About me:
I am a grad student & a former conservative Republican. In the last 3 years, I have deconstructed my beliefs on evangelical Christianity, politics, & dating (Hey, I’m single.)
So those are the things that I tweet about most often.
🧵To those frustrated over friends & family who still are Pro-Trump, etc.
I voted for DJT twice, though I was never MAGA. I was convinced 1/6 wasn’t a big deal, but I had a friend gently & consistently disagree. It was because of him that I eventually came to see the truth. +
There are tons of loud voices out there in the political realm.
Be different. Be straightforward, calm, & not pushy. Don’t go on & on. Just show confidence in what you’re saying.
I’m just talking of what convinced me, & completely changed my political view.
@SarahPa69612621
The majority of the people I know are still where I was 3 years ago. I get discouraged too, but I am going to keep trying and praying.
@SeraphenaM
Your perception of events is shaped by the lens you see the world through.
The lens you see the world through is shaped by who you listen to, your friends, family, & culture over time, sometimes decades.
@sewistwrites
I agree. I’ve felt very little anger toward the woman my ex-h cheated with. He’s the one who made vows to me, not her.
Do I respect the fact she cheated with a married man? No. But 95% of my anger was directed toward him.
@_nomadic_soul
My classmate almost hemorrhaged to death having her last child.
Childbirth is very dangerous, & yes, it sucks. That doesn’t mean we value our children less. It just means we’re honest about the experience of it.
@PastorBenMarsh
@DavidGBurbach
I’m a Gen Xer who honestly can’t choose. I despise them all.
One sure way to get me to vote for the other person is to be associated with Trump in any way.
@SarahLongwell25
I’m a new never-Trumper. But I’m not a Democrat.
However, I’m solidly independent & can’t imagine ever going back to the GOP, & I’ve been a GOP voter for over 30 years.
@gcnewsman
I admit I have lots of friends from all over the political spectrum. So it wasn’t too hard actually.
But what struck me about all of it was the fact that he really didn’t try to change my opinion. He simply disagreed, and let it go, which made me contemplate it more.
@WacoYid
@HeathMayo
My friend listened to me and quietly disagreed, telling me his POV/facts, and let it go. The simplicity of it was what caught my attention.
@Theholisticpsyc
I normally agree with everything you say, but I know someone who has a child who has been oppositionally defiant since she could walk & has very nurturing parents.
It is truly a part of her personality.
@laurenancona
I’m an elder caregiver. I was talking to a client’s husband yesterday, telling him that I was diagnosed in middle age with ADHD & am still learning about it.
He told me that he thinks he’s autistic (81 years old) and why, but he was never diagnosed.
@sheilagregoire
The way these patriarchal males in our churches view women is just gross.
It breaks my heart and enrages me that these men who should be outraged at statutory rape and helping the victim protect the perpetrator.
@heatherfink
I wish I could say yes, but I can’t. It was his demeanor & the fact that he didn’t keep trying to convince me that stuck out at the time.
Also, Trump’s posts on Truth social seemed more and more off putting to me, & the dominoes started falling from there.
@Bec_Shrader
I just left my church because I’m horrified by the way women are marginalized, and people are so blind to it.
I’m thankful for Twitter, for opening my eyes.
@_nomadic_soul
I can’t even describe how ridiculous it all is.
My question is why in the world would anyone looking in want to subject themselves to such legalism?
@SouthernKeeks
I didn’t understand who Trump was when I voted for him. I saw people like you &
@JenniferEValent
who were never Trumpers, but I didn’t get it.
Because of respected people like you & Jennifer I was finally able to completely understand how horrible he truly is. Thank you. +
@ZachWLambert
@JoashPThomas
I just…don’t get how people read the life of Jesus, see His example, and then think that treating another human being in that manner is what He would have us do.
I’m so sorry Zach!
@JessupShannon
As someone who had a much-needed breast reduction to improve my quality of life/reduce back stress…
The people criticizing these woman have NO IDEA how life-impeding, painful, & debilitating very large breasts can be. They are speaking of something they know NOTHING about.
@janefortruth
Kristie,
Because of people like you, slowly, slowly, slowly, people like me are waking up. One by one, person by person.
God is using your voice. Please don’t let the naysayers discourage you. I am so grateful & thankful for the courage of trauma victims speaking out.
