There are psychological costs to changing one's last name that families rarely discuss. Some brides feel like they would lose a piece of their identity—which is why it can be such a difficult decision.

In Australia you get a sausage when you vote. But in Bavaria you can have an election krapfen (donut). Though you’ll have to buy it yourself. Yes, @40PercentGerman, I will report back on the Wahlkrapfen when it’s released! And, obviously I’ll be going for a full house of these

Know Your Authority 🇩🇪 Edition
Latest in an occasional series on raising children in Germany: my son showed his maths teacher a police ID card he’d made. Oh wow, she replied, I’d better make sure I haven’t parked my car illegally. Then another boy (6) butts in: No, actually that’s a case for the Ordnungsamt.

Anyone for the Cobra Effecr 2024 edition? @rorysutherland @CravenPartners
In August the Home Office introduced a Zombie Knife amnesty. They agreed to pay £10 per knife. They expected that 472 Zombie Knives would be surrendered. Instead, one wholesaler alone has surrendered 35,000 blades. 🧵thread on incentives and what went wrong with the scheme.

Not for the first time @seatsixtyone delivers a valuable Compliance lesson. When rules involve cutoffs you get ‘interesting’ outcomes at the margins…
What I really really like about this 11:01 to Brussels & Amsterdam is that crucial extra minute. On Eurostars leaving before 11:00 you get breakfast. After 11:00, lunch and *wine*… 👍

My kind of train station. Yes those are vines in the background and since there are delays, I feel like supporting the local economy is a better use of my time than standing on the chilly platform. I know @Gerald_Ashley & @marcaross would approve…

This week's pod is 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗺. By design. It's @ballantine70 telling me why random is so powerful. He makes a really compelling case. Try random. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 🎧 👉 https://t.co/QuZ58UDCfJ

This is unbelievably joyous! I’d love to think the ‘game’ brought the best out of them. A reminder of the importance of growing old disgracefully!

I’m reminded of the (apocryphal?) butcher who deliberately used greengrocer’s apostrophes on their price boards, so people would come in to point the error out and then end up buying something.
I am a mildly successful youtuber. My videos are mini documentaries and I frequently put deliberate small mistakes in them for my subscribers to point out to me in the comments section. Their comments help the algorithm to promote the video. No mistakes, fewer comments.

It's the satirists I feel sorry for. We don't want to encourage more cyclists, say the police, because that'll mean more bikes, which might encourage bike thieves. 🤦🏻♂️
from Oxford police objecting to better bike parking as it’ll encourage more bikes which might mean more bike theft https://t.co/OmN2YlP9EO
