In 2019
@NYC_DOT
promoted a “Driveway Safety Program.” (Wrong name bc sidewalk) What happened to that? Never saw a thing.
Is this new where google maps tells you the type of bike lane for each street on the route when you choose cycling as your preferred means or did I accidentally add that helpful feature?
11 year old cycling advocate Kaede who bikes to middle school by herself stole the

Streets that are safe enough for families are safe enough for all of us.

In 2018, a much-needed 9th Street redesign prompted by tragedy was revealed, but stopped at 3rd Ave. The improvements were beneficial but also bare minimum and limited geographically. It’s time to do it right and prioritize the larger network. Forget waiting for another tragedy.
My husband couldn’t pass this 4th Ave River to drop off at school half a block from here. Completely soaked, they walked back home and I took my daughter to school at 11. She said 13 of 21 classmates were out today because of the flooding. Not clear why school wasn’t canceled.
Shocked and disappointed

Living in BK, 99% of my errands are done on foot or w/my wagon or bike. When I need a car, I rent a car…but I am not burdened with car ownership and I am not adding a car to the street. You’d think car-obsessed people would support bike and ped infra. bc fewer cars helps drivers
Update: the NYPD agent assigned to the polling site had said a school custodian had told her the car was 100 ‘ away. In the middle of this happening, I didn’t question that. When I walked the distance, the electioneer was 26 ft from the school get and 40 ft from the school door.