@bethallisonbarr
God, I give thanks to you for Beth, who so courageously fights against misogyny in Your church. I ask that you send Your Spirit to comfort her and give her peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
@_nomadic_soul
She doesn’t hate men. She hates the way SOME misogynist men treat women, plain and simple.
And she calls out that behavior. It’s pretty simple to understand, really.
God,
My prayer today is that you would impart Your divine wisdom in my relationships. Please guide me Lord.
Show me how to love people like you do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
@BamaStephen
@RaisedtoWalk
You can know all the theology in the world, but if you aren’t showing the fruits of the Spirit…🤷🏻♀️
That’s how I follow (and unfollow/mute) Christian accounts. By their fruit.
I just heard a client, very old, say a prayer and thank God for me. The pay isn’t great for what I do, but the joy of helping others never fades.
#iloveeldercare
@jblairsanders
It took me longer than you…same here except it took me until 2021 to start seeing the light.
Thank you for posting this. It is *so* encouraging to read about others who are on the same journey.
I never, ever want to become that politically blind and entrenched again.
@MrsEmilyFinch
As someone whose ancestors weren’t forced into chattel slavery & then once freed, oppressed for over a century, I have hesitated to say much today.
But that particular tweet literally sickens me. I’m putting G3 on block. MLK deserves to be honored. Period.
@sheilagregoire
@FocusFamily
Wow. The harm done by evangelicals refusing to learn about & have a healthy attitude toward sex is immense. It harmed me growing up in that culture.
Seeing things like this makes me so sad for the adolescents whose parents follow the advice of organizations like FOTF.
@_nomadic_soul
I don’t know whether I’m complementarían any more or have evolved into an egalitarian, but what I do know is that complementarianism as it is practiced in American evangelical churches is harmful & doesn’t represent Christ.
@jsparkblog
I love following you. I don’t get all the hate you receive.
You give of yourself daily to those who are in pain & grieving. You have a beautiful family. I’m so sorry for the vitriol, but please know your presence here is appreciated. ❤️
@JenniferEValent
Evangelical Christian culture has been so inculcated with conservative politics for so long that people aren’t even aware how corrupted the culture is. And most of them are surrounded by other evangelicals who see everything the same way. They can’t see the forest for the trees.
@jblairsanders
@HwaBom3
Exactly. I never thought I’d be here…but I’m also glad I’m not on the path that I was on before. I used to vote straight GOP…never again.
I love my country, but don’t want to put it on a pedestal. I care about the marginalized, the mistreated. I don’t see that in today’s GOP.
@jjmather
@GeriLake2
I’ve never regretted voting for anyone.. I thought DJT was the lesser of 2 evils both times I voted for him & that the never Trumpers were being overdramatic.
I was wrong. He’s actually worse than what I even thought they were saying. I’m ashamed & abjectly regret those 2 votes.
@daneortlund
I struggle with depression. Right now it’s especially bad.
Maybe my depression isn’t a good witness. But it’s reality. And I think being real is a much better witness than fake happiness.
@tweetraychang
I came across the most incredible article tonight while doing research about a policy that affects cognitively impaired people.
It is amazing how much where you live, your race, & other factors affect your probability of getting Alzheimer’s. +
@TheValuesVoter
@steamtug7
@highbrow_nobrow
@patriottakes
This is sooo insulting & ridiculous. I’m decades out of college, yes. But I didn’t comprehend Trump’s true dearth of character until a couple of years ago, so I voted for him twice. 😢
The GOP supports him, therefore I’m no longer GOP. I don’t think I’ll ever return.
@JillMarieRichar
I visited a church where the music was so loud that the base was literally reverberating in my chest.
I left before the end of the service when the band came up on stage and when I told the people why I wouldn’t be back, they handed me earplugs.
I’m with you.
@JenniferEValent
@BamaStephen
I think it’s because of blindness caused by political idolatry. How many folks have spent countless hours watching Fox/listening to talk radio? I did years ago.
Our politics informs our biblical learning, instead of the other way around.
@Andy35o
There’s underlying tone here that is uncaring IMO.
I tried to tell my son that it was important not to spoil others’ fun.
My POV is this: If something was important to me as a parent, would I want someone else to spoil it? No. So I taught him not to say anything if possible.
@kevinmyoung
This tweet makes me angry. It’s a blanket statement that is ridiculous.
There are tons of awesome, sincere people who go to church. If someone asks me to go for coffee, I’m going.
@sheilagregoire
I am completely blown away by the continual devastating revelations about this man and his ministry, & his influence pervades so much of evangelicalism.
@byronology
- please listen
@steamtug7
Excellent thread.
1. The theobros constant misogyny & lack of spiritual fruits was & is so bad it actually helped open my eyes to how pervasive misogyny is in the evangelical church as a whole. +
@BethMooreLPM
Beth,
Your grace & humility in the face of being under fire all the time is remarkable, & I know it’s because you’ve faithfully pursued a close relationship with Jesus daily. It’s easy to see.
Thank you for being a light here, & someone who practices what Jesus asked of us. +
@pastordmack
Ms. Coulter is a grifter who tries to use shocking statements to get attention.
The thought of her upsetting you with her usual modus operandi grieves me.
@kevinmyoung
I am aware of the widespread problem of church abuse, & I’m angry about that too.
But to say it’s suspect when anyone from your church invites you out for coffee is just wrong. There are a lot of legitimately nice, lonely people out there who just want to make friends. 1/2
@_nomadic_soul
@EgleArdath
Sometimes I just can’t believe that I believed all of that stuff for 1/2 a century.
Not the scripture, but the cultural lens that I saw the scripture through is ludicrous. And I allowed a guy to disrespect me for 20 years because of that lens. It’s*so*stinkin*harmful.
In 1963, 24 years after the Wizard of Oz premiered, Ray Bolger came on the Judy Garland show and they performed,
If I only Had A Brain.
Judy's eyes the entire time...
@JenniferEValent
I remember in the 90s not understanding how Democrats could support Clinton. The hypocrisy of how we all talked about his character & the constant defense of Trump is pretty mind-blowing.
@SouthernKeeks
I like Taylor Swift.
Here’s why.
She gives so much joy to girls who are going through adolescence.
She works really hard. I think her Eras Tour had a 44 song performance list.
Her songs may be angsty, but I don’t worry about young kids hearing them, unlike a lot of other….+

To each her own. I love the 05 version myself. I can watch P&P in 2 hours. And I love the soundtrack too.
I can understand why so many swear by the 95 version, because it’s true to the book.
@jsparkblog
Mr Park…
You spend your entire day serving others who are at some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
You come here & post honestly about your experiences & talk about how you feel sometimes.
You are pretty much the last person I’d think of as narcissistic.
The holidays are so hard.
When you’re a little girl, you never imagine your adult life as largely solitary, away from family, with your child celebrating 1/2 of them away from you.
I always think it’s getting better, but then it hits again as the holidays draw near.
@scott_m_coley
I went through a mild deconstruction recently. I become aware that I was seeing everything, including my faith, through the cultural lens of western Evangelicalism.
I changed the type of church I went to after 30+ years of attending.+
@MamaLouies
@SeraphenaM
I guess, I did watch in the past, though I haven’t watched in a long time. I get my news from the internet. Television news is too slanted.
@PastorBenMarsh
^^^I *just* came across that fact in one of my grad school courses.
Also, the current cost of housing makes this safety net all the more important.
@joyklaprade
An ex-boyfriend who I really respected told me about the premise of Jesus and John Wayne. I told him that I disagreed with the premise.
The next thing I knew, I was seeing the misogyny that he was saying was rampant in evangelicalism everywhere on here. +

1. Rich Mullins
2. Chris Tomlin
3. Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart
4. Petra
5. Journey
But I would really miss Amy Grant, Billy Joel, & The Bee Gees.
@thomaslhorrocks
How is this loving your neighbor?
One of the most ironic things about Twitter is that I see all of these people who’ve studied theology extensively, yet fail to follow Christ’s most simple commands.
@jacobhuneycutt_
Jacob, it is so refreshing & rare to see a Christian male who disagrees with egalitarianism not only respond respectfully, but defend an egalitarian sister in Christ against those who launch ugly attacks against her. Thank you.

@conjornyn
@Brcremer
I’m going to go home at the end of March. I’m trying to frame how I’m going to talk about my change in beliefs with close family/friends. I’ve already saved this thread.
I’m not expecting them to understand. 😢
@edwards21228
It’s actually sad that Ben (and all other Christian Nationalists) have such a poor understanding of Jesus, and therefore, Christianity.
